From the October 1984 issue of BMX Action Bike. Some pics of the Streetbeat prototype included. I've added the cover which needed a bit of retouching. :)

Hey, what's up guys? I have to say, going to Europe in '84 was a huge thing for me. We were already blown away seeing how into it people were over there but when we got to the UK it was just nuts. What a cool scene. You guys were lucky to have all that going on over there. Great riders too.
I mean for me personally, I had barely been more than like 50 miles away from home and all of the sudden we're going over there. After that trip I had been to more countries than states in the US. I've been back a couple times on my own power and loved it but what I really want to do is get over there with a bike and hit some of those spots like ROM, Southsea and SouthBank. One of my biggest bummers riding was not getting to go back in '85. Worked my ass off and got a 2nd and 3rd in Expert class edging Peterson out both times thinking if I could put myself up as the main flatlander on the Skyway US team I'd be going to Europe. It was a bummer because it was actually the contest where I did best that I heard that they already booked the tickets and I wasn't going. Man, I was chapped about that one since there was no way I could afford to go on my own.
Yeah, that Street Beat prototype is like a Holy Grail of mine and I don't even really collect. There is a chance it's out there somewhere since Dave's parents just let people take his bikes and stuff. One of his Boss frames, a helmet and number plate turned up so you never know.
I'm building up the TA in those pictures. Still have a few of the parts too. The frame got pretty rusty in a shed but it's getting done up by Rod Miles the master of metal and I have nearly all the parts for it. Have a jersey and a signed '84 tour banner to go with it and have already started prepping the wifey for it going in the house. I'd really like to get a Vander and Peterson jersey too.
Yeah, Bill there are things about that trip that I don't remember either. It's funny how that goes. It was kind of a whirlwind thing though. That Peter Hawkins kept us busy! Ha. Yeah, if anyone sees him tell him Hi for me.
Well, I had been meaning to check with you Bill about advertising the shirts here but I've been lagging and I guess it's out of the bag. If it's OK with you, I can do the same deal as with VBMX and put a dollar into the site for everyone sold through here.
Man, I would love to see any photos from that trip!
-
sounds cool, i already ordered my shirt through your site :)
i'll post some photos, when i get a spare few minutes

From the left you have Rob Peterson, Craig Campbell showing someone why he`s not riding ( bad wrist ), me taking off the crash helmet, Paul (rocky) Hudson talking to Maurice Meyer. Dave Vanderspec must be doing his bit of demo when that was taken :daumenhoch:

Ive always wondered what sort of brakes they were in those photos?? Are they just plastic covers over ordinary levers? Some fantastic pictures here! Well impressed! :4_17_5:
-
Nice shots! Thanks for scanning those. I'll point Hugo, Eddie and Scotty over here. So, is that shot of Hugo an alley-opp? Yeah, those were dia-compe levers with the lever sleeves and the black rubber covers from a motorcycle. It was the in thing for a while in GG park along with those CW bars for freestyle. Needless to say, I wasn't doing any bar hops back then.
Neil was a ripper. I wish I had got to see him ride. It amazed me how much you guys ripped that bowl.
-
Loving that kuwie with the haro forks. With all the right bike/ right bits mentality these days it's nice to see a reminder that we rarely rode stock bikes as kids.
-
until they got sponsered they rode allsorts of bikes not sure of all types but thats how we all started i rode a raliegh mag burner with cw hbars all sorts of other bits with whitewalls back in 82 i thought it was the best bike around not as good as the dp firebird i got after it lol :daumenhoch:ill look for more pics(http://www.radbmx.co.uk/archive/albums/m279/zed2000/Freestylin_Summer_84_pg20-21.jpg)

Zed4130, funny you should mention the letters for those plates. I've been rebuilding that TA and went looking for some to do that white plate. They are stick on letters and I found them at one of the chain office supply stores here - OfficeMax of Office Depot. The brand name is "Headline" by "US Stamp and Sign". I could help you get some if you want.
Bob_Acid. Isn't that the truth? Every major part on my bike was used and the bikes just morphed as you replaced piece by piece.
Speaking of riding other bikes: here's a pre-Curb Dogs shot just after getting a co-sponsor from Kuwahara.

I`ll ask Carl Westfield for you Maurice, he might have some more pics too :daumenhoch:

Hi Maurice...!!.....Billy has just sent me a PM asking for more pictures. I'll look for some and post them for you. My best one of all you guys at Southsea is already shown (Craig with the damaged hand - hurt the day before)...but I'll look some out for you now. The picture you are asking about above of a "ramp to ramp" photographed by Bradley Tubbs...send an email to Simon Tiller at Southsea Skatepark website, tell him who you and want you want (Say Carl sent you !) and I'm sure he'll allow you any rights to the picture. I havn't had time to read this thread through yet. I'll post the pictures asap and then hang around for a chat !!...Carl Westfield (I've still got Paul Hudson's TA)....send me a PM with your email and I'll also send you loads of Skyway Team pictures from 84/85....OK they are not "kerb dogs" but still the same Skyway era.

maurice that would be great how much are they thanks for the help you guys influinced me so much in the 80's this means allot thanks :daumenhoch:
-
maurice do you still have those brake levers with the red covers and rubber hoods i noticed they were on your kuwi and later on your ta would love to see pics when done thanks :daumenhoch:
-
Carl, good idea. I'll just e-mail them. Can't wait to see those pix.
Zed4130, those letters are about $4.50 a set. They come in different sizes and colors. Maybe 2 or 3 fonts. That white Curb Dogs plate in the Action Bike articles has 2" black and 3/4" red ones. It's been costing about $8 to ship a 10oz shirt so you can figure from there. No problem getting them to you. I'm going to make a run over there soon for letters for another plate and I'm always going to the post office at lunch from work.
Yeah, I don't have the actual levers and covers from that bike but I've found the pieces. The levers are Dia Compe Tech III. The red sleeves are a BMX thing that come up on eBay here and there but Jason Eley hooked me up with those. Thanks again Jay! I found the black rubber covers were a Honda XR-70 thing and found a site that has originals and another with really good repros.
Just got some pretty amazing mid-resto pictures of the TA frame after the rust stripping but pre-chroming and I'm really psyched to get this thing done. I'll definitely post the photos up here.
-
wow the levers look great ill get back about letters as a freind in england says there are some over hear ill check that out if i get any problems ill get back to you thanks for all your help curb dogs rule :daumenhoch:
