a perfect pool, halfpipe from the seventies era.
-
I rode it bitd when Glynn used to rip it up big time, not sure if its still there?
-
I skated it a couple of times but that don't really count as it wasn't on a bike :LolLolLolLol:
-
Yep . . . I was there . . . loved the blue bowl and the snakes head . . . saw Glynn grabbin' big air many times
B@stard council filled it in donks ago . . . :2gunsfiring_v1:
Steve
-
whatever ever happened to glyn :) ?
-
That's another topic Graeme and it's been discussed several times already on this forum
Allegedly, he's in the slammer for being a very silly man. To date, it's simply an unconfirmed rumour so I'm keeping quiet :-X
Steve
-
anyone know whats happened 2 any of the locals- mike watts, andy, john tugwell, james mulby, hoad etc
-
I went down there once and met the locals when I was with Team Taylor, in fact a few of us went down there on the Saturday then met up with them the next day at Rom, 81 or 82 I think :daumenhoch:
-
I rode there quite a lot with Glyn when i was over at his house.... Nice place, proper little mini-rom :)
-
Gillingham was the first skatepark I ever rode in. But as usual my timing was brilliant. I went to it for the first time one Saturday and loved it. But the next Saturday I went down there and it had been filled in. :'( At least I could say I rode it once, although it being my first and only time there, didn't do anything of any significance. Looking back, it wasn't as far away as it seemed when I was 12 or 13. Would be ideal for me now.
-
has anyone got any photo's of the place?

has anyone got any photo's of the place?
I had loads of old school photos of me and my mates at Gillingham . . . they vanished during a ruthless house clearance soon after my folks split in the early 90's. I am so fookin' gutted as too many memories and pics of all my old bikes have gone for good . . . would love to see some others if anyone has any
Steve

Got this one :

-
Glynn was awesome but what a helmet ;D
-
yer see him riding there many times, owned the place.
-
Yeah, Glynn could really climb out of the blue bowl and man was that deep
Great pic that Bill . . . cheers for posting that one :daumenhoch:
Steve
-
yer thanks bill,a good 9 feet. that pool was simalar 2 rom's one but not over vert & more rideable.
-
Got this one :
glyn was sent to jail because of wearing horrendous helmets
billy got off lightly with a suspended sentence ;)
-
I used a Bell Magmum, what could be wrong with a Bell crash helmet ?
I never really rated Glyn as he never used a coaster brake whilst all the other freestylers did, but that air out of the blue bowl is exceptional :daumenhoch:
-
Anyone remember the old boy who used to get down there - Bob? Bit of a dodgepot if i remember.
Unfortunately it's now a car park. :'(
Glynn defo ruled the place but was a bit of an arrogant tw@t with it.IMO
Other names - Dean & Doug Hyatt,Mark & Paul Knight(matching Ripper's)Piers Mathieson to name a few.
-
i've heard that under the grass of the car park the bowls r still intact apart from a chunk from the bottom dug out 4 draining.
-

Fiola used a freewheel

Oh, so Eddies your mate now then Andy >:D
-
I was just saying thats all :2funny: :2funny: ok Tinker used a freewheel then ;D
-
Glyn was good at what he did, but there`s only so much bouncing around on your bike that you can do :crazy2:
-
He once told me he copied your style. :LolLolLolLol:
-
When we were on the Kellogs Glyn slagged me off a bit to some others, but they came and told me, so I poped over to him and did a bit of slagging myself :daumenhoch:
-
Glyn was a bit odd so I had nothing to do with him at all. He was just weird (no footed front hops) why would you want to do that :2funny:
-
Hi y'all, I rode gillingham from around 1980 to its closure in 87 and remember Gary (H)ales, 1st Redline 'Proline) Darren gilchrist (Diamond Back) and yes even the Knight brothers, two P.K.'s red and blue, I never thought i would meet someone who remebered them, I'm sure they lived near Buckmore Park, Rochester. Who are you???????????????????I probably know you. I'm Simon I used to ride a red Torker and was about 12 when those two used to frequent-OLD SKOOL.
Yes Lewis was the best, he could air every single inch of Gillinghams perfect contours- even bowl to bowl transfers from snake to rez-how hard!!! Big air even for now. Have a pair of 1st Generation Profile cranks he gav eto me some years after- for resto project.
Went to Gillingham the other day and it is NOT a car park- its just a field with all bowls in tact with only damage to half pipe walls and lips of others. i know every inch of that place.
I Hope i dont offend anyone whan i say that Blacklion gillingham Skatepark was the best piece of concrete in UK ever, and made Rom and Harrow look like amateur polar bear enclosures. How many Parks had ultra smooth contours with not one, not one kink.
Please, Please, Please has anyone got photos????????? from all years both BMX and Skate??????????? email at avat19@dsl.pipex.com
-
Take your camera next time :daumenhoch:. Never seen any good pics of that place.
-
Hi can fix that...........if only somone can tell me how to compress already compressed photos down from 850kb to max.allowed 128kb??????????????
P.S. note in the photo of Lewis getting 9ft+ , 3rd from left is a young Fids......Where are you fids??????? Its Si your old gillingham and glasgow housemate!!!!!!!
-
Pretty sure one of our pc nerds like Ruler can help you there. He aint a nerd in the skatepark though :daumenhoch:.
-
Cheers, just cut n paste to see size of pics of others and they turn out to be bigger that 128???? As it says 128 x 4 pics can i post one that in total = 500kg.........ah well here goes!!!!!!
No got refused..... Help!!!!! got some good pics.
-
No i didn`t
-
Email them to me and I will post them for you.
-
i think fids lives & works in hastings,if u go 2 the backyard jam in sheffield u should bump into him. hope u have some luck with these pics. i think cause alot of towns r getting these crappy little metel parks built gillingham council should dig out & reconstruct the old one, maybe they might show some interest what with this extreme sport boom.
-
Have managed to sort out the pics, but the site wont allow me to post as 'upload folder is full' will try again on monday.... :'(
-
You'll need to use something like photobucket or imageshack.
-
Here are gill.b's pics.

Awesome pics well worth the wait. :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:
-
Ace . . . awesome memories flooded back seeing pics of that place again . . . :daumenhoch:
Right, where's me shovel !!!
Steve
-
is it still there?
-
Filled in way back :'(
-
Lets get diggin then :daumenhoch:
-
I'll bring the beers . . . who can get their hands on a JCB ;D
Steve
-
is it really still there or have they built on it? If I lived there I would be diggin tonight.
-
You can hire a JCB with an operator for about £ 275 a day, and he`d make short work of digging that out in a day :daumenhoch:
-
reminds me of Del Mar skate ranch
-
is it really still there or have they built on it? If I lived there I would be diggin tonight
Apparently, it's just been filled in and you can still see the half pipe walls . . . Can anyone confirm ??
£275 with an operator is cheap Bill . . . that way we can all sit back and drink the beer ;D
Steve
-
word is its just been filled in (apart from the half pipe walls) all it'll take is one day with a jcb all the land's used for at mo is a extention of the park/car park area.i think we should all chip in and dig.
-
It could be arranged if you really wanted to do it :daumenhoch:
-
I'm gonna head over there this week to see what it looks like now. There must be someone who could give the nod to clear it
How cool would it be to get the park back again . . . ;)
Steve
-
I went there about a month ago........half pipe walls were knocked down in 87 with the rest. However have some video footage of that very black day and most of the lips are still intact, and yes it is used as an overspill carpark..but could still be dug up repaired etc. Before an hiring the JCB (i would make contribution) it might be best to approach blacklion smimming pool and/or the council.(Where is Nigel Martin???? he took the vid along with gill day vid and has tones of pics, he moved up to manchesteer near goshen years ago and must be on the is still on the bmx/skate scene) he was always 110% committed. By the way he was the one who ran 'No softies' back in the day. Simon.
-
it would b well worth it if we could dig out that place, such a good park,i don't see why the council would'nt agree i don't think they've got a place for the kids 2 ride/skate nearby,it is,nt exactly used 4 much.
-
I've never understood why they filled it in the 1st place . . . especially for a car park that hardly gets used >:(
Steve
-
apprently there was some old git that lived over the road that did'nt like the noise of people enjoying them selves and kept on complaning 2 the council.
-
the guys name was councillor J.Jennings ......and he moved out immedietly afterwards.........aaaaarrrggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
Have posted a pic to meddle in order to entice the 'shovels' out!!!!!!!!! kind of 'meddlE' to help out as even with miniature file size an 'upload limit' message comes up. Why????Will keep on tryin'.Simon.
-
Have a read of this Simon it should help you out :daumenhoch:

J. Jennings can rot in hell !!!
My shovel and pick axe are poised ready . . . just need to contact the right people now . . . :daumenhoch:
Keep the pics coming Simon and thanks for helping out Meddle
Steve
-
im ready when u r , im gonna give which ever council covers giilingham a call in the next coupla days c what they say.
-
Thanx to for the patience (Billstup & meddlE & co)........have now made a photobucket account........heres another pic.constuction shots of making halfpipe walls!!!!!!(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/k39/rezy_01/Gill.jpg)
-
Great picture Simon . . . reading the text it looks like the Blacklion Sports Complex are the rightful owners and I wouldn't expect they've sold it if they still use it when their main car park gets chokka
Trill . . . I'm gonna make some enquiries too and this could be a new beginning for the park . . . :)
Steve
-
if you need helping voice...........it would be an honour........for all those that will sale on her! I fear the blacklion will need reassuraces about past behaviour of certain 'elements' and of course insurance issues. research how new parks deal with it might be a good idea before approaching???????
-
good work, hope we can revamp it, would love 2 ride that place again.
-
Insurance and liability cover these days could be the main reason why reopening has never been reconsidered . . . defo worth making some serious enquiries before approaching the Blacklion . . . armed with all the ammunition we need
Perhaps another member can advise about current rules and regs with skate parks :)
Steve
-
i spoke 2 twobobrob about it on sunday he rekons we should'nt mention wanting money they might lose interest and cause we r all adults lol we could say we r doing it 4 the youth of gillinham as well.
-
Sounds as if we got ourselves a serious posse of responsible adults...........thats want they want to hear. as you say ammunition!
-
They dug Harrow out so you could show them it has worked already. We could have a rad meet when its done. :daumenhoch:
-
count me in for any help needed. gillingham was the first skatepark i ever rode in (only the once) and it was filled in within a week of me riding it.
-
there's a few other skaters and riders, Pete Flury, Toby christian, nigel Martin and Jason Creevey that would sell their own limbs to particpate and ride/skate gillingham again..........I dont how to contact them (apart from toby who i skated with recently). Here's another pic to be gettin on with!! notethe amount of earth from the half pipe, pool and skakerun in the background!!! the Rez earth ....we all used to sit on, to the right.

Cool thread – it's also been covered on the middle-age-shred website. Rumour has it that the bottom everything was jackhammered before in-fill for drainage reasons. A couple of old school skaters confirmed this as they watched 'em drill it all up. They said it was beyond repair, but that may have been the opinion of a 14 year old some 20 odd years ago. Someone has subsequently found an ariel pic (from Google I think), and the evidence of a park can still clearly be seen.
The reason the P bowl at Harrow was left alone was apparently because the vert wall was pushed over into the bowl before it was filled in. When they did this, the rebar popped out of the bowl and f'in destroyed it.
All that said, if you can get the green light for a time team dig, lmk – I've got a pickaxe... let's make the pool live again. They dug the love bowl (in CA) out & fixed it – maybe we should call Tony Robinson.
btw - thank fek John Rom signed another lease - we coulda lost another one.
-
I knew (and was one of) the old skaters in gillingham - nigel, Jay,Pete,Fids, toby, glen,Carter & Frenchy etc. docker and billy (who wer e not there) so i dont know who these people could be...........so sad of true. simon.
-
P.S. I can still remeber going there a few years after and the shapes o f the bowls had longer grass compared to the 'inbetweens'...... this could mean that if the bottoms were broken ...it was not enough????????
-
Okay, here is the Google Earth shot of BlackLion now, whereabouts was the skate park?
-
Oh dear where do you start digging?
-
i know exactly where it is.............
-
Can you believe that they filled it in?
-
i have just visited middle-age-shred.com (http://middle-age-shred.com) and have downloaded a pic of some of the tiles that 'Harvey 73' collected. Who is Harvey 73...........the only person I can think of is Rodga but i dont know how he could come by such a thing???????
I remember skating the rez through a narrow channel with piles of dirt either side......flat bottom intact. the pool was rad, but the rez was the best bowl ever madde in England. Forever carving counterclockwise....stuff of legends. It would be worth it if only for the rez. simon.
P.S. will post 'bluetile' pic later.
-
if a few people interested turn up at rom on sunday we can discuss things then .hopefully one of us would've spoken 2 someone at gillingham council by then and we'd know a bit more
-
Can you believe that they filled it in?
I've not seen pics of this place in years and I'll never understand why. To use the land for a good cause maybe . . . but for a poxy lawn / temp car park . . . >:(
Steve
-
Always the way :-\ Especially when a official bodies have the knives out for something. These guys have the connections to pour cold water on almost anything. If individuals were to approach the Black Lion people in view to breathing new life into the old girl, it might be an idea to hook up with the peeps who sorted the regeneration of Harrow out to get some pointers on how best to approach the right folk. I know certain parts of Harrow still existed, thus maybe making their task a little easier, but the stubborness of council types cannot be underestimated. They like stuff done a certain way... ::)
-
btw - I'm sure one of the rom lads said he saw Rodga Harvey @ Hayle last weekend... I'll ask. As fer a chat @ Rom, I'm up for that. We owe it to our selves and 'tha kidz' to ressurect the old school! The more pools the better :)
-
by the sounds of it there many riders/skaters that r v.interested in getting her back 2 former glory. theres a coupla old school skaters round my area who r working with another council over a seperate skatepark project who would love 2 be involved as they used 2 skate it often.
-
If it`s going to be done then some new school type ramps will be required too :daumenhoch:
-
Here's how to get the park dug up for free. ( nearly). Buy an old victorian medal or something from Ebay. Take it to Gillingham Museum and say you found it while looking for worms right at the skatepark area.
Before you know it, there'll be 15 school teacher/arty archiologist types round there with their beards, cardigans and trowels, digging up the place looking for relics. When they find one of Glyyn Lewis's mushroom grips, they can claim it was dinner for a prehistoric monster with one huge leg and fangs who used to roam around that area frightening all the kids... Quite accurate really :LolLolLolLol:
-
yer, a couple of quarters, wallride, spine etc.. theres a bit of room 2 the left of were the pool is.
-
ok who mentioned lewis..........blue skies, perfect x-up...........classic gillingham.......keep the spirits up.Simon

Awesome pic . . . keep 'em coming Simon :daumenhoch:
Steve
-
Glyn was the baddest and Raddest to ever ride Gillingham, its such a pitty he's not involved in riding anymore, pure smoothness on ramps
-
cool pic,proper 80's bowl ridin.
-
I loved riding the place during the summer holidays back in the day. We used get the train from Swanley and stay all day. I be up for gettin the place up and runnin again :daumenhoch:
-
If you're all serious about this I may be able to offer some advice. Are there any other facilities in the immediate area?
-
I'm still serious . . . let's get this place open again and if it fails . . . at least we tried :daumenhoch:
There's a leisure complex nearby, playing field with football pitches . . . local residents too which were a problem in the 1st place
Steve
-
Sorry fella, bad communication by me..... i meant any skatepark/ramp facilities nearby...... oops....
As for neighbours, When was the place backfilled? I'll bet it was a while ago. I'll also bet that the reason was probably a health and safety one. Both are issues that can be dealt with :-)
-
To my knowledge no other skateparks or ramps are in the immediate area
Not sure when it was back filled and I'm pretty sure a local resident kicked up about noise pollution which prompted closure :idiot2:
Steve
-
Your nearest skateparks are Gravesend, Rom, Sittingbourne and Maidstone. Not aware of anything closer, maybe a current local rider knows better?
-
if there's nothink close that should work in our favour. apprantly the guy that runs revoloution park in broadstairs was interested in diggin it up not 2 long ago i'll give him a call see what he has 2 say.
-
Should add that the nearest free parks are Maidstone and Gravesend, Sittingbourne and the legend that is Rom are both privately run.
-
so what about the council. They must have a say in this. I guess you'll need to speak to the guy in charge of parks and leisure or something. tell him that they really need a facility for bikes, boards and in line skaters. Frighten him by tell him the cost of building a proper concrete park, and then explain how it can all be done is a fraction of the cost, and they have a great park already. He'll look good that he's done his job in providing facilities. The Show him the interest ( a petition from rad memebers would be a good start). Get them councillors on your side, and it'll be easy. If they're not on your side, they'll be a right pain in the hole.
Where's our fav councillor Eileen Mckerrow when you need her?
Hopefuly all the neighbours that complained in the 80's are either dead, moved or now hard of hearing
-
the main twat ( mr jennings) who got it closed in the first place apparantly moved out not long after in shut in '87.
-
i've been past the old skatepark site a few times recently...not too much diggin takin place yet!
i used to ride that place daily with hoad, fids, mike watts and dave lundgren (RIP)
i remember standin in the bottom of the half pipe with hoad, jan eric and ozone while they filled it with earth and knocked the walls in
-
its a blast from the past i used to ride down there all the time and yes im jay hoad . used to ride with andy, fids, mick, glen wish i could turn back time
-
btw im the one in the 34 NFL top great days and ;D
-
hoad, fids and mike watts are all located
i hear that si hatcher and toby are still skating and have been in contact with mike
ado is a pirate on sheppey
anyone else out there?
-
Right listen up...councils found it easy to fill in skateparks because from a Health and Safety perspective they were a large whole in the ground that any twat could fall into, believe me you will have to have this angle covered before they will take you seriously, however that will be a positive point and will show its not just on a whim, always try and get a local councillor involved even though it was them that shut it in first place you will need someone inside,if you have to kiss someones arse so be it,it`s only for a short while.
They will also want a commitee type group to run the place and report to them, they love all this shit, the point i`m making is that there are hoops you have to jump through to get to where you want but it`s worth it,incidentally is there a local election coming up that is a massive advantage and flog it to death, key points are ..local community, health and safety, and future generations........hope this helps..(BTW dont be surprised if they say they cant re-open an old park because it will have involved a change of use from recreation to dormant land-fill,they will put up obstacles but thats what there paid to do,don`t let it put you off)....... :daumenhoch:
-
Got this one :

-
Hi guys. I rode Gillingham from 82 to 84 with all my mates from Sheppey. We'd go up on the train of a Saturday and stay all day bar trips to Jeff Wyles bike shop - where Glynn worked - and Buckmore Park. We always wanted to get to Rom and I've still never been but Gillingham was heaven for us. Glynn was always a bit arrogant but we didn't mind to be honest. We were so much younger and were so impressed with his riding. One day, I saw him 360 out of the Blue Bowl that has been pictured earlier in this thread. The guy was the best I ever saw. I made a point of going back there a few years back to check out how kids were riding and saw that it'd be filled in. Absolutely senseless. They're building shite ramps all over the place these days but they bear no comparison to the Black Lion.
I seem to remember that insurance was always an issue. The old boy Bob was a character. I remember one lad - nicknamed Lumo as I recall - jumping out of the Rese and over his car. Class. It really was a great place.
We spent many happy hours there and it's a crying shame the current generation of skaters, boarders and bmxers have been robbed of the right to ride this place. I went on to work as a journalist and at one stage worked on the local newspaper for the Medway Towns. I can tell you that photographic dept would be teeming with pics - especially of Glyn. I'm up for helping out in any way I can. I could certainly call a few old colleagues at the paper to enlist their support.
Anyway. Thanks for this thread. Brought back loads of happy memories.
Cheers, JB
:) :)
-
yeah i remember lumo, creeeeeeevvy and all the crew...dave lundgren used to be good there too...i remember him getting 5 or 6ft airs out of the snake's head when no one else could ride under vert transitions...i still miss that dude
pot noodles from the shop next to no softies too
be fun to tear down the half pipe again shouting following hoad, following fids, following si...following red grifter...haha
nigel in his moto 4 and oakley braces was the face of gillingham too...he did everything he could to keep that place running...true legend
-
sounds like you boys need a trip to rom on a sunday a.m with us old fecks
Dave

Hi,
My name is marcel,
ANYONE REMEMBER ME! (skinny black guy, used to ride a mongoose california, red skyways, rode with mark williams, dan hopkins, mike watts, jason hoad, nigel martin, did huge footplants and nose wheelies (manuals to new riders!), I used to ride gillingham from 84 to is close, It rocked!
A lot of peolpe hated it because all the bowls were very tight, you could fit all 4 of them into the rez at rom! BUT if you leaned the lines it was fab.
Whats this about a reunion at rom for the old gillingham group? PS that picture og glyn doing 9ft air, anyone recognise hoad in the 34 t shirt.
Who's on here that I know?
Marcel
-
hi marcel, its mick watts again!
-
hi marcell i remember you at gill , you also used to ride our warehouse in canterbury with mike watts
-
hi all yeah a rom day will be good hi to all its me jason hoad and rory get those pics up of me and mike mate

Mike nice pics - Never rode Gillingham but it always looked killer, the pool looked like Rom's pool but not as much overhang, little bit more manageble to get air's. I always loved the look of an air in a pool with tiles and pool coping, made the air look that much radder.
-
cheers, was the best thing ive ever ridden. nothing compares , roms too over vert.

hi, I used to ride the black lion around '84 to '87-I used to travel by train from snodland with andy wilson, chris farell, dingley(??) and steve from larkfield. I enjoyed getting RAFF out of bed to open "no softies" and the climb over the fence/digging out the gravel etc
I bought my streetbeat from raff (after jase hoad sold it to him in order to get his shiny chrome skyway) and my skyway was stolen twice in 1988 and i didnt get it back the second time. i bought my first bike in 20 years last saturday a pk ripper in black/gold.
i remember hoad, marcel but im sure i would remember all the others if i had fotos (soz i dont have any!)
good times, good park
:)
what happened to gillingham skatepark.com?? no way of getting in touch now...argh!
best wishes
ash

Wow, just read all 13 pages of that!
Used to travel from Glasgow to visit G.L. and his mum ('Alright 'aggis?!') and ride the park - great place and I'm recognising a lot of names. I'd have been there in '86 I think, remember Hoads name, I'm sure I used to ride with him and Glynn when I came down.
As for the girls.......I think I remember them too.... :LolLolLolLol:
Talk about resurrecting a thread from the dead - this one's 2 years old!

i know glynn was at koc in 1991. saw him rolling about on a bike but not really riding. heard he was a bailiff. and sure he and eric steels bro had a bit of fisticuffs that weekend - that was the word going round.

He was ridin' and havin' fun in the res, Eric (not Scott) started slaggin' him off about his 'Hoof' or some such nonsense (about his polio..) at the steps on the seafront and Glyn called him out on it. What happened next is anyones guess....
I would doubt a positive outcome for the Steel clan though...

Just got through reading all the posts, great memories. My name is Steve I grew up in Chatham and Maidstone and watched them building Gillingham Skate Park. I used to skate there in the 70s and 80s with my mates John and Clive. Took a trip out to the States to see Billy Smith just found him again on Myspace. I have some photos including a good shot of Carter's Posse. When I've worked out how to scan them in, I'll upload them!

We need to get Glynn Lewis on RAD, Wheres he at?
-
i rode black lion skate park from 85 - 87...
i used to have a pink dp freestyler that i bought from raf's, it changed colours many times after the paint started wearing thin
i used to do alot of ground tricks rather than bowl work but my main thing was hooking up in the blue bowl and surviving!!!!
i used to ride with marcel (who i went to school with), moose, mark (with a bronze special edition dp freestyler), paul who rode roller skates and in line skates (he stopped going when he landed on his face in the blue bowl), a ginger kid on a green dp and others that i cant remember
there were two guys from hoo, me and mark rode over there from walderslade to use their quarter pipe from bmx beat or something. that was the first time i did a no handed cherrypicker in public :)
i stopped going regularly after i broke my foot and destroyed my knee after one to many dices with death on the lip on the blue bowl (damn that thing was evil)

I used to ride there most summers... I used to stay with Moose (Mark Bruce) or Glyn Lewis's mum. I used to love that place I will definately ride there again if the dig it up.
