Title: Project X Now finished , NOW WITH UPDATE ,,,,, LOL
Post by: Darren KAP on March 06, 2012, 08:14 PM
I've been tinkering with this idea and decided to have a go , we all know old school brakes are great to look at but pants if you want them to work , I started with a 1984 Hutch Trick Star got it stripped back to bare metal then got a front  hub from a road bike , rear came from a rock/trail bike , getting the lugs/mounts  just right took a bit a doing but i'm more than happy with the look now , i brazed the lugs and cable guides  on so if i wanted to remove them at a later date i could do so with ease . The discs are 160mm and work mega , i'll be using this as my rider now instead of the Badlander so it's been built with a purpose flatland , ramps  :smitten:  i'll let the pics do the talking , i'll put a spec up shortly

Thats the bollocks that Darren  :daumenhoch:

Lovely bit of brazing and loving the pools and blue grip tape.
All that extra brake setup suits the trickstar to a tee for me  :4_17_5:

The bike itself looks really nice, white/blue is a great colour combo  :daumenhoch: but I've never been a fan of discs on a BMX,  Theres a few at our local track and yes they work well but sometimes too well.

200 years ago they used to burn people for lesser crimes than this (they probably still do up north..)  :)

Only joking..  That is a build with balls!!  Made me smile..

Good work..

It's different, you said that to me on the phone, but I defo wasn't expecting this. I like the Hutch build itself, but discs on a BMX are just too much for me.  :-\

However, you get a massive thumbs up from me for the imagination and commitment on this, let's face it, you could have tried this mad fabrication on a Burner or a tatty Goose, you didn't know if it would work, but on a Hutch takes it off the scale, top effort pal. :daumenhoch:

Just my sort of thing this  :daumenhoch:

Got nothing but total respect and admiration for the builds you see on here but alot of em do conform to using the relatively small desirable parts bin. When mods are done to the beautiful quality Darren has done it only enhances the world we call bmx.

Nice one Darren,  :4_17_5: I will get you a set of my prototype brakes over as soon as i pull my finger out   ;)  :daumenhoch:

i've got to ask, why didn't you just use pitbull brakes? more's the point. if you want a new school bike with old school looks, get some tubing and get on the mandrel/saw/etc and make your own with modern geometry and the old design. piece of piss for a one off.

Using a pitbull would be easy and boring , and yes i'm also looking at building a new school bike with old school looks , i can get the tubing off one of my suppliers and i've already spoken with the laser cutters i use  ;) so watch this space , but i need to decide which old school look i want  :daumenhoch:

Darren that is genius and you've actually created a Hutch I want to have a go on. Top messing with people's heads, top mod Skills and top colour scheme.

Still don't think I'll ever want to own a Hutch though - why not do it to one of your Badlanders next? At least they ride a bit like a new school with the front end geometry and you know a 25/9 drivetrain works.

Cheers bud  :daumenhoch:  must admit i am toying with the idea of doing a Badlander  ;) you know i've always loved the look of your blue and white Badlander  :smitten: :4_17_5:

Don't get me wrong....

I Love the idea..... And the engineering is spot on.... It also looks great

BUT.... why do it to an original frame...  you have loads of money Darren that's pretty clear

BUT.... In my mind you could have had Standard bikes build you just this, made to measure (100% Custom)  and in my books would have been 100 times sweeter....?

I love the oldschool for its history (that includes the bad brakes) and I love the newschool for development.

In the same breath I wouldn't think twice about upgrading the brakes on an old custom car, so I guess I'm being a little 2 faced here.....

NICE WORK  :daumenhoch:

Thanks for all the feed back guys  :daumenhoch:, like I've said before I've built it to ride and be different  , at the end of the day if I decide to put it back to standard I could do that easily and have it sprayed in a morning  , it was a great project to do and I enjoyed the challenge.

Thanks again guys  :daumenhoch:         Kappy

NICE WORK  :daumenhoch:  cheers for the comments , i know i could get a company to build be a bespoke frame set but were would the challege be and the satisfaction it would just be like any other build prep and spray the frame then assemble, with the Hutch i needed to work through all the issues along the way , at the end of the day what ever one does its all about the enjoymen , i haven't butchered the frame i could quite easily put it back to standard and have it sprayed within the day  :daumenhoch:

Thanks again for all the great  feed back

Thats what our hobbie is all about, we can all get the same parts, build bikes similar but different....
But it takes foresight & a big set of balls do do something off the chart.
Well done Darren :smitten:
