Title: Extra tubes for extra tubes sake?
Post by: dannywhiteley on June 10, 2008, 04:00 PM
I see loads of (especially late 80's) freestyle frames that look like someone had an accident in a metal tubing factory.  Know what I mean, extra bars welded into frames for what appears to be no other reason that to make the frame look different.

The Scorpion in the other thread is a new one on me.  Two top tubes, only one above the other rather than nesxt to each other in that classic gen 1 (free)style.

Heres a few others, and if anyone can explain the reasons why (other than one-upmanship in the annual welder of the year awards) i'd me nost appreciative.

Frames just seemed to get weird in the late 1980's.

p.s. if these are your frames, dont take offence, as I really like them.  Just want to understand what the function of most the extra metal work is.  I imagine it started with strengthening, and somewhere to put your feet, and went from there...

Trickstar II is one VERY ugly beast, I think Hutch built them especially for the blind.

:) WTF  is that last frame,Vector? Look like oversized mudguard brackets!! :LolLolLolLol:

I should imagine originally for strength,as a lot of companies only made raceframes & then wanted to jump on the freestyle bandwagon.Or they liked welding.A lot....

With all that welding going on you'd have thought they could have remembered to weld the FreeAgent's dropouts rather than just crimping them in place with the seat and chainstays.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that red frame is a vector freestyler ???

Very rare I believe and so nuts, I really want one :D Christ no wonder they where expensive then and now, look at the metal and welds that went into the thing :LolLolLolLol:

I liked GT's philosophy that 'bolt on is better'.  The Performer was a clean, nice looking bike but if you wanted framestanders and the like, you could always buy the bolt on bits :daumenhoch:  Most of those bikes (above) are absolutely hideous.  Add the CW luggage rail model to that list, too.

Of course, the MCS Styler  (1sn and 2nd Generation frames)
it's like they didn't learn a thing from the the first design.... their 2nd design is just as overindulged and boggled.

That MCS is another ive never seen before.  I take it the black one is the gen 1 and the chrome the gen 2?  If thats the case they went from bad to worse.
