Right
I have been threatening to start this for some time now , so here goes
Word is there were 1000 of these frames made, I hope not for my sake.
What I want to create here is an accurate fact file outlining the TRM story from start to finish
I have some interesting insight , which will become apparant over the next few weeks / years
I need all the help I can get , so your memories from BITD are going to be invaluable , not to mention interesting to other members.
any stories, pictures, articles etc etc you have relating to stechford cycles & TRM...............I need !!

Ahh didn't know they did other frames apart from the DTT ones :daumenhoch:
Always really liked the look of the frames, just thought the graphics looked a bit pony (sorry not trying to be insulting but I think they would have maybe sold a lot more otherwise)
I bet they're great for framestands :2gunsfiring_v1:

No official frame numbers, hence I'm making them up!! your obviously not stupid, youve just got your hands on one of the most iconic british freestylers :daumenhoch:
Stu,
How many times have you been over that frame .........haha. seriously though can't find link now but could be winnet93,scorcher mick ?? anyway someone said their frame had "24" stamped on it.someones got it!!
I did think about asking Del to make a numbered TRM decal to stick on the bottom bracket with the UNOFFICIAL frame no on ..........we'll see
I'm just interested to see how many are still out there, and get them all on RADBMX :daumenhoch:

Great work 80's bmxer ;)
You've put me down as owning 0018 bitd day, which is true :) But I was wondering how you come to number the frame 0018?
I can tell you if it helps, that the frame was bought at the end of 83, for £115 and it was in white. I sold it to a nipper in Andover, Hants. He loved the rattle can green/orange paint job I did ::)
-
no the number hes put on is just the number in his list not the numbers of the frames or anything
-
i got my TRM frame from "stevied" of here 2 years ago and found some forks on ebay with in 2 weeks for £60  it was chrome with chewed drop outs its now restored and painted white the forks had been cut down but "steve69" did a great job sorting them out :daumenhoch: will put pics up later

Sorry .......I should have made it clearer
I am numbering these bikes in the order I find them on internet searches or references to bikes being sold etc
there are some forum conversations dating back to 2002 which include transactions for TRMs
I suspect the list of around 40 at the moment will actually reduce, as I guess that some of the ones I have numbered are the same bikes
Just need to know who bought /sold what ,when and to/from who.
winnet93 has had about 5 of them in the last 8-10yrs , so he holds the key at the moment to cleaning up the list
Then I'll tidy up the thread and make it easier to view
I am working on Getting the facts of the TRM story together as we speak, so will keep you all posted.
Thanks for all your help and interest so far :daumenhoch:

Exactly when I got it and from where I really can,t remember
We were always swapping bits and pieces around,me and a couple of mates, and I think the forks broke, although despite serious abuse the frame was bullet proof I'm so happy we took loads of pic,s bitd, so I have plenty of trm action shots if you need some?
I got a Haro master for Xmas 84, so I must of sold it just before then.
I was really into freestyle back then,so all my bikes are freestylers,
I,ve now only got a few though,Haro master 84,gt performer84,hutch trickstar84,redline prostyler86,Cw california85
So the bike I would love to build would be a trm,but they have never came up at affordable money would love one though.
Look forward to more info on the trm history

Nice to meet you last night...
So I'll put my bikes story in writing so you have it.
In 1990 I was riding a Burner that I'd painted in black hammerite and it was pretty dead, no brakes, I'd gone over the bonnet of a Fiesta on the way to scouts on it once due to this. A friend I sailed with said he'd got a nice bike and would I like to buy it... I asked if I could borrow it while I persuaded my old dears to hand over £35 quid. Back then they didn't have £3.50 so it was never going to happen but I got to ride it for a few weeks.
Anyways - after a while he had it back and that was that....
About 6 months later I was at the Sailing Centre at Babbs Mill and he came down - I think he just wanted a pint or somet so he said I could have it for £5.... needless to say I had it.
Back then it has Red Skyways, Green Tyres, Red MX Brakes with Green Cables a few of the stickers on it and a lay back seat post.
Over the years until I could drive I used it religiously, eventually ditching the front Skyway when the bearings broke, my brother used it for a bit in the late 90's and it has survived several theft attempts. Since about 2001 it's sat in my parents back garden rusting away.
In about 2006/7 I was bored so pulled it out, cleaned it up and got some new bits so I could use it again and then joined this place - I didn't even know what it was but the guy down at the Cycle Shop in Washwood Heath used to call it the Totally Radical Machine when I took it to him.
The dent in the back stay has been there since I got it and it has the original forks.
It's survived another theft attempt since I got it back out and as such it sits in my garage with a motorcycle lock around it.......... I wont ever sell it as it's a great piece of my own personal history, I'm going to put it on the wall at some point when I live in a gated mansion LOL
Cheers
Jake
PS - I'm 32 and have owned the bike for 22 years
-
thats a great story :)
just seen mines bike 100 :LolLolLolLol:

&
Derrick Owens ( 1984 NBMX champion on a TRM, (see pic)
Both have shown a real interest in tracing the history of the TRM so...watch this space

Here’s my TRM which I have owned from new, originally white it was repainted red a few years later. It still gets ridden every now and again and apart from the grips and the tyres it’s still as I used to ride it in the 80’s.

Got one finally & thanks to another very kind Rad mamber :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:!
I'm guessing this is one that's not reared it's head before, all i know is that it's been in a shed for 30 years & you can tell. Surface rust a plenty & an interesting paint job, I doubt it's OG but you never Know as I seem to remember that they did advertise painting them in just about any colour. No decals just raw & I mean raw which is why i reckon it was stripped back in the day & rattle canned.
My best mate had one in chrome back in the day but always i thought that there were serial numbers on the bottom of the BB ? Maybe he'd had his postcode stamped or something like that ? Anyway here you go. Resto to follow. :Great_Britain:

Nice one :daumenhoch:
I need to update the list and correct a few errors
Who did you get it off? Or do they want to remain anonymous ?
Still have loads of info/history to add, just too busy
Doesn't look as if it was a different colour underneath, unless it was stripped to bare metal, seems a bit unlikely if it was rattle canned 30 yrs ago.
Would be interested to know how much you paid ,cos I'm nosey ::)

Hi Pascoe
As you know I've actually got a TRM again, so my number 18, can go from had one bitd day, to WHITE ;)
This is me in early 83 I think when I just got it ;D Can believe I got into those jeans :-\
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w92/faze3_photo/IMG_0171.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/faze3_photo/media/IMG_0171.jpg.html)
Anyway found one on ebay a few months back, looks ok in pics, but chrome was pretty tatty etc.
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w92/faze3_photo/669b75a3aa4fe298eac99ec24fd632ab_zps0ab8d56a.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/faze3_photo/media/669b75a3aa4fe298eac99ec24fd632ab_zps0ab8d56a.jpg.html)
So had it powdered, and added DELCALS ;)
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w92/faze3_photo/IMG_0159.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/faze3_photo/media/IMG_0159.jpg.html)
mine was white in the day, so really wanted a white one, I did think about orange cos that's the colour I sprayed it bitd, but decided white was the way :)
(http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w92/faze3_photo/IMG_0161.jpg) (http://s174.photobucket.com/user/faze3_photo/media/IMG_0161.jpg.html)
I doubt very much I'll ever build it up, so my record shelf is the final resting place for this ol fella :P

Great to meet a load of good blokes over the weekend at my first MK, and as my head is bursting with new info thought it might be about time I started to update this page.
First thing I learnt was that there are a few design changes with some folks TRM's, If your frame has a strengthening plate welded to the underside of the seat tube and also another to reinforce the rear brake mount, I suspect that these are later built frames
I would like all the owners to check their bikes, and let me know ..........either way , yes or no...........if they have this modification
I may PM you directly if I get a poor response to my demands!
The" Legend" aka ANIMAL sent me this great bit of history which adds an interesting twist to the TRM story ,given that the address is about a mile from my house I have no excuse not to follow this lead up, who knows there might be a garage full of unsold TRM,s there!!
I think this is from 1985-6
(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-72oGUdVZ6NM/UhEu_M4h_FI/AAAAAAAAA-I/Lzf_PTmfiv0/s640/TRM%2520tamworth%2520rd.jpg)
Was also great to finally meet MANI, great bloke and has a real gem of a photo of a prototype TRM race frame for us all to see ..watch this space
-
Cool :coolsmiley: Anymore ideas since MK fella ? U need 2 ask more questions about the race frame I recon :daumenhoch:
-
My TRM has the dual plates and also has thinner gauge material
Which came first. I would suggest this one the the beefed up the plates due to stress raisers caused by the plates. But who knows

This was "MANI"s bike back in the day
I need to check a few things out with him but the story so far is
Lad went to buy a new TRM from Stechford Cycles in '83, but non in stock.
However they said he could buy this "second-hand" prototype instead.
(note the tubes are Not crossed over)
Mani then bought it off the original owner , he later swapped/sold it
I have numbered it TRM #0000 ...

This story gets better and better bud  That looks the nuts eh ? :daumenhoch:

Just bumped in to Nigeb , who has met the bloke who made the jigs for the TRM freestyler, obviously I have loads of questions to ask him, and luckily he only lives a couple of miles from me so I will try to arrange a meet up
anyway , he reckons the x-frame was borrowed from that of the NORTON Featherbed

Hey guys.
I think they are one of the first set of pads made. I was around when the first frames came out and had a white one with red skyways and a chrome one with skinnies for racing. I rode for TRM around 1981. My Mom made the first pad set as nothing could be brought that would suit the frame, she made a good few sets and I would say thats a set that she made as you can see they are not perfect. The first sets had stickers on that would peel off and then we got them screen printed. Wish I still had mine thats for sure.

My phone somehow has randomly taken me to this thread.... It's bloody amazing!
This just shows you the importance of the Rad site as opposed to FaceAche.
I bet there are thousands of brilliant threads like this that can be accessed for research if people need them.
It's important that newer members and FB members are made aware of the wealth of knowledge that can be found on here in old threads! :slayer:

Yes, that is me mate.
I picked this bike up near enough complete from a guy in Walsall. Chrome wasn't great so she's been re done. Building her as race bike that's what my memories of them were. Always used to knock about with Derrick and I'm still in touch with Jon Turnbull. Been asking him what parts he had on his so I can replicate it.
I'll put some pics up of how she's coming along.
Nick
