This thread has been evolving for a few weeks now, basically Joff (Norty40) and I have been working out how we could help with assting Paul Barlow get back on a BMX bike, well weve made a start and could do with some good old fashioned Radster community help :daumenhoch:
Introduction
Paul Barlow (Rad name - Paulb113 ) and I grew up together in Kitt Green, Wigan we lived 500 yards apart on a new estate with the grid tops sticking up 150mm out of the tarmac which made great ramps to fly over
and rode out BMX bikes in the sun everyday I can remember. I dont think Paul will mind me mentioning he is by nature a quiet family guy albeit when he on a BMX bike he just amazing
Paul was from the outset in a different league to the other lads on a bike, I remeber not long after the BMX scene exploded in 1982 and Christmas day he had a audience of wide eyed kids watching him do tricks on his Raleigh Ultra Burner that we could not believe he could do let alone what he actually knew exisited...Paul managed to destroy a few Raleigh Burners in that first 6 months and I think they actually refused to replace them after the second or third time ;D,
This is were Paul started to become serious with his Freestyle riding that spanned fom a 13 year old to retiring at 31 and in that time he rode with some of the best including Bob Haro when he came to town once, he is now a settled man with family and more recently his children.
From the Burners Paul went straight to a Haro Freestlyer Gen 1 bike and obviously moved through the Haro range with Masters, Bash guards etc , MRD Badlanders, Hutch TrickStar 2's, Craig Cambells etc my personal favourite being his white Porsche re-finished Hutch Trickstar 2 with 24 Karat gold plated components :smitten:
Pauls Dad Alan was always making us ramps and Bunny hop stands to which we thrashed over and over ( Paul actually beat the world record for the bunny hop) and never wrote in to confirm it... :daumenhoch:
Alans Garage was a bmx graveyard with destroyed/snapped bmx's everywere and every colour of Skyway you could ask for hung up, most were welded up albeit they didn't last long before he replaced them, Pauls Hutch died when attempting a 6 foot drop off at speed whilst throwing a 360 in the mix, he carried it home in two half's :'(
Fast forward to today you need a hankerfchief here,,....sharp intake of breath.....Alan threw the lot away .....yes you read that right, skipped an absolute fortune's worth.... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Paul came on the Radport day with the Radsters on my GT and loved it being his first time back on an old school bmx, popping the odd quiet trick here and there which just brought it all back for me and that was the moment I thought I have to do something to get a bike for him. Now I am not a rich man if I were I would buy him the best bike possible and I am not alone in this quest, Joff ( Norty40 ) has more than offered to help so were in this boat together , Paul simply put is not really in a position to spend money on building a bike albeit if he were he would give his right arm to do so were doing our best to build him a bike and we need some help, well a lot of help to be honest, we have no budget because we have no money.... :'(
Paul is quite simply the best Freestyle rider I ever saw and he can still do these tricks, well most of them at 43.. :daumenhoch:
To start with we will be building a Haro Freestyler for Paul, with the help of another Top Radster we have managed to locate a Haro Freestyler frame and Forks which Super Bike Dan has very Kindly offered his services to treat to a spanking Powder coating and thats a massive start to the project for Joff and me, other Radsters have offered free components and to again mention we are extremely grateful for any help we can get form the Rad Community to help us build this and present it to Paul finished, I ve asked him to put a little display on at MK13 which Iam more than sure he will do for us to enjoy....
So Gents, we have a powdered frame and forks, we need everything else, can you help us out guys ?
Can I ask we post and list out what parts have been offered and who thay came from, at the end of this we have another little surprise to all that helped us..... :daumenhoch:
A few shots of Mr Barlow in action, we have many more too...

Just seen this post and very gratefull to Darren, Joff and everybody who is helping out!! although I think Darren still has his rose tinted glasses on from the 80's! I wasn't that good. I was a bit bigger and older that Darren BITD and I did have a habbit of telleing the local press I was a BMX expert with a £1100 bike for a laugh and got myself in the local paper a few times plus turning up with a bike imported from America with gold plated parts you didn't have to do much riding the chinese whispers helped to exagerate the stuff I did. Some of the things people said I could do and did were very amusing. You will all be asking for you parts back. It's been great getting back in touch with people from the 80's again aslo done the same with roller skating.I rode from age 12 to 30.

HiPaul,
Modest as ever, :LolLolLolLol:
Everyone that rode BMX BITD knew Barlow for his freestyle riding, these are amongst a few names I have etched in my memory with BMX, one is the wigan rocket Dylan Clayton and the other is you :4_17_5:
Incidentally that's me in the picture holding my Pro Star and possibly Chrissy's Raleigh Aero Pro for you to bunny hop over ... Unless my eyes are tricking me your about 30"-36" off the floor there mr Modest :4_17_5:

Lol I worked on the bean line installation as the project cost controller during the MPO project. When first installed the conveyor rubbers used to disintegrate when they went through the blanchers causing bits of black rubber to fall into the beans and generate shedloads of complaints Staff Shop used to be good, unlabelled tins a penny each! Just needed to know how to decifer the product code printed on the tin to work out what you were buying!

Great read that Marty, my brother-in-law is the operations manager of M&E at Heinz he's a bright cookie :smiley6600:
I had been going to Heinz since I was a tot, my Nan worked there in Purchase Ledger, I knew all those product codes off by heart Honesti would have won junior Mastermind if they would have had a 5 year old on there :4_17_5:

Purchase Ledger, I knew a few of the ladies that worked on there; Atherton and Cheetham were their surnames but I guess that they would be too young to be your gran! I remember when the staff shop was built too, I also worked on the project to build the R&D centre and new admin block at the front of the factory! We used to have offices down the back of the factory near the steam towers, lovely portakabins!

Awesome thread...... :daumenhoch: Feelin the love!!! :smitten:

TimBB, I fell off at all the great places to ride in Wigan!we spent loads of time at Pem school and the old Asda. When did you ride? was it in the 80s
The skaters I rode with were Alan aspinall, Christian Johnson, Bob (ian) Barlow. I also rode with Chris Mahoney a bit before he was famous! I also remember going to Ashton as they had jumps there think it was near Dave Arnolds house, guy with mini ramp in is back garden.
The build looks like it's going well, can't wait to have a go on a bike again.

Hiya Paul,
I remember you, Porters wood i think? Yeah spent a part of my mis spent youth all through the early and mid 80s in and around Wigan,....Like you say skating all the best places, Winstanly woods was a favourite too, I did my roller Skating at the rink flirting with BADDH's sister and ALL her mates!!!!!!, and my ramp skating at Warrington and my BMXing @ 3 sisters, I remember a massive ramp at Rose Bridge school in Pem and a saw my first ET Kuwahara ridden by Jason Grove , . And freestlye a bit like you everywhere, we even found out that Alan, from ALANS BMX fame had a ramp at his mum & dads house so we found out where it was and knocked on. Funnily enough they let us on for a while. All this fun and frolicks continued until i found wharehouse parties in Blackburn ETC, I know Bob and the boys all heavilly into their music if i remember rightly. My memory fades aver that some what .
See you soon, I will have remembered more by then i hope??
TimBB

Thanks again :daumenhoch:
Ok consider it done..!

Darren. I am sure his name was Dave Arnold? lived in Ashton in makerfield he had a ramp in his back garden, he also did skateboarding and was into lake jumping also went with him a few times but didn't have the nerve to do it!! think it was Jumbles country park people ding bouble back flips into water etc!
@8.24 mins on the first you tube clip, there's a lad wearing a Jail Cell Recipes sweatshirt. That was Dave Arnolds band, signed to Alans Records. Small world ;)
-
The guy in the t-shirt was Dave Arnold as far as I can remember it was a jump they built in Ashton in makersfield . I was lucky I didn't hurt myself on that fall.
-
suprised no ones mentioned Scott and Paul Hanson yet , they had robo R gussets , or Jason Brown all originally from Highfield . also Alister head who is a member on here "R AL " . also Steven Grace aka Gracey from Hawkley Hall . and Stey Penk from newtown he had a torker :daumenhoch:

I know them lot Lenster :daumenhoch: Right I am off to get Owens on this thread too
I rode a lot on my Auties estate to behind the Ben Johnson at Marus Bridge with Dylan, Lee and a few lads on there we used to go the three sisters over the backs, tell you what though that King Kong used to scare me as a lad and those whoops bit hard when you Cased them .... I've still got the dents in my shins to prove that.
The first Race I did there was on my Pro Star with Yellow Skyways off a mates Tuff burner, weighted a ton but I won both Moto's don't think I took a breath all the way round ..... Saw stars passing over the finishing line. :idiot2:
Last parts required
1. Crank
2. Brake cables to suit a Giro in blue or white or green.
Tats it after this I think lads. :4_17_5:
If I do say so myself I am blown away with you all in this thread, Once were powdered and building we Promise this is going to get even better when you see the plans we have with this one.

yeah...still live there....that's me and then Robbie the singer at 9 mins 15 secs watching the kids taking the beatdown!
Above is a reply from Dave Arnold on Facebook. Were was the pub? It looks like the poacher in Winstanley?
I remember the tips near Pemberton train station very well and watching Dylan Claton jump over a massive gap there.
-
Yes Paul it was the Poacher, right next to Winky woods that's still there today with loads of jumps, the kids call one the Coffin, I thought it was a smallish lump on the ground. :LolLolLolLol:

Gyro cables in blue or green you might struggle for on here... upper and lower GT ones on ebay for a tenner :daumenhoch:

OK so going off topic again, However i cannot let the pictures posted by BADBALDIE pass without comment.
Some VERY fond and life changing memories from those pictures, "the yo yo", the big hill, rode down there a number of times, however on the first attempt i blacked out and arrived black, blue and winded at the bottom.
There was a half pipe well sort of which was really hard to get out of, in the middle of the tips. Along with other random jumps.
Along the side of the railway line there was a small set of jumps and ramdom peices of plywood,of which we made a reasonable jump, of which i manged to get fully flat out with a table top and get stung by a wasp in mid flight which resulted in me ditching in mid air and arriving on the floor back, blue bruised and winded and at the far end of the tips there was an indoor track, Ahhh so many memories.
Steve pank, Si Brown, infact all of the names menitoned i have fallen off with all of them. :LolLolLolLol:
Thanks again,
TimBB
-
a few more riding spots not mentioned yet .......... Pony Dick small bit of slag heap, Jays wood. behind Jason Browns house up in Winstanley were the older lads made a track were you jumped over the tarmac path leading into the woods, the Slipper works just of Tunstal lane , were the big wooden gates fell of their hinges and were made into a hugh jump. Triangle Valve loads of jumps.drop offs and made around there.

Ha ha Triangle valve, i bet the people in Bandag tyres or was it Rathbones, were upset that they designed the entrance where the drop in and jump out ran straight accross their reception. The BIG jusmo and having to get into the slipper works through the window!!! must have been mad,

I've got one for you. " Egypt". Or the Redie known to the Beech hill lads. Behind Gus and Heinz

-
Joff Darren. Do you think green is a good idea for the frame and forks? Thanks for all the help.
The og decals we have for the frame are on a white background so a white frame would probably be the best option Paul :-\ It's your bike though so it's upto you ;)
-
Thanks Joff. I will go for the white frame and forks. Thanks paul
-
I am with Joff with White Abeit we might switch it up with other bits and bobs, blue, green and white will work if we get it right :4_17_5:

So am I ....... should be a right fook up :LolLolLolLol:
I think the next stage us in the hands of SBD. :coolsmiley:
It sure is Dan . I have stripped the frame and forks so it's just a case of Darren and Paul choosing what bits need powdering and then sending it off to SBD :daumenhoch:
Think Paul wants to build it up with all the bits first so we can have a 'before and after' pic .
It probably won't be a showstopper but if it gets him back on a BMX then thats all that matters to me and ofcourse the fact loads of you generous RADsters have come up tops yet again :4_17_5:
I'll whizz a pic up once it has been built in it's 'mutant' form before SBD gets his hands on it ;D

Cheers Paul, mine was actually an FST Frame as well, but was decalled as a sport when I got it, so rather than remove the decals and buy new ones, just went with it.
Looking forward to seeing how this shapes up :daumenhoch:
-
Thanks WINI. So many makes, models and colours is such within only a couple of days makes it difficult. I had a bike done in bright green BITD so I am still tempted with green, but white also looks cool!

-
Yeah the parts list is cool! Really looking forward to seeing it built now!
-
:4_17_5: BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT BUILD IT
-
Im swaying more towards White tbh , that one of Wini's looks great 8) We have the decals aswell bar the headtube one ( the one we thought was a headtube badge seems too big) so it saves Del doing a new set :-\
It's your choice though lads ;) White or Green it should look cool and at least it means you don't have to borrow bikes now Paul :LolLolLolLol:
Anybody know where this decal we thought was a headtube one goes ..... handlebar decal maybe ? :-\
it's the one just above the sport decal to the right slightly covered by the spoke wheel .

They don't look like my old pedals..
If you're not using them can I have them back?
Your pedals are on the bike ;) .... I know because i swapped the 9/16" spindles out of the Black ones and put them in your 1/2" ones .
There was a couple of items that we had two off , bars and tyres spring to mind so im sure Darren and Paul will offer these back to the people who kindly donated them in the first place .
It's more or less built , just needs the chain shortening and the large freewheel changing on the rear , it's looking good for a throw together 8)

So close now :LolLolLolLol:
Joff is changing freewheel, shornening chain tomorrow.blue skyway brake blocks, and top gyro cable and pegs on order and looking out for a decent blue seat, hopefully a Kashimax Handler.
I would like to say a massive thank you to everybody who helped out on this build that BADDH and NORTY40 sorted for me :)
-
As Norty says we do have a couple of parts spare so these are can be returned if required guys
Paul can you list these for the guys ;)
Just wanted to say this build has given us all a great deal of pleasure and I am sure Paul will do the Haro justice and pop a trick or two for us on the Rad rides in 2013. ::)
As we know this has been a RADBMX donated build of components with no colour in mind to be fair it looks quite good !
To be honest we were made up to have kindly donated a full compliment of parts to actually complete the build the rest is a bonus :4_17_5:
-
Im eagerly awaiting the little surprise you have for us that helped..?
not that I give to receive :LolLolLolLol:
-
That's looking great Paul :4_17_5:
-
pair of whitewall tyres, pair of black grips and a pair of copy cw bars not used.
Thanks to everybody who helped :) think it looks great!
-
looks awsum Paul :4_17_5: big heads up to Joff and Baddh for their team work in sorting this ride out .. this is what RAD BMX is all about :daumenhoch:

The new Dia compe seatclamp a bit of a nightmare seat spins when trying a wheelie even when very tight :'(
-
Your gonna need a shim for that post of it won't nip up tight enough mate.
Great job though, decals look spot on. :daumenhoch:
-
Cheers Dan. Where would I get a shim from, and what size? Decals are great :4_17_5:
-
Nice :daumenhoch:
You'll have to fetch it one of the lock in's at Blackpool :daumenhoch:

Ask about on here, or make one from a piece of aluminium drinks can. :daumenhoch:

Sweet ride Paul, looks great!
And as Lennie said, great work Joff and Baddh in making it happen :4_17_5:

Wini, Joff and I only asked for donations, the Radbmx community turned the thread into reality mate :4_17_5:
For that we all built this one :daumenhoch:

Lovely bike Paul!! Now get some vids of you riding on Youtube and show us all what youve got :daumenhoch:
-
Gavin if I put up a video of what I can do now everybody would ask for the parts back :LolLolLolLol: I bent the seatpost a bit trying a Switzerland squeker :D bike is pretty heavy need to try and get it a bit lighter! The peggs weigh a ton, going to swap for aluminium ones. I could bunny hop well over 40" BITD but struggled to get off the ground yesterday :LolLolLolLol:

Bit of practise and you'l be back to a good standard Paul :daumenhoch:
Yeah the bunny hop thing is a bit annoying when you first get back on a bike....I'd pretty much lost all my mojo when I first started back.

The bike is the same weight as it was BITD..! Its something else thats a few stone heavier ;D ;D
-
Lee the bike is heavy even just picking it up! the pegs I got weigh about a stone each :LolLolLolLol: will get some lighter ones. I was heavier BITD but the muscle to fat ratio has changed :D

A short clip of a bunny hop I assume 20+ years ago! will try and see if I can improve on getting up a curb

Soon as I get my new brake levers I will put a & e on standby and try to learn some old school tricks again
-
I will give the whitewalls a go, we were going to put tuffs and whitewalls on but one of the tuffs missing bearings and cracks in front hub. Think I will save up for some high pressure tyres :)
-
Best get some body armour paul, knee and elbow pads to start with :LolLolLolLol:
