Title: Are better now than BITD ??
Post by: sean on July 16, 2008, 10:58 PM
I'm not.  In fact the last time I rode I got dizzy, felt a bit nauseous and had to sit down for 5 minutes....  and I thought getting 1ft out of the 1/4 pipe was high enough .....

But there must be some who got better...

I think some in some areas i've improved...

got 9ft out the 10ft 1/4 at Rampworx few weeks back... don't think i got that high BITD?? (almost hit the roof )

Was made up with that...  but i seem to get  'pop-out-itis'  every other month!!!

able to do a few more combo variations than i did back then too......

I just get knackered too easily nowadays though... fall off more too!!

when i was a kid i did a few dirt jumps rode round a crap track and that was it.

my wheelies were good though.

Now, I'm not an accomplished rider at all, but, I have dropped in a mini ramp, and the pool and big bowl at saffy and got
an inch of air out of a 1/4, carved a vert ramp, bunny hopped roughly 19" and almost managed one of them fakie roll back things.

I'm defo better, but then that wasn't hard.  :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:

I'm better, no idea why, maybe got a bit more appreciation of what I'm actually doing.

But riding's changed a lot, I rode a lot of mini ramp in the 90's , but never aired out of them. Now I get a regular 5 to 6ft and do a whole lot less lip tricks.

ive lost a few tricks that i used to be able to do in the 90's, im more worried about getting a bad injury and not being able to work so that holds me back a bit, wish i could go back to not caring if i got hurt, on the upside im trying more lip tricks now than i used to :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:

I was a racer and dirt jumper so any skatepark trick i learn is new and exciting  :)

i learnt 3 new tricks on monday night, tyre grab, lazy one hander (inside hand) and taboggon all done over a hip, then on a big quarter, then crashed not getting the hand back on and got my danglies stuck between the back wheel and frame  :LolLolLolLol:

need to try em on vert next

i go from one injury to the next, i guess everyones the same

I was average to above average as a kid, but wasn't scared at giving ramps and jumps a try (I was usually one of the first off it whenever we built a new ramp or jump).

Nowadays I'm still average when compared to the people I race against, but have difficulty finding the bottle to get my wheels off the ground.  It comes back occasionally, but not for very long.

Getting older doesn't bother me, but the thing that pisses me off most about it is the brain develops a self-preservation gene we didn't have when we were kids, which holds back progression.

I wasn't very good BITD and I'm still not very good today but I just can't give up,
this little 20" kiddys bike has a power over me !!

BUT when I do ride and get about a foot of air or do a flatland trick and I hear or see someone saying YEAH it's such a Fookin rush ....

39 in a cpl of months and I just bought myself a newschool ride and I'm lovin ridin it, FREESTLYE best sport ever invented I think I'll be riding when I'm 60+

riding nearly 28yrs and still lovin it.

I'd say yes but I said to myself a few years back that I'm not down to progress my riding anymore, just to have fun & enjoy doing what I do. Sometimes you still discover new things within your abilities & that leads to a certain amount of progression which keeps you chomping at the bit to get back in the saddle :daumenhoch: As long as I'm enjoying it I'm not stopping, regardless of if I'm going forwards or backwards (to fakie?!) with my riding ability :)

Not easy to answer this one but what i will say is that today i ride and do stuff that feels good to me, bitd due to competing the fun element was taken away to an extent due to learning tricks for the sake of competing not because they were fun to do.

as far as flatland goes, there is no way i'm gonna ever get back all my tricks.

i was never that good on ramps bitd, but still had some lip tricks which i can't do now. although, i have learnt a few bits and pieces on a mini ramp which i couldn't do before. maybe i am slightly better on ramps now than i was before. but there's not much difference between rubbish and really rubbish is there.

exactly the same :2gunsfiring_v1: despite being determined to progress at jumping, too scared :-[

although my tables are getting slightly flatter than BITD, but my technique leaves something to be desired as i can only lay the bike as flat as i can get it between my legs and keep my feet on the pedals at the same time :idiot2:

Never had access to proper ramps or BMX Tracks BITD!!

Only ever went to a Track 3 or 4 times and never raced (Too far to get there by cycling)

I could to endos, back hops, front hops, wheelies (all the basics) and kickturns on any suitable dirt, grass, concrete or wooden banking).

Mostly it was just jumping which I was quite good at.   Mostly because the ramps we built weren't easy to ride due to the abnormal transitions they had.  I always used to kick off the ramp and get insane height and distance compared to any of the local lads.  Of course I was incredibly stupid and insane BITD.

Fast forward 20+ years and I'm shite.   I got beat at Preston racing Old School by a 9 year old (MADD PUPP) although I did fall off!!  :LolLolLolLol:

I'm buying a Small ramp (2 heights) off TwoBobRob which I'm going to use to practice being airbourne on.    Just to get my confidence up and to sort out my balance in the air which seems to be way off.   Once thats dialled and I get kick off it and get some distance then I'll attempt some doubles at the track.    The track these days seem way scarier than they did 20+ years ago.  Maybe as old age approaches my self preservation has kicked in.

I wish I never stopped BMXing.  I'm really enjoying it (apart from the injuries)!!  :daumenhoch:

I am absolutly sht..an embarrasment to freestyle  :4_17_5:

But when people see the number 1 on my plate they give me that knowing look of "he must be rad as hell and sponsored by Haro too WOW".

When they ask to see my moves I tell em I  have just had a major skate park accident and out of action just now (sponsors orders). :LolLolLolLol:

Being more keen than able, about the same.
Better at some things, like pulling a small air on the 1/4 at Rom to get a better run-up to the bank where the tyre jump was held. Never was a ramp rider, so that might even be seen as progress.
I could bust a few flatland moves at one time, but they've faded now. The bike's so different from the lighter, shorter, 'ride anything' setup I had in the 80s/90s. Which admittedly sounds like a very poor excuse but I've said it anyway.

Interesting q..... Having no track & very little in the way of ramp access when I was younger helped me gravitate to flatland. I still have my '86 Master & I can still do everything I ever did on it albeit perhaps looking a bit less polished than I did BITD after spending ridiculous amounts of time riding it.

I ride more mtb these days but only because I don't know many others to ride with - which was the one factor which made me devote more time to other pastimes when I was 20 after riding for a decade solid. I'm technically very able on the mtb (& the road bike which I race too) which I totally attribute to the time spent on BMX. I will be gutted if my son doesn't do something similar - it's helped me avoid death on so many occasions whilst commuting!

Just tried racing this year (Billy Stup - I raced against you - you beat me - but only just!) Great fun - highly recommended to anyone who's not tried it.

Wish I still had a coaster brake!

How do you get air out of 1/4 pipe?  Were they called 'aerials' BITD?

Any instructions anywhere?  Guys in vids always make it look sooooo easy.....

Still poo, but enthusistic at it (BMX, not pooing).

I still try to push myself... but injuries take twice as long to heal now!!

by the time i'm riding properly again... i have to re-learn everything i learned before the injury!!  :-\
