I decided after reading many comments on here to start a good old build thread, as many people including myself appear to miss them!
I started gathering parts for this just before Christmas, I was going to build a gen2 Master as I got a frameset fairly cheap but decided against the idea for various reasons....mainly the choice of 84 parts...there aren't many options and inevitably most of them end up looking the same! :-\
I decided I wanted a Sport, as I am going to be riding this one and the longer TT would be handy. I have always loved the look of Ron Wilkerson's blue bike...I love the combo of blue and turquoise and having drooled over a couple of builds on the museum a decision was made to build that bike!
The frameset is a bit difficult to get right as Ron rode a 86 frame with 85 forks, or at least a late 85 frame painted as a 86. In order to get the right look I went with a chrome 85 frame which will be off to SBD to be powdered over as soon as I receive the bars.( which Parcel Force are still trying to find!)
There will be a couple of deviations from Ron's original spec such as I will be using gen 1 Peregrine Masters with a freewheel as opposed to gen 2's with a freecoaster as Ron rode...and I will be using turquoise A'me Tri instead of the grey/black unitrons Ron used as quite simply I think they will look better....
Here is a pic of the frameset which I received today and the parts which I have at the moment....

I have the correct dk stem and Viscount Dyna seat on their way to me as well as these babies....

The only hard to find part I need now is another pair of white Haro tyres ::)
Here is a pic of Ron getting rad.....

Not too many on these shores but a few in the states. there are 3 built like this on the museum, and a few more with different coloured wheels. I don't think anyone has done this one here yet....
Hmmm...the Kellogg's bike, now there is an idea....could work out expensive, I think he had 401's on that one! :-\
-
Looking forward to this :daumenhoch:

Nice project :daumenhoch:

These arrived today! Both in need of a little resto work but will give me something to do while I wait for the frame....

Never seen a white one before... really nice that Damo. :daumenhoch:

Will be keeping an eye on this Damo. Always loved those teal mags. Shaping up to be a cracking build :daumenhoch:
Superior faith in that stem to be doing a handstand on the bars :D
-
I just realised I fooked up on the headset lock, the one I have is not correct. A suitable replacement has been found....it's bloody hard looking at grainy 80's pics! ::)

Nice project. Wheels are super cool. :)

:LolLolLolLol: :wtf: did you put the return address on the back?!
It started when I got a delivery of something very large , flat and very cardboard...which I knew couldn't be for me as I hadn't ordered anything which looked remotely like that, which is what I told the driver..but it had my address on it!
Upon opening it turned out to be a point of sale display stand for....Galaxy easter eggs!
I rang Parcel Force who sent the driver back an hour or so later to collect it upon which he found my address label had been stuck OVER the correct one! O.k I was thinking...so where is the parcel which should have had my label on it?? ( at the time I didn't know it was the bars, as I had a few bits on order)
That was 4 weeks ago and a nice woman at Parcel Force has managed to track the parcel to Reading (I am in Watford) and the last I heard another nice parcel force man called Sanjay was looking for it in a warehouse with 10.000 other parcels...that was a week ago. Tbh I think they have lost the fookers! ::)

Yeah was partly my fault... my address was partially exposed on the side of the box. :idiot2: But isn't that why they have these barcode readers to avoid these sort of mistakes. ???
Tbh never had any issues in the past with Parcelforce... so i guess I've gotta take a little responsibility. :)

Got the confirmation I was expecting this morning....Parcel force have lost the bars! A large compo claim will be filed soon.... ::) >:( :( :knuppel2: :tickedoff:

I always thought it was strange Ron rode a different brake pad combo, Tuff pads on rear and DC up front . I thought both were pretty rubbish with mags :-\

Missed all this so far Damo
Gonna look ace when your finished, shame about those fookin bars , least you can look at them wheels to cheer yourself up "wantit"

Apart from the bars which I am trying to score at the moment, I got the last 2 bits needed today. The correct(ish) Dk headlock and a pair of Haro pegs....If you look carefully at the pics you can see Ron ran one blue Haro peg on the front left so tonight Matthew...I will be mostly sanding and having my first play with plastikote blue glass spray....which on an initial tickle looks great! results to follow...
Here is the headlock, it is the 1.5" version so I have sent it home with my mate who is going to get his dad to turn it down a bit on his lathe to get it to look a bit more like a 1" version.

Pegs, one of which I had a quick flick of the glass spray..

loving the details on this one!
-
I initially painted one peg but made the mistake of using primer. The second time round I thought would try a different approach and polished the peg beforehand...then painted the blue glass straight on and fook me what a difference, it looks like anno! laqeured it afterwards....

I scored some bars on ebay today so this will be back on track soon, as long as Parcel Force don't lose them !
Off to see SBD with any luck next week :)
-
I'm liking this build very much :daumenhoch:
-
After much debate, I decided to paint the crank black today as it is clear that Ron was running one on this bike. I prefer the look of a chrome one tbh but for the purpose decided it had to be black......

In preparation for powder I dulled all the chrome which is to be covered with a red scotch pad so that the powder will adhere slightly better. There is a bit of old powder in the head tube which suggests this frame was originally blue to begin with...

STOKED! I already had a generic layback post for this build which I was going to put a Space decal on but I actually managed to score a genuine Space post . A big thanks to dennyking for parting with it. In the pic is the generic post on the right and the Space post on the left. The Space post needs a rechrome so is going off to my mate asap. In the meantime I am going to chop the one I have to the same length as the Space one......

I got the seat finished after days and days of sanding and polishing on and off. I decided to buy some proper plastic polish for this task rather than the normal method of T cut which I use. Did it work? well...yes but after a fook load of work. Was it better than T cut? again a bit hard to tell as this type of plastic is hard to polish and they both need some elbow grease. the polish is made by Novus in case anyone is interested and comes in a 3 stage kit. A MASSIVE thanks goes out to Retrodan72 for sorting me out the guts for this :4_17_5: :radbmxsmilie:. The results....

I was going to use some turquoise A'me Tri on this build but then found some Unitrons in the same colour which are ideal as these are what Ron was running on the bike....I just didn't like the grey/black ones he had on there. The ends needed tidying up a bit but came out great....

I wasn't happy with the finish on the crank and also realised that crank had a slight bend, So a mint crank has been sent to Mark at Impreziv finishing to have the arms black/chromed...as soon as that is back this bike should be finally built....

Thanks for the encouragement lads...no one is more impatient than me and this is taking far too long for my liking!! I put her out in the sun today as I wanted to get an idea of how the wheels/tyres were going to look as tbh it all looks a bit weird and mismatched indoors! it comes into it's own in the sunshine! :smitten:

I thought the crank would arrive today but it appears not! hopefully tomorrow. A fella known only as 'Wet look Gel' ??? is painting my bars and he assures me they will be back Saturday so with any luck this will get built fully over the weekend. Still a couple of last minute things to do like de-anno my brake levers and buy some inner tubes which somehow I keep forgetting! :idiot2:

Looking good cant wait to see it finished.

Only just stumbled upon this thread, looks fantastic and great attention to detail, can't wait to see the finished article.....

Found this vid of Ron riding this bike in 1985, so glad I went for an 85 frame and cables etc. It is strange how he had certain parts which were later on the bike such as the uni-directional chainring and the black Fu-Pa crank off the later 87 Master (I can only presume this)...and how his frame is painted like the 86's in 85. He was probably being used as a test bed for the later parts and look I would imagine.....

Fantastic. There's one aerial, about 1:42 in, that looks so flipping high!
Shame the video ended just as RL came on. could have had some RL20ii action!!

I reckon it's about right...even down to the unclipped cable tie on the top tube! Just glad it's finally done as it was dragging on a bit for my liking. Hope everyone likes as much as I do! :smitten:

Wow! My fave build in quite some time. Lush Damo :4_17_5:
-
Really nice. it's been great following the build thread too. :daumenhoch:
For someone like me with little time or money to participate in the building/collecting side of the hobby, reading these sorts of threads is the nearest I get.
Get on the next one Damo. ;D

:LolLolLolLol: cheers Joe... I have the time, but not the money...or space! I am fooking skint mate, I just like my builds to be right! I try and keep my overheads low so I can have more fun...not having a missus helps! This will be the last one I build for a good while, I have other non bmx related stuff I need to get on with now as drifting season is approaching fast! :daumenhoch:
-
The most anticipated build of the year so far Damo, but well worth the wait, it's making me want to do a freestyler again.
Top build mate. :4_17_5:

Thankyou everyone else for your kind words, it means a lot. I was ready to give up on it at a couple of points but I felt I would not only be letting myself down but everyone else on here too, as I was getting so much positive inspiration.... :radbmxsmilie:
I swapped the seatclamp today for a raw one as I bought a chrome one by mistake thinking it was just polished...I just need to get some proper pics in the sunshine as that is how I first saw the builds on the museum and fell in love with the way they looked...the wheels completely change colour and the whole thing REALLY pops! just need some sunshine! ::)

Thanks Gary, really glad you like it...I tried to get it as right as I could! thankyou everyone else who has commented. I still really want to get some sunshine shots at a particular location...hopefully tomorrow if it sunny.
I was working at the Big Bang show at Santa Pod last weekend building a ramp for the Cool Flo boys so I thought I would bring her out for some fresh air and added to the line up along with Torker Mick and Master Daves lovely bikes....

I love it up at the pod too...used to go watch the drags with my dad as a kid. I have done the quarter mile a few times and i go drifting there also. As far as i know the Cool Flo guys will have a similar setup at Bug Jam this year....might be worth a trip! :daumenhoch:

STOKED! I just found this image which proves Ron was running an Anlun power disc. I was doubtful as 2 of the US builds are using a Pro Neck but upon discussion with the builder of the other one we came to the mutual conclusion that it would have been most logical he was using an Anlun one so I went with that. That's one little niggle that I had gone! As it is half guesswork sometimes building a rep it's nice to know you made the right decision! This pic must of been taken not long after the bike was built as the crank still looks fresh, in most of the other pics the crank has rubbed through to chrome... Looks like Fiola looking on in awe in the background! :D

Another image I never found before...the famous Blyther/Wilkerson double air! I wish I could make out the decal he had on the underneath of the down tube!! Anyone got any ideas?

Nice one Dene,

Thanks again for that post, it's the icing on the cake! :daumenhoch:

Quality build and some great pics sourced too; me likey :)

That's lovely, top job!

I just got told a very interesting story about the whereabouts of the original bike!! Apparently it was launched of a ramp into the water in San Diego bay whilst filming a video. The lifejacket which it had attached came off and the bike sunk!! Is anyone any good at diving??!! :-\
I wonder what kind of state it would be in if it could be found?!

Great story mate ... I love it when you get really immersed in a build .. It's only then that you find such cool things out! :4_17_5:
