Welcome to my resto & build thread for my "grail" build, a mango 88 RL20II.
I scored the F&F & some of the parts from Museum.
I had some other parts I'm going to use on the build - here's a pic of what I have:
The set isn't without its issues; the forks have damage to the steer thread
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/ARL2THREAD_zps44f36edd.jpg)
...and a couple of dents on one of the fork legs
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/RL3DENT_zps76705422.jpg)
Finally, the 990 studs have been removed.
Some parts are going to need work to make them show worthy - I'm no expert but I'll be doing my best.
The frame has an 87 date, there are no other dents or dings so I'm happy I can get this restored back to its former glory.

Did some work on the seat today.
Before pics
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/1seatunderbefore_zps5f5f4dd5.jpg)
I used a scouring pad & some wet & dry to sort out the rough edges plus a healthy amount of Flash - vintage edition!!
For the rails I used Vinegar & tin foil (dull side)
The scouring pad helped me keep the textured look to the seat
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/2seatfulldone_zpse228708a.jpg)
The only issue I had was keeping the "Redline" logo, I decided to work around it. Finally I smoothed out the rough edges on the rear with wet & dry.

Went to Kappy's workshop last week to get my forks fixed, they had a couple of dents in one of the legs & a damaged steer thread.
Here's the resto to the dents:
The forks has scrapes & scratches on the legs, here's Kappy sanding them out:
Scrapes gone
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/EXTSALES10L/Desktop/A2SCRATCHESGONE_zps4d760786.jpg)
Next was the dents to the fork leg - putting some weld in
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/EXTSALES10L/Desktop/A3DENTWELDING_zps00b0b850.jpg)
Making it even

Done - Darren did a great job - dent? What dent?
-
After sorting out the scrapes & dents the steer thread was next.
Kappy said he had a spare set of forks I could have to use as donors - they were pretty nice ones too - early 90's Haro's.

No going back now - RL Fork gets sliced
(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/EXTSALES10L/Desktop/B3CUTRLFORK_zps2ca1f716.jpg)
I was quite happy with a straight welding job, but Darren put a collar on the inside of the fork to add strength.
Straight & welding up the steer

Fork completed, straight, very nice job - thank you Darren :daumenhoch: - Now ready for some chrome.

The brake studs were missing from the frame, fortunately the thread was still perfect & just needed some replacements: now ready for a paint job.

Here's my DX resto:
Here's a pic when I got them, part stripped, nice survivor's :)
(http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/Ped1_zps201a3bb4.jpg) (http://s901.photobucket.com/user/BanachekBMX/media/Ped1_zps201a3bb4.jpg.html)
Used some Nitro Mors to strip but hard work, need a wire brush as well:
(http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/Ped2_zps89f04c30.jpg) (http://s901.photobucket.com/user/BanachekBMX/media/Ped2_zps89f04c30.jpg.html)
The paint is hard to remove, so had to go back with paint stipper & a small wire brush:
(http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/ped3_zps24e9e44d.jpg) (http://s901.photobucket.com/user/BanachekBMX/media/ped3_zps24e9e44d.jpg.html)
Finally got the paint of both pedals - then I used some fine steel wool & Autosol to polish the left pedal, just the right one to polish now:
(http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/ac218/BanachekBMX/POLISEDPED_zps6d52c8b9.jpg) (http://s901.photobucket.com/user/BanachekBMX/media/POLISEDPED_zps6d52c8b9.jpg.html)

-
Mike like i said in our pms well done and your face says it all, there was a lot of back and
forth pms on colours and how the paint job should look, well after us both aggreeing on the right colours matched from the decals Mike sent, i painted the whole frame in three differant
colours, sent Mike a couple of pics and he had a nervous pm to me saying the grey didnt look right ??? i reassured him it was spot on to the decal, took some more pics in a differant
part of my work unit that had more light and finally Mike was happy :daumenhoch: so this is
what we go through to get what the customer wants and the look he wanted paid off and won 1st place :4_17_5:, just a normal day at the office :LolLolLolLol:
