Maybe I am just autistic, but I have often lay in bed at night wondering why mags generally have 5 spokes rather than 4, 6 or 7. Possibly for engineering strength? Maybe. However, I have a theory that it is all down to this........
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio#Geometry
i.e. they just look better. I reckon that is why almost all the mags you see are 5 spoke not 4 or 6.
So to prove my point, please vote in the poll above. If you had the choice between a pair of 5 spoke tuffs or a pair of 6 spoke tuffs, which would you choose? You can assume that they are of the same colour, strength etc........

Five Spoke
i would not touch Six Spoke Skyway's :(
-
6 spoke mags are for GT's
although i do have some very vintage 6 spoke ACS mx mags
(http://30cms.co.uk/temp/sc/acs1.jpg)
and they sure look great
i wouldnt mind a set of 6 spoke skyways though
for a particular bike i am building, that needs them

i need some six spokers to make the bike look exactly like it did in the advert :)
they better be cheap though. what with being plastic :)
-
mmm I traded some very mint cond Motomags for these. What the hell was I thinking.
I have put it all back to the way it was now.
Oh and what about 7 spokes??

You can apply the golden ratio to anyhing. I reckon it is also why some frames just look better than others - good looking bikes have frame geometries that fit the golden ratio.
I think Coastvl's pics illustrate the fact that 6 spoke mags just don't look as good as 5 spoke. And as for 7 spoke - blurgh!

You could use milk crates for wheels on that bike, and it would still look the tits :smitten:

that goose is so nice
6 spokes surely must be better than 5. a bit stiffer?
out of the mag wheels the motomag looks the best. followed by ogk's (peregrines)
-
Nope. No different in stiffness. They actually feel worse than 5 spokers.
I agree with Motomags lookin the best. Pity they weigh about 10 times the weight of tuffs. But i got them for a build anyway.

And then there are Lester
