Carlo  I'm 33, and i look at the picture below, and think how amazing this is. This is probably one of my all time fav shots for pure out and out raw height and aggro. If I were you, I'd put this on the wall of my own office and sign it myself. You must have been about 13 or 14 at the time. Bloody nuts. Great photo. Respect

Yep..i remember that as well.

Carlo always went high....but then just started to do 13 - 14 foot airs.....i think he must have been older than 13/14....

Carlo...were you not on Prolite at that age??

Best No handers and Turndowns in the business imo

i still wonder how you had the strength to do that can can reverse pedal picker.

Off the pic, to the left, somewhere near a kickturn ramp, I was stupidly looking somewhere else when this happened. The place seemed to go silent till Carlo landed I just heard 'Vrrrip..... gasps...." then a heavy, stem-bending re-entry.
Don't think I'll ever forget that, and the wait for the pics was agony! Do you have a larger version of this one?
If I remember rightly, this was filmed by someone or other. Was the footage ever broadcast?

I was 16 when that was taken... I remember nosing that fu.ker in .. My air at the other end of the hall with out pedaling was 9ft..  I also did a 5 by 5 540 5ft up and 5ft out to flat bottom... So i borrowe my team mates bike and finished that thing to... That week end i had 6 new frames from just pumping.... The plate behind the seatpost tube just was u shaped after maybe a run....

I remember skyway saying i must land hard.... I nosed them in i told them so i left a rode for someone else...

Both me and mat hoffman used to go through alot of bikes... I was at mats house and he used go through alot of graphite tuffs... I used to have at least 10 spare graphites here all the time.... I think i used to get through at least 30 frames a year... I think Haro was the worst though... I built up a new air master and did about 10 airs couple of 540s and did a 900 and the bike was unridable... The cranks you could not pedal the where low.. everything was bent... I dont land hard at all i want ride if i land low...

I called jim ford up who owns haro and he sent me a new bike and said the bike looks like it has been run overe with a bus... I wish i took picturs of that stuff... I remember only hanging up a bit of a wheel from a 14ft pump and the whole back chain stays came off and the only thing that was keep it from killing me was the chain...

Ive seen and rode some shitty bikes.. One was when i had had enough of shitty bikes so i got given a MDP made by VDC... I was doing a show in swizerland on the side of a mountain and this guy came up to me and said what did i think of the frame...i said its real strong... 5 airs later the headtube came off at like 12ft out on take off.... This is when you realise how strong a frame has to be when you are pumping...

I think the TA was strong PK Ripper to weak.. Craig campbell frame was strong exept the dropouts... T.A was the best frame very strong i rode on about 91 for 3 months and the only problem i had it was realy short....

I feel like im being interviewed but its cool to talk to everyone one here... And knowone is negative or is being a dick...

Craig used to ride with me alot and i had alot of new tricks that i learned a few months before those comps but i wanted to show him and he learned them for bmx beat also...  Thats not saying he is bad just i had new stuff and was more motivated than him at the time.... I think competing with neil burnt him out and he had lost his motivation to ride..

you were pretty tough on bikes then. I think the worst damage i ever did was give my rear inner tube a puncture. Remember when Mat Hoffman came to Carlisle and did a huge Granny air and hung the rear wheel up. His tuffwheel smashed to bits. It was really funny as Peter Hawkings ran out and grabbed the bike off him away from our eyes.  lol

This going to be quite long...

In 86 dennis mccoy came to stay at my house and i asked if i could go out to the states and ride with him... what a suprise.. i thought a rode alot... he rode 6 hours flatland and a hour or two on ramps... but what was crazy was he would sleep all day and get up 9 at night and ride till 6 in the morning... Kansas city is dangerous and i would suggest if dennis ever asked any of you to ride there be carefull.... Apart from being shot at and chased with wepons basebull bats police helicoptors and police horses i cant tell you what is was like for a 13 year old kid... When i came back and my mum and dad said so what was the trip like well if i wanted to go back to the u.s id better say it was o.k...

Evereyone was real nice to me then and all the riders where cool with each other... I went to florida with Rick moliterno and Dennis.. even the plane trip nearly endid with us getting well chucked out the plane.. But i remember dennis saying they cant throw us out becouse we are in the air...

I should write a book...

Going to me first AFA contest was scary... Blyther and all the other riders i wanted to see and i was nervous to talk to them... But after i rode blyther and other asked how i was so small and it looked funny me flying on a bike... The haro team where real nice to me even though i did not ride for them they paid for me to eat and gave me stuff alot...

One funny memory i have was I was standing in reception with Hugo gonzales and Eddie fiola walked in and he had this new bike case and hugo said.. Eddie you brought your guitar with you... I cant make it sound funny but Hugo was real cool

One funny thing Hugo was after girls all the time... And he was about 24 and i was 13 and we was with all these coca cola girls and i wish i new that my tool was for more than peeing out of... There was hugo like a dog chating all the girls up and me talking about my bike....

I could go on more but you might get bored so if you want to know more i will re post again

 C'mon Carlo. We want gossip..

In short... Wilkerson getting arested and taken away by helicopter... Large ray taking a crap in the hotel microwave and i cant describe the smell but it was beyond anything...

Another rider i stayed with was Gary pollak.. this kid was amazing at everything... I remember Joe johnson came to ride with me and gary and he said lets go ride with the plywood hoods... i will ill in bed when they got back asked them who was riding and they said well there was this 12 year old called dave mirra... he is quite good....  that was good days 87 ish... i had jsut finished with skyway and was riding for adidas but i had a disagrement with them and they owed me alot of money so i came back to england...

The manager i had at the time made me want to quit riding i was burnt and i came back and did not go back to the u.s intil 2001 when i competed again... no funny stories now...i guess riding pro is big buisiness....

I was there when he invented the tailwhip air, Ice pick,toothpick,smith.. double peg grinds... so many things... It shocked me how he just stoped though.. i mean he did not ride after 90 not at all...he did double whips better than pretty much everyone in 89 than what people do now...

Interview head on . Carlo. Why don't you compete now? Is it just you're burnt out from competing for so many years, or is the travelling too much now you have family. Do you worry about being good enough or is it simply too many injuries? Last weekend Jamie and Simon came first and second in Vert at the Dew action sports tour in orlando. Don't you fancy a bit of that?

Thanks for the interview as such Carlo, and thanks to everyone who was asking questions and being sensible about it too  ;)

I can remember Carlo from bitd, but I gave up before he hit the headlines as such so missed seeing him ride, but I recently got some back issues of Ride that Carlo was in and the pictures are amazing, unfortunatly later the same day before an interview could be done he had a bad accident that kept him off a bike for a while.

Thats why when he asked for a copy of the Radcity pic I was well chuffed, if anything I should be asking for a pic from you Carlo, thanks mate  :-[

Enjoyed the gossip about the Americans. I might try the sh*t in the microwave trick, See how long it takes my wife to guess what it is. Meanwhile here's another crazy Hugo photo.  You can see he was a bit of a devil with the ladies in his younger days. I can guess he was real smooth with the chat up lines..

seriously carlo, you should write a book. dig out all the photos you have and put them in.

and if you ever ask for a go on my bike, i will respectfully say no!!! ripping out the rear dropouts hanging up? sheeeesh!

if you dont have the time to write a book, record some stories to tape, post it to me and i will transcribe it to web pages.

what you have done, and seen, needs to be recorded in some way!!!

if you dont have the time to write a book, record some stories to tape, post it to me and i will transcribe it to web pages.

what you have done, and seen, needs to be recorded in some way!!!
..

I dont want to gossip but one of Haro bikes top riders will leave... Mirra bikes

The reason i dont compete now... Looking back at it and the only reason i would comptete would be for the money... The enjoyment of competing is not there at the moment... Sometimes when i see some of the contests i think i could take them but the other side of me says i cant be bothered... This may sound strange...

My heroes have gone from this and i cant picture me riding the ramp with some of the other riders Humping there way around the ramp... Bestwick is the bset guy out there at the moment and ilike watching him to a certain degree... Kagy is good also...

Im not keen on a lot of the other vert riders.. im not saying they are bad but i would rather watch bestwick , Miron or Hoffman than the others...

Whats funny is i had a email from another very well know U.S bmx rider and they had been told about me writing on this site and they asked me to carry on...

Alot of people know i dont like doing interviews as people dont realy understand what is said or misunderstand abou things.....

I was talking to another rider about them competing the other day and they asked if i would ride with them.. Well maybe but i may ride another comp again but it will have to be the right one and it will have to be fun or i wont go....

If i was you Carlo I would go and kick some vert ass while you still can . A  few riders out there would dread you entering pro vert and I think Bestwick would love the competition . It would be a shame if you never showed these people what you can do. I saw you ride back in the day and thought oh dear time for me to get the fu** out of this sport.

Anyway mate I for one will be backing you all the way so whatever you do good luck.

Hey Carlo,

I just wanted to say thanks for your input, it has been superb hearing your stories about the early days.  I knew you weren't too keen on interviews, so it has been cool to see you talking so candidly.

I second and third that sentiments that it would be cool to see you in a few comps again, i appreciate that you have other priorities now, so i understand.   But as the tea lady says in father ted.....ahhh go on  ;D

I am sure Mr Stupple would flow you a radbmx tee to wear ;)

Thanks again Carlo,...you are a gent and its good to have you on board

Talk soon

All british stuff and some rare footage of Hoffman and Co from 87-88 ish. Had some really big pc drama's lately so once all fixed and up and running i'll get something on here.

How much do you reckon people would be willing to pay for a really good collection of mainly 80's UK riders and all mostly unseen footage as these tapes are from a personal archive.

List of Names:- Carlo, Stephen Laidlaw, Mike Canning, Mat Hoffman age 15, Andy (Angry) Brown, Terry Jenkins, Dave Young, Pepi, Jess Dyrenforth, Rob Bell, Dean Rush and loads of others!

I could do custom Discs where you pick from the full list of riders and i'll do a nice cover and load up an hour of footage...........None of this stuff as far as i know has been put on a disc before.

Answers on a postcard please.

Fletch. Yeah That was it. I remember Carlo mentioning that, but he didn't say who it was.  What an exclusive scoop we had, and we didn't even know it.
To be honest, I only knew Mirra and Nyquist were on the team anyway.

I reckon your all off the scent, look at pro riders historically.....most have had signature frames or there own companies at some point. You shouldnt speculate like that guys its unfair to say others are involved unless you have facts and proof and i'm sure its just coincidence.
