Old School BMX 1980 - 1988 => Old School Freestyle (frame stands and kickturns galore!) => Topic started by: stockcar3 on June 24, 2014, 04:37 PM

I have seen several threads with reference to what is the "The Holy Grail " but of course Human nature means everyone replies with the bike they as an individual most want. Now an old 80s Catalouge Iron House is very rare (probably because they were so s**t and they broke in half making them easier to throw on the tip) so very hard to find, but that doesnt make it a Holy Grail.
Its a shame as i would love to know what are considered the ultimate top 5 bikes to find.........
However ..... to make this easier i thought i would ask for the following...
Name what you would Consider the top 6 Iconic Old School Freestyle Bikes ?
(This may avoid a list of what we are looking for or would actually would like to own/build)
Whether you like em or not ...which would you consider most iconic ?
Personally speaking
Haro Freestyler 1982
Skyway Ta 1983
Haro Sport 1984
Hutch Trickstar
GT Pro Performer 84
Pk Ripper
But hey, im interested in what you radsters think :-)
-
I would have a DP Firebird Freestyler in my top 6 in place of the PK Ripper above :)
-
Yeah would put the DP instead of the Ripper
-

from a UK perspective you'd have to rate the DP ... but still had to displace any of those.
-
I remember the DP very heavily advertised as a frame and forks kit in all the mags so from a UK sense it was definatley on the wish list of many, but does that make it iconic.
I guess if we are really talking iconic then the Blue and yellow Tuff Burner should be there ....it was probably the advert for BMX that got us all hooked in the first place.
When i say iconic..i mean in the sense that the Chopper and Grifter were iconic....
Therefore perhaps for the UK the Tuff Burner was the most iconic.....and then came the Haro and the Skyway .
Just sayin ;-)
-
Until recently, I had exactly your list.
-
I've never considered a Ripper as a freestyle bike. Only ever saw them on the track bitd.

No you asked what were the iconic freestylers of the 80's.......The MKI Tuff burner is in no way a freestyler.......probably one of THE iconic old BMX of the 80's yes, but a freestyler it is not.
The DP freestyler was the frame set choice of all who rode burners and then wanted to progress.
-
for the mid 80's you have to have the Street Beat as well :coolsmiley:
-
At the risk of flaming your thread, is the Skyway TA, and the PK Ripper, considered Freestyle? I would have put them firmly in the "Race" bucket.
Just sayin', like......
:-[
-
TAs and Rippers were race bikes but used by some heavy hitters for freestyle ... look at Vic Murphy's DBI TA :daumenhoch:
Craig Campbell and Chris Young to name another 2 rippers on TAs for freestyle ... Curb Dogs ... the list goes on!
-
Streetbeat Rob? ... are you having a laugh ;D
I'd swap out the 84 Sport for the DP ... from a UK perspective.

Never heard of Mike Buff ? ;D
-
OK, OK, so the Skyway TA and PK Ripper are Freestyle bikes, and not Race Bikes used for Freestyle.
I stand corrected.
-
Good boy :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:
-
Good boy :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:
:LolLolLolLol:
-
I think the list is pretty bang on, expect the bike always dreamed of owning was a Haro Master in 84 ;)
People rode rippers and T/a's and quads as they were very well made framesets that could take abuse, unlike Burners
Not all of us had parents that would chop a T/a in for a CW freestyler or a Hutch trickstar! Cos they are freestylers ::)
-
for me It would be pretty much the same except there would be a cw freestyler and a vdc , vdc being the holy out of my reach then and especially now I remember seeing my first vdc freestyler in hot wheels in cosham where mick whitlock of whitehawk fame went after whitehawks closed down
haro freestyler
haro sport
skyway ta
vdc freestyler
cw freestyler
quadangle freestyler

You HAVE to have a Performer in there. WIth the world tours of 85 and 86 they brought freestyle to the masses.
The Flying Banana - Iconic FACT! :LolLolLolLol:

I have an 86 pro p (which I do love )but I would have had to had 7 in my list to include that

I'd swap out the 84 Sport for the DP ... from a UK perspective.

loads of good bikes were ridden by top people ... but in a top 6 iconic list? shame on YOU sir :surprise:
-
Why not run a poll on this ... pick 10 bikes and see what people vote as the top 6 :daumenhoch:
-
Ripper, TA & burner are all freestylers when you bolt pegs on em
-
From a personal POV, and what I lusted after BITD:
Haro Master
Haro Sport
GT Performer
Hutch Trickstar
Curtis
TA with all the bolt ons
Never really lusted after a DP because they were pretty low end (covers from onslaught...) :D
-

The Flying Banana - Iconic FACT! :LolLolLolLol:
Agreed. :daumenhoch:
Double agreed :daumenhoch:
TA's and Rippers were race bikes used for freestyle end of :yahoo_silent:
-
I've added a poll for you, is there anything that needs to go in the list before people vote?
By the way you have 6 votes not just 1 :daumenhoch:
-
Ripper, TA & burner are all freestylers when you bolt pegs on em
whatever it takes to help make it palatable for you Rich :teef:
-
I would have chosen a Vincent over a Curtis in my 6.
-
Performer, the rest was pony
-
The Rickman Freestyler has to be on that list surely?
-
lol...rickman...lol
-
Yellow performer end of :daumenhoch:
-
The DP, the reason Radbmx exists :daumenhoch:
-
The most iconic for me will always be the Gen 1 Haro, and the reason is simple. I saw Bob perform at the NEC on his first tour :4_17_5: best roll backs on the planet too.
-

The Flying Banana - Iconic FACT! :LolLolLolLol:
Deffo Fiola on his Flying Banana. Tbh it's the only freestyle bike i clearly remember from bitd. Very much into race bikes then ... and now. :daumenhoch:
-
Yeah, deffo Flyin Nana
That was the one for me.
-
33 voters and 2 didn't vote for a Performer :idiot2:
-
33 voters and 2 didn't vote for a Performer :idiot2:
Protest votes.
I bet they voted UKIP! :LolLolLolLol:
-
Really for me it's a Performer, Haro Sport and Master, Skyway TA and Streetbeat and thats it :yahoo_silent:
-

:LolLolLolLol:
What a great thread, I keep checking on which frameset is winning, this is more interesting than the world cup :daumenhoch:
just a thought, no RL20???
-
gotta be the gen 1 a full 2 years before the perfomer gotta be surely
the father of freestyle ffs
-
Not the most iconic by a long way but without the likes of Stompin Stu and his Goose pushing the boundaries freestyle would be very different. Loads of the guys back then took inspiration from the skaters and even custom BMX/skate tracks were made. :4_17_5:
Nothing to do with the topic but I thought I'd share anyway :LolLolLolLol:
Stu in 77

statistically so tosay with a gen 1

Performer, the rest was pony
+1000000000000000000000 flufly
-
GT Performer
Haro Master
DP Firebird
Hutch Trickstar
MCS Styler
Curtis Freestyle
:daumenhoch:
-
Would put Rickman and Haro Sport over MCS and Curtis
-
Don't know how I missed this thread before... :idiot2:
Rippers and T/a's have no place on a freestyle list...Sure, they were USED for freestyle but only cos there were no lternatives...Craig Campbell rode a Street Beat when they came out...
For me would have to be, in no particular order
1. Haro Gen 1/ Master (more or less same thing!)
2. Gt Performer
3.Street Beat
4.Redline RL 20
5. Haro Sport
6.Hutch Trick Star
-
I think I missed this too.. Weird .., maybe I voted but didn't comment ?
Anyway voting today I'd go...
1. Haro Gen 1
2. GT Pro Performer
3. Haro Sport ( 84 MD )
4. Skyway Street Beat
5. DP Firebird Freestyler
6. Skyway TA
7. Hutch Trickstar
-
Doh!! Okay that's 7! ;D
-
Lets have a new ppoll.. see is things have changed!!
-
I know they're not to everyones (anyones) taste but for me an early Dyno Compe with the bent front forks would have to make the list. The frame itself (and the GT it was based on) spawned every cheap chrome tat frame from the far east to come out for 20 years afterwards and every competitive event I saw pictures of back then had the Dyno logo just about everywhere.
-
Agreed .. Let's have a new poll or 3 polls most Iconic BMX, most iconic freestyler and most iconic race bike ....
All valid categories ... What do you think ?
-
And the one I never saw in the flesh but pictures made me go all funny was the California Freestyle. I think it was the logo more than anything.
-

on the 88 , tis a nice ride especially with the free coaster :smitten:
-
GT Performer all the way.
But.... This poll is the most Iconic not the best bike, so why are we forgetting the bike that most of us started on? The Iconic Raliegh Tuff Burner, I got mine when I was 11/12,so it was 1981, was a springboard to better bikes. I still remember the hot day Dad got me this, I can still smell the cut grass on our front lawn that had just been mowed, inspirational to me, it's parked at the back, but it's still at the front as far as iconic BMX bikes go!
Jas
-
Totally agree Jas ..
We "ALL" well most of us cut our teeth on these as back then that was all that was thrown at us (all we could afford)
My bro had the tuff I had the Ultra in Chrstmas `81 and my sis had the extra (used once and left out the back :knuppel2:)
I loved that bike spent all my time on this for two summers till I got fed up snapping frames I saved up for a Rebel.
Of course we all dreamed of having what the "mag boys" was riding but lack of funds or having to wait for Christmas .
Honestly out of my collection my ultra burner is my Iconic bike..great times.. :'(
-
My take for the top 6 is: you can't on have six bikes in there
Haro Freestyler
Haro Master
Haro Sport
Haro FST
GT Pro performer
Hutch Trickstar
Skyway Street Beat
DP GL plus
TRM
Vincent Airzone
Curtis freestyler

Agree about the Tuff burner being iconic but it's not a freestyle bike, this is most iconic freestyler not street bikes
-
1. Haro Gen 1
2. GT Performer
3. Skyway T/A - didn't almost everybody use them for freestyle at some point bitd?
4. Haro Master
5. Haro Sport/FST - listing them as 1 as they are the same shape
6. Skyway Streetbeat
7 would be Hutch Trickstar
-
GT performer, rest was just comedy
-
GT performer, rest was just comedy
As above..
But my ultra burner was my freestyler

Same as Ady, and my Tuff Burner was my freestyler too,

From 86 to 89 i say the Hutch Trickstar was the most iconic bmx as everyone rode them as all the top vert riders had them and by then it was only the sports and masters you saw as other riders .But different areas of the country had different things as i`m from london and i never saw a vdc bitd as never rode race tracks ,you saw a lot of performers around chingford area because of the ramp
