I'm restoring an 87 d-tour and debating going with old school mags from the 80's or just picking up a new pair of skyways. What's your opinion on using new skyways for an 80's build?
-
80's , there still cheap enough
-
Plastic wheels suck. They're too flexible and your brakes won't work. Put spoked wheels on. :)
-
I put new Tuffs on my '85 Streetbeat, the purists won't like it, but with modern sealed bearings they're great for riding. I'd recommend getting the axles cut down and the ends rounded off though. :daumenhoch:

If I'm building a race bike I use spokes. If a freestyle bike I use mags. Especially an 87 d-tour, not too fond of how they look with spokes

Yeah I'll probably get og wheels

It is your bike, do what you want with it.

Just trying to get some opinions

You can buy plastic hubbed 80's Tuffs for what you'd pay for a new pair if you're worried about era correctness, to be fair plastic would be right on an 87 anyway

Six spoke Tuffs :daumenhoch:
or Loose ball plastic hubbed Tuffs
OGKs ,,,Perigrinnes,, GT performer mags
Plenty to choose , actual 80's wheels ;)

Depends what year?? We were riding the ""new"" ones in "85 or "86.....?
-
Personally I wouldn't, but then it wouldn't be my place to slate anyone that does, it's your build, your bike, build it whichever way makes YOU happy and then enjoy the ride :daumenhoch:

If I'm going to put it on the wall nope "nono"
If I'm going to ride it yup :daumenhoch:
-
I have done in the past, was for a rider and on a budget - those sealed hubs spin very nicely too

"New" plastic hubs yes but loose ball not sealed bearings, modern Skyways have daft refector holes drilled into them too but as others have said, the good news is that you can find OG for the same money.

I try and use the Pre 2006 Skyway reissue, as they are more in keeping without reflector holes :)
