Title: WOODY ITSON TRICKSTAR Finally Finished - Pic Heavy - NEW PICS
Post by: AKGOFF on June 02, 2011, 09:56 PM
I have been collecting now for about 2 & 1/2 years and i have a few nice bikes. I like high end and rare stuff that you don't see every day and i have a few nice bikes in my collection, only one of which was bought complete (STR - 1)
I first saw a picture of this bike about 4 months into collecting and i knew that was my dream bike and one day i would have it no matter what. About a month later I bought the Frame & Forks with Hutch Ladder Bars and a Tioga layback post from Ebay already done in pink so i thought great, this is it, i'm halfway there already! I didn't realise at the time how hard the rest of the parts would be to source to get it absolutely spot on not to mention the obvious cost involved. A few weeks later i got lucky and found a set of NOS Pink Woody Zs from Earlstuff and then i contacted William Fong (80skid.com) and bought the NOS Bars. I contacted Juan Mattos (BMXAddicts) who sold me the Aerospeed Crankset and the tyres were relatively easy to find as were the Pro Rotor, Stem and Brakes so i got it all together and built it knowing full well that i would never be able to find, let alone afford the SST Rear Coaster Hub, AME Unitrons and front Hutch Hub. I showed it at MK10 and was well pleased that it was finished, seriously chuffed to bits. Whilst looking around the rest of the amazing show bikes there i got talking to Bubbs and he commented on my Trickstar and i said it was almost an exact replica but i couldn't find the grips or rear hub, to my astonishment, he said 'I think i've got a set of NOS pink & white AME Unitrons at home'. that was it, i was back on Woody Itson mode and i was determined to rebuild it to an EXACT spec this time. It has taken me almost a year now to source all of the correct parts and i have just picked it up tonight. To say i am pleased is the understatement of the decade, i feel 12 again. A big thankyou has to go out to the following people who helped me out BIG TIME on this project particularly Norm Kiproff who took tracings of his Woody Decal and then scanned and emailed them to me so i could forward them on to Del who reproduced them to such a high standard that Norm said unless they were side by side you would never tell which one was original. Norm also hooked me up to the fact that the brake levers were ACS not DC as i thought, he even found some for me. Vince as usual did his magic with the restoration of the front Hutch Hub and polishing everything up to a sparkle right down to repainting in the MX Logos on the Levers & Calipers :daumenhoch:
Parts list as follows:
1985 US Hutch Trickstar Frameset RESPRAYED in Hutch Pink - Freestyle Icon
NOS Woody Itson Hutch Bars - William Fong - 80skid.com
NOS Hutch Western H Freestyle Stem
NOS AME Unitron Grips - Bubbs
ACS 'Tech 3' Locking Levers - Sourced by Norm Kiproff
NOS 1985 Stamped DC Cables
NOS Hutch Plate - Carlos Ruiz
NOS Hutch Layback Post
NOS Kashimax Aero
NOS Hutch Clamp - Earlstuff
NOS ACS Pro Rotor
Hutch Aerospeed Crankset 180mm - Juan Mattos
NOS Hutch Aerospeed Power Disc
NOS Sugino 44t Chainring
NOS Izumi Nickel Chain
NOS Hutch Pro Pedals - Juan Mattos
NOS ACS Pink Woody Itson Z Rims - Earlstuff
NOS Hutch Freestyle Tyres
Polished DC MX1000 Calipers without Quick Realease
Restored Woody Itson Freestyler rear SST Coaster Hub with all original harware - Juan Mattos
Restored Front Hutch Hub - Juan Mattos
Woody Decal - Traced, scanned and emailed by Norm Kiproff and then all decals supplied by the one and only Del - you are a genius pal
Most imprtantly of all though is the 100% NOS Energy that this bike expels

This is my latest build - I hope you love it as much as i do :smitten: - Adam

Hey Adam, congrats.  I know that wasn't an easy build to complete and it looks awesome if I do say so myself.   FYI, I believe those ACS levers went from me, to Norm, to you.  Sure wish I had my original.  Woody.

Boys, thanks for all your positive comments they really do make this hobby well worthwhile and it looks like the man himself has joined this site just to leave a comment aswell, I am truly stoked, thanks Woody and like I said above, if it wasn't for guys like Juan letting go of that SST hub (which I know was hard) this build would not have been possible.
Thanks again chaps

And another much needed shout-out to Vince (mincer) for his resto skills and wheel building (no easy task when you're trying to lace the relatively unknown SST hub that takes different length  spokes on the inboard and outboard )

It totally depends on the weather Robbo, I love riding all my bikes but with this one its not just a nice looking bike like my others, there is obviously a BIG cost involved in this so i don't want it getting all shitty in the rain, if the weather is definately gonna be good then it will make a debut, if thers a chance of rain then it will have to wait for MK .
Heres hoping for a scorcher :daumenhoch:

An amazing build with great attention to detail.

Is there any reason that you have used Pro and not Freestyle Cages though?

Quality Bike.

The SST coaster hub seals the deal for me. Is it built with Race Lace (Cross Five I think) Spoke pattern.

Adam

Lovely build  8)

I would love to see you taking this on the London ride no matter what the weather, but I would swap the Wheels & Tyres even if it's dry, the rest of the parts will clean/refurb etc, but the wheels & Tyres will never be the same & you may struggle to find Nos replacements  :(

Hey Adam, congrats.  I know that wasn't an easy build to complete and it looks awesome if I do say so myself.   FYI, I believe those ACS levers went from me, to Norm, to you.  Sure wish I had my original.  Woody.

Woody, the ACS levers and Woody Z's i got from you are still here in my collection of parts

Great build Adam, glad i could help you out... and also help you spend more money to finish it off just like my one!  :2funny: :LolLolLolLol:

Norm.

Yeah, thanks Norm, it's almost there. I'm in battle mode with a guy from the US over the price on the SST Layback Command Post and Freestyle cages, hopefully i'll have them with me and on the bike in a few weeks and then its just the plate decals to sort :daumenhoch:
I have sorted some SST decals for my straight post today and they should land in the UK in a week or so but thanks for the heads up :daumenhoch:

Alright, alright, keep your wig on Si, you sound like my Dad. :LolLolLolLol:
You do have a point though, if i fook the Rims up i aint gonna get another NOS set thats for sure. But on the other hand if i swap them for something else for the London ride then whats the point in taking it, it will just be another Pink Trickstar, its all or nothing.
I have sorted the Layback SST Command Post now so i think i'll concentrate on getting this spot on for MK and take one of the Quads to London. I was talking to Pooch yesterday over a beer and he echoed your sentiments and said i probably wouldn't enjoy the day as much if i took the Woody as i would be a bit paranoid about fooking it up.

Cheers for your thoughts though Si, its much appreciated mate :smitten:

I have just started building again after a year out of the hobby, what an inspiration this build is and heartening to know this quality of build is still possible-not that I could afford to build it, but if this is possible anything is- to echo what others have said this is the best build I have seen in ages  :4_17_5:

OK Peeps, i have a confession..............................It would seem i have unintentionally lied to you all by saying that my Woody Trickstar was 'finally Finished' but it isn't :( Since i posted up the pics and parts list on Rad, the Museum & OzBMX numerous very knowledgeable people have informed me that i need to change a few things to get it spot on to Woodys bike BITD. I have thefore taken heed and sourced a set of Freestyle Hutch Cages and will powdering the Bodies White, A correct Black & Chrome Izumi Chain and most importantly a Layback SST Command Seatpost (i nearly cried paying for that one) I still need to source a sensibly priced Phil Spider and I will also change the Decals to what they should be and all cables will be dated 85.
As soon as its done (again) i'll post new pics.

Cheers

Right, i got the correct Black & Chrome Izumi chain and also the Layback SST Command Post from the US today and unbelievably they didn't get hit with customs which would have cost me a small fortune 8) Another set of Hutch Bodies arrived a few days ago as did the Hutch Freestyle cages so i'm only waiting on one thing and Del to wave his wand with the plate decals and then i can get it built again.

Just picked this up from Vince (mincer) today after changing a few parts over to the correct parts:

NOS Black & Chrome Izumi chain
NOS Phil Wood Spider
NOS Tuf Neck Chainring
Restored SST Layback Command Post
Re-Powdered Pedal Bodies
Re-Finished Hutch Freestyle Cages
All Cables dated 85
Just got to change the Plate decals, hopefully next week and this will be 100% accurate
