Well I could probably answer any questions about Space Bars...haha
What's up all you cool BMX'ers in the Great British Isles!!! TJ

Well as you offered: Did the foam in the bars really make them stronger? ???

Well as you offered: Did the foam in the bars really make them stronger? ???
Bloody good question....the answer is yes but to what degree I can't say. I filed a patent for the idea in 1985 and over a decade later during the bid to join France and England one bid was a bridge and I kid you not the steel structure was filled with urathane foam for structual strenth and light weight!!! Had they chose the bridge over the tunnel I could have been a billionaire!! haha.
In 1985 we did a limited production run of handle bars and seat posts with the polyurathane injection foam. The foam is not like what you get today from the hardware store so don't go running out to get some and squirt it into your tubes. It's the "industrial strength" with crazy rates of expansion and probably highy toxic. We had to get a license and permits before we could even buy it to test it. The first few seat posts we did all the caps blew off as the foam expanded and I actually burnt my hand from the heat generated. We kinda gave up on trying to perfect getting the foam in and keeping it in, it was a messy job and many bars and seat posts had to be junked because of caps comming off. To this day I know of one rider who still sports the same Space seat post he got from me back in 85' and it's still straight so I guess that's your answer...TJ

Cool. I've always wondered about that - and now I know ! Thanks TJ. :)

Hi TJ,Did you sell many sets of the bars? I bought mine at the ripe old age of 15 in 85,and i have not seen another set since.I have just restored my master and have just had my SPACE BARS powder coated, back to the original blue,I also have a designer friend trying to re,make the sticker for them. When there finished i will take some photos.Thanks.

That's so great to hear you still have a pair!!! I can't remember how many Space Bars where sold but the numbers were more in the "exclusive" catagory if you know what I mean. If you had a pair then you were dam serious about BMX. Due to the limited numbers and manufacturing expense each Sapce Bar cost more to make than most bars where retailing for back then. Even the 4130 tubing alone was shipped in from the U.S, I felt this is where the best chrome molly was being produced at the time and I'm not one to compromise. I will check for you if there are any original stickers left (slim chance) but you never now there may be somthing at my mums house tucked away in a draw...TJ

Good read buddy TJ, and again... thanks for the bars!!! :coolsmiley:

Back in about '85 my GT Performer was sent to Space for a paintjob back in the 80s, a lovely shade of loud pink. Free sticker, great paint, rode that bike everywhere.
Not sure who I kept calling about the bars, but they probably got a bit sick of me. They were always 'on the way' but I never did see any for sale.
-
woah a bit late on here!
space bars ruled! i had a coupla pairs cos i snapped one pair at the weld (oops) but Space replaced them straight away
i LOVED those bars and today am still attached to bars with the same feel, haro kneesavers, hoffman love handles etc
tj was such a cool/smooth rider too, i remember he came to our town with some kinda stunt carnival thing and afterwards he taught us how to miami hopper!
if anyone has any to sell def pm me!
-
I've only heard of one guy with a set of Space bars and that's Tony Fleming
Terry Jenkins gave him his very own last set I believe as a good friend ,,,, so unfortunately he feels he cannot part em out . :-\
I'd asked him to sell them , because I knew Del wanted some at the time , this was a good couple years ago now :-\
Good luck with your search :daumenhoch:
-
WOW!I had completely forgotten about these bars and Space.I remember having a couple of the round Space stickers on my plate or helmet.Cool thread :daumenhoch:
-
Space painted my Pro Performer Pink! I want those bars.
-
great bars, i love the unusual bars and these fit right in and great thread revival 6 years on :daumenhoch:
-
When I say painted lol, I mean painted Wayne Riders and I then I bought...
-
Right guys, I bagged these a little while ago and really just looking to confirm they are the genuine item.
You can tell the chrome is original and I measured them to be 28" wide.
Can anyone shed any light on them? Can I still get the decals from anywhere?
Cheers :)

i was the underbidder on these sorry about that terry ;D, they were the only bars of this shape so no-one copied them as they weren't popular back in the day , i would guess you'd have to get someone to photograph/scan the decals on a set and see if you can copy them ,weren't these supposed to have foam inside
-
:LolLolLolLol: That's cool bro. I still think they were worth what I paid due to the rarity aspect of them and the condition. They are/were filled with foam but it has hardened and crumbled with age. I have bits falling out as dust and small pieces :crazy2:
Oh well. They are really nice though and I will find a use for them somewhere :daumenhoch: I will speak to Del and see if he can do his magic with just the images in this thread to work with, decal wise.
-
yeh really interesting bars and probably only set youll ever see sold , i'll have second dib dobs oif you dont use them ;D
-
Cool Bars!
I have a wee card here at home with the SPACE logo on it.
It was a colour swatch for the different colours they were offering as custom paint jobs on your own ride.
It's on my instagram, but i dont think it's in my photobucket - i'll try and copy it over and post it up here later on.

-
I've always loved the look of those bars 8) they're just dripping cool
Good buy Terry :daumenhoch:
-
I have a set of these bars in original green with original stickers, just been storing them for if i ever get round to a green haro master build which i doubt i will have time/money to do.
on the rear of the crossbar there is an sticker saying Hy-Jumpers pro series ? not sure if tht origianlly came with the bars or was applied by previous own (unforntunately this stick has small damage on it)
bars are in very good structure condition, a little surface rust which coudl easily be sorted at the lever clamp arean and stem clamp area, origianl paint has some chips/scrapes etc from use, but are excellet for survivor i think :)[attachment=1][attachment=2][attachment=3][attachment=4][attachment=5]

Those decals look pretty good considering they were produced from photos. There's definitely a few details missing though, like the small stars and planets on the cross bar decal.
'stars planets have you got a detailed image not seen those and cant see them on the og bars in this thread
-
Wow I still totally want some space bars. They were my main bars all through the peak 80s! Mean so much to me. If anyone selling def pm me purrrrrlease!
-
Also I found my old Space baseball cap in the loft the other day! I'll get a pic of it up just gotta suss Photobucket!
