Title: RAREST OLD SCHOOL PARTS
Post by: Swivel on January 12, 2009, 08:53 AM
What are some of the rarest parts in the world? Could be anything from a f/f, to some pedals or even a single small component. Terry Jenkins has the nos Gen 1 Haro and I'm sure there can't be many of those about and that Holeshot on here recently was bloody rare, but there must be things even rarer than that hidden away. Do you have something or know of something so rare that there's only one or two in existence?

For me it's all about mongoose so it would have to be the winner's choice tyres......but as for everything else the rarest thing i've stumbled accross in forums etc. is this prototype hutch brake :

ah, the hutchbull. that lawsuit aluminium kids frameset is a rare beast.

Rumor has it the final nail in the coffin came when Hutch designed a new Aluminum racing frame. It was extremely light. (The frame weighed 1lb 9 oz.) However it didn't hold up well. A kid was seriously hurt on one when the frame broke. Hutch was sued. The frame was recalled. Again, this is frequently referred to as a rumor. I am unsure as to the complete authenticity of this.

I'd add my Rebel cruiser to that list.  Apart from the one I have, ive seen maybe one other (although that might have been the same one prior to powder coating by a previous owner).  Ive never managed to confirm that.

Those Hutch brakes are funky as ! , here are some pics that some have probably seen before . Woody Itson at the El Dorado OSBMX event last year with his Trickstars ( which he still owns ) from bitd , one in Gold and the other in futuristic black . Both running those brakes & SST hubs ( uber rare coaster rear sets ) .

The hardest thing to find that I was ever actually after was the MCS Magnum with the large gussett. (I had one in about 1982, and it was 2 years old when I got it.)

Took me almost 4 years to find, and now I have it I really can't be arsed to do anything with it. I didn't realise it was so short!

What about this - BMX Products (mongoose) manufactured rampar - been through all the rampar / raleighs in our museum and on bmxmuseum.com and in the BMX products section on there as well and can't see a single one. There's a selection of the other rarer BMX products frames up there such as the mototrac, JAG, RACER-X etc. but not this rampar ? There are other rampar frames up there that are similar with the gusset but not the same - note the looptail and also the mongoose-esque box section behind the BB - I know it was more than likely US only so doubt we've got one over here but anyone ever seen one of these ?

Bobafett,

Last year I was bidding on a complete bike with tuffs and flites, didn't win got sniped at not much north of $600.

In a similar vein this one will be difficult to find, only 4 made by the Special Products Development Unit (SBDU) of Raleigh, that said one was on the bay late last year and may have been the one I have a picture of below

Not that i'll be saving up for one any time soon  :LolLolLolLol:
It's more of an off shoot interest for me with it being tied into mongoose - but you never know....one day when i've got all the others ticked off the list !

no they are still NOS. the moment you take them back off, then they are just another used bmx artical.

Interesting? :)

Dont wanna go off the subject but does that mean if you build a bike out of complete NOS parts then that complete bike can be sold as a NOS bike? :-\
Title: Re: RAREST OLD SCHOOL PARTS
Post by: jT Racing on January 13, 2009, 02:05 PM
NO, unless you sell it to yourself. it's all in the wording, and the english language, though complicated and difficult, is great and diverse.

Say for instance.

here we have a complete, perfect, mint P.K ripper.
a NOS frame and forks built with a NOS tangle 125LP headset, NOS powerwing bars. etc etc.

You make it clear it was a NOS frameset and NOS parts used to build it.  But, if it's been owned by 4 people and had parts changed but is still in new condition, it's not NOS and never could be and you couldn't take it apart and sell off the bits as new old stock when they are used.

NOS means new old stock. it's not a stock item once sold, used and removed from use and resold. it's a used item in whatever condition.
it' still stock when unused because it can go back into stock on the shelf. NOS implies an unused item, a brand new off the shelf part. It doesn't say what condition it's in, i've had many a new part in shit condition from bmx shops.
you could sell the bike as brand new, but it's not stock. I'm not sure how important it is, but if i buy a new item, i like the ides that it's not been used several times by various people. if i buy a used mint item, then at least i won't be dissapointed to see slight evidence of use. Like i say, it's all in the wording.

Please let this thread stay where it is, if you want the NOS debate, open another one.

john

wonder how they worked out the wheels were 32% harder to bend when using that hub.

Yep , Brian Scura has paid a pretty penny for SST parts over the last 12 months or so  :daumenhoch: . I read somewhere where he wanted at least one example of each product for a personal collection , he had originally got rid of everything years ago .

Greg Hill married Liz Scura , brian's sister I think .

After SST Brian was I believe the creator/designer of the ORYG gyro .

Yep, I doubt Scura had to spend too much of his fortune on his SST collection though, he got a dollar for every gyro sold......
