Post by: munners on April 11, 2007, 08:19 AM
Hi all,

My eldest is off today for half term and i am going to take him over to a park at lunchtime where they got a quarter pipe and try and bust some moves. If im honest i am shitting myself and but ive gotta pull it off because i told him how good i used to be.  :idiot2:

ANY TIPS IF YA GOT A FEW COBWEBS. I aint been on a pipe for about 20 years - SERIOUS!!!!!

if you ain't been on one for 20 years, then the only advice i can give is get padded up as much as you can and take things very slowly.  it's not as easy as it used to be.

go fast at it
the skills will come flooding back.

be confident. dilly dallying when you get to the coping will only test your pads.

I had the exact same problem when I took my son to the skatepark. he's seen all the pics and expected the same. I gave it my best shot. I still have a way to go though. Time will bring it back. Or you could do as ruler said and hit it at ballslappin' speed and hope for the best!  :daumenhoch:

Walk before you run. In the years i've been back i've seen a few people do them self some damage on their first time out thinking it's like riding a bike, oh wait it is riding a bike  :crazy2:

You know what i mean though.  :P

I've shown the pictures/video of the times i've been caught on camera and my boy was well impressed!!  (rose tinted glasses me thinks)  ;)  but like i said.....whatever you do he'll think it's great that you're out there with him and taking an interest.......a great way to bond with your kids  :daumenhoch:

good quality pads, full face helmet, gloves,  respect the fact that it has been twenty odd years and try to ride as much as your wife will let you

you'll see progess every time you go out, even if its just your balance improving

enjoy  flaz

Yeah I just rode at the weekend for the first time in ages...I just plucked up the courage to do the spine and just about got over it, but stacked it on the second go, I was proper knackered after though...but the trick is to keep going out, now summer's here I'm trying to get out after work for an hour at least 3 times a week, take my kid with me...he wants to ride ramps, but his grandad bought him an apollo last year (Halfords own make) which is OK for rolling around, but too big for him to do ramps, so hopefully I'll be getting a 16" for him.

But, back to you, don't go mental first time out and be disappointed...it took me a while to get the bollocks to drop in on a 5 ft quarter pipe!  I used to do it without thinking...still, I reckon another 5 to 10 2 hour sessions and I'll be airing again...remember to take your phone and make sure you have St Johns ambulance on speed dial!

good luck Nick, don't forget to tell someone where you are...., like the St John's Ambulance !  :LolLolLolLol:

know what ya man, theres a small skate park near me, i'd love to get down there, but theres a few little lads doing whip-flips et al, and they hadn't even invented them when i last rode a BMX on a freestlye ramp  :(

god for it, but one step at a time !!  :)

Same here Munners. I stopped riding about 23 years ago. Got the bug again late last year and built myself a firebird freestyler.
Every time I think about going out on it with the kids Im touching cloth. :crazy2:

You'll need as much protective gear as you can get , cos it takes AGES longer for the pain to go ,WHEN you come off (and you will )  :uglystupid2:

Your gonna love it   >:D  :daumenhoch:

I,ve just got back on a bmx in 25 years.I've been going to Coventry memorial park for about a month now and I've improved loads.Long way to go tho' but I absolutly love it.I sometimes get a bit of a crowd watching the 'old man' on the 'little bike'.I cant wait to go to epic in Birmingham or rom so I can get on proper ramps-these tiddly little 1/3 pipes are no good (he says)! Carry on at your own pace I say.Ian

Heh Nick, Don't go crashing that GT frame up :LolLolLolLol: Took me ages to clean it up!!

Seriously though my first go on a quarter pipe in 20 years ended up with a week off work........er........thinking about it, that was cool.

Oh and the touching cloth comment ain't good, but the touching tarmac thats worse!

Thought i would give ya an update!

What a wicked afternoon that was! :D

I aint gonna lie. I got no air! I shit it!!!!!! Absolutely, and i aint ashamed to admit it. I even read up on this site before hand, Bob Haro's tips  in the freestyle section, ya know, pedals level, lift the bars forward as you leave the ramp.  If only........ I styled it out and told my boy that my calfs were hurting pedaling. What a failure.  :'(

I have been there twice since and i reckon i will pluck up the courage tomorrow. It would be so much easier (not a good excuse) if i was with someone egging me on and teaching me through it.

When i meet you guys at MK i might show myself up,  but who cares, its what it all about.
Practice makes perfect.  :daumenhoch:

Managed to "do" the small spine at Tipton today and actually get about a foot of air, took some time to get the bottle to do it though, and I was surrounded by kids airing 3 feet out of the quarter and dumping from ramp to ramp (what the piss is that called again?)

SO, the more you do, the easier it gets!

Go on the Munners!

I'm exactly at the same riding point as you, except I went a bit OTT at Epic, but I learnt a valuable lesson, I'd rather pull one decent tyre tap after a whole day's riding on a mellow ramp than just stack it trying an aerial and not pulling it at all!

Good luck, keep us updated!
