I was given a portable quarter-pipe last month, thanks again John, and I set it up on the side yard of my house. There was a 5' high sloping dirt bank opposite the quarter pipe 40' away. The bank helped to gain speed toward the qp but with all the pedeling both ways and due to my advanced age, I got tired quick. So something had to be done.
Before,

not quite an embankment anymore

We had the bowl compacted and 3/4 of the way shaped and the hips had several good lines cut in, but then it rained.

The deepest part of the bowl is around 5.5'. The hips are almost 4'. The transition is close to 7'. Thankfully there was little erosion from the rain and my son and I were able to ride for a couple of hours this week. Today we do the finishing touches and then session.

looks a treat. i remember we used to have a few mud bowls and mud 1/4's bitd in cardiff. (i remember one guy-denim- he used to do 6ft airs on a 6ft high mud quarter which was oververt. he used to bone to avoid landing on the flat and sometimes hang up half a wheel. plus you used to have to avoid the tree roots sticking out the 'transition' and the ruff gravel car park. this was before cardiff museum had its extension and the small car park was demolished. great times)
i'm sure you'll have some great times out the backyard this year.
