Title: Welcome Mr. Fiola
Post by: andy619 on February 11, 2009, 02:47 AM
Like the title says, welcome Eddie.  I was going to post these in the other thread but it just didn't seem right.  In case you couldn't tell, you have a HUGE following of fans from back in the day and still today.  You were such a inspiration to almost every freestyler on this site including myself, none more than Quadrophenia.  I can remember the first time I met you at the Pipeline in 84 and your riding style has influenced my own ever since, forever imitated but never duplicated.  I am sure your inbox will be flooded by pm's, but don't let that scare you off.  This site has a wealth of knowlegde and history and great people.  Take a peek around and check some of the archived pages, your name is in quite a few of them.  Thank you for all that you have done for the sport.

Great that you're on here Eddie, and as everyone says - Welcome !

I had the honour of helping with the organising of your tour visit to the Picketts Lock Centre in London, and it was a pleasure to see you use our ramps !

I agree with one of the earlier posts on this thread - your 360 jump to flat, off our trick ramp was one of the smoothest moves I've ever seen, I couldn't hear the landing it was so smooth. The jump just came out of the blue and was so spontaneous, it was the highlight of the day for me.

Loving these pictures.

I'm desperately trying to find some of when you did a demo at Redcar Racecourse up in Cleveland in the North East of England.  Maybe 84, 85ish?

That was a class day and I remember it now.  For two reasons.

1.  The tricks I saw blew me away - never seen anything like it before.  Never seen bikes like it before.  Folding forkstands!!! Wow.
2. My mates dad drove us there in a Ford Escort XR3i - What a car!!

Thanks.

Hey Eddie, I have a video of the GT show in Hawaii from 1985.  Do you remember how crap that 7' ramp was to ride?  Believe it or not that was the first ramp that I learned to do airs on.  You and Dave Breed still put on a great show.  That show is just one of the many memories I cherish still today of you and your riding.  I wish I still had all of my still pictures of that day.

I haven't seen that Vans ad in years, I had those boots Eddie's holding, them and the matching lo tops are definitely up there with the best Vans designs made. And this was always my favourite Performer ad....first one?

I'm curious about the airing both ways bit, very unusual in the 80's.

I've said it before about the video of Mike Dominguez doing an opposite one hand one footer in the KOS when he's wearing black jeans and a blue and black checked shirt. I took me ages to notice this but when I did I was blown away, SO SO unsual back then. I don't remember anyone else doing it until the very late 80's even early 90's.

It's a tragedy that it never got any press mate - b@stards!  ;) But then again I never thought you got the coverage you deserved anyway dude. If you think about the technical side of it it was a big deal back then. I can still only go one way and I'm ambidextrous which is bizarre. I can write with both hands, I can kick a football equally as good with both feet etc. but the last time I tried to air the other way it ended with a face plant!  ;D

Know clue where that bike is . That was a long time ago and I've hit my head one to many times.

I love all the PIC'S

Airs both ways you see that Lakewood halfpipe, no flat and down hill like a snowboard halfpipe. you have to go both ways .

Aha! That makes a lot of sense. I'm much stronger airing one way than the other on my board too....I tend to try alley oops on my weak side.

Weird how I never knew you could do that though - (couldn't have been that many pics taken of you going right to left then....)

Thanks for clearing that up!

Can you still do it? And how high could you get airing 'the other way'?

Let's put this in proper context. For the young, Bestwick is the current God and deservedly so. For those in their mid twenties to early thirties, The Hoff was the undisputed ruler AND vert innovator. And for those of us not ashamed to admit our age, but rather unabashedly scream it out, we can proudly acknowledge the forefathers of vert, style, and BMX love who will forever be an influence on not only us, but BMX in it's entirety...Wilkerson, Dominguez,Blyther, and the man who had more of an initial impact to our sport probably more than any other...RADBMX's newest and most distinguished vert legend, Mr. Eddie Fiola. There have been many names that have come and gone, perhaps even had more influence individually for some people but Eddie captured the imagination of the globe. Looking back on it all, Fiola was the spark. Bob gave it legs but Eddie gave it, and us, the spirit. Thank you Mr. Fiola. You are legend.

You know, I missed out on old school bmx the first time round, but just to watch these legends ride at this do would mean more to me than anything (almost).  I think I envy just about everyone here for being part of that the first time round, and curse my parents for shagging too damn early  >:D :-[

I am so looking forward to mk09 so I can make my admittedly lame mark on the bmx world (oap race, well race-ish)

Hope it all goes well for all the riders, Eddie.

Hi Eddie, good to see you on here. These Poms are nutters. LOL Good ones but.  :2funny:
Anyway, did you ever meet Jeff Watson? You and him were huge inspirations for me when I rode skateparks down here in Australia. I'm almost finished building a replica of Jeffs mongoose.
Did you know he has apparently passed away in the last few years? I'm still trying to confirm this. Very hard to do from down here.
Good to see your still riding too. I see the pics from Steve B from time to time and you still ride hard.

wow - I would simply love to be at that Kickstand reunion - sounds awesome, and a dream of mine to visit Woodward.
The Old Fools reunion roadtrips we do are great, so Im sure youll all have a superb time.Ours are for 30yr olds and over - where does the age 32 limit come form at the kickstand event?

Here's a thought, I was thinking about how many of these people attending have had such a huge influence on BMX and shaped the way it is today in auch a massive way that without them, we'd be nothing. I was thinkng of people like Greg hving to scrimp and save to buy a new school bike, and Andy waiting to get the bike he really wanted, etc etc...
Here's my thought - Take Eddie Fiola as an example - if I was the owner of one of the very successful BMX comapanies out there right now, and I had some complete bikes in my range, or custom built bikes, then I would not hesitate for ONE second to pay out of the company's pocket a free bike, or frame, or whatever the sopmeone like Eddie needed to keep riding, and I'd maintain that free flow for as long as he wanted to ride. People like Eddie and others of his kind deserve a little coomething back for helping create the BMX world we know so well today.
Im afraid I dont own a bike company, but Eddie, Greg, Andy, Voelker, DMC, Blyther, Dominguez etc etc etc etc etc if I ever do [!!] you know where to come for a bike!
perhaps Voelker still gets a GT flow, Im not sure, but I though tId use this as a talking point!

WOW!!!!

WHAT A LINE UP!
Woodward is gonna be crazy if everyone on that list turns up. Would LOVE to be there and see that. And ride. Brilliant.

G

(Why is everything in March this year?!
I booked up for Old Fools at the end of this month a while ago.
Then Aileen wanted to take me to the Monaco Grand Prix for my fortieth - turns out it was cheaper to fly to Australia for the first race - flights, accomodation, tickets to the race - the lot - than it was for just the grandstand tickets for Monaco!!
Great - it's once in a lifetime - lets do it.
Hadn't checked the dates had we?
Clashed with Old Fools, which wasn't so bad, but then the economy REALLY turned to sh1t and we just shelved the idea - lot of money.
Then I see that this reunion is gonna be on in a fortnight and tonight's the first I've heard of it. Money would be an issue, but , probably like lots of other people here, I can't risk taking too much time off work at the moment to go to something like this in case I don't have a job to go back to.
Absolute bloody nightmare!

OF6 better be worth it   :LolLolLolLol: )

Sir Eddie Fiola, DMC, Brian Blyther, Kevin Jones, Mike Dominguez, RL Osborne, Martin Aparijo, Mat Hoffman, Neil Ruffell, Jay Miron, Woody Itson= BMX freestyle. Period. Eddie= Trix R 4 Kids, backward-to-front brakes, the kink in the downtube of the Performer/Pro F/S Tour/Dyno, Wheel discs, "I never leave home without it", the great colors, the reason I wanted a Performer/Pro F/s Tour, the reason I love old/mid school(I still ride a 97 Dyno Slammer)....ect.
Who do you rate? "on ramps: Eddie(Eddie, Eddie, Eddie...) Fiola, Mike Dominguez and Brian Blyther. On ground: myself, R.L. Osborne and Woody Itson." What about Ron Wilkerson? "Ron wins, but he's not in the top 3 for me." --Martin Aparijo.
Eddie, I enjoy your flatland runs on Youtube. Betwwen you, Martin, Kevin Jones and Dennis McCoy, I have a tough time choosing my favorite. Yes Kevin did so many difficult tricks, but you make them look fun!
As for GT, I think they used the money that you, Martin, Dave Voelker and John Parker made for them to buy Aurburn, Robinson, Powerlite and Schwinn. They went bang after that. And since new school bikes look like racing bikes, I think maybe you should go back to them and design a new bike that we all could ride and actually love the way it looks and rides.
RAD--the movie-- is still good after all of these years.
You rule.

Thanks for all the inspiration.

Eddie who?
Title: Re: Welcome Mr. Fiola
Post by: laughinggravy on July 17, 2009, 05:47 PM
When I were a nipper (well, about 15), me and some mates form the rural village of Tedburn in Darkest Devon, caught a bus to Exeter, train to Bristol, another train to Bath (I think), then walk to some sports centre, to see the GT World Tour.

Got there all stoked, saw Andy Preston's Pro Landrover (not quite the Porsches the U.S. crowd had!), and crammed into the sports arena, nearly pissing ourselves to see some BIG AIR!

Where's the frickin' quarter pipe???!!! Word was, it wouldn't go through the door into the sports hall (80's organisation!). So we had a flat and kickturn ramp show, gutted.

That was,

Until Fiola's last run, pedals across the arena full blat, HUGE 360 off the kickturn to flat, pretty much landing in the doorway leading out, f-uckin sick!! That one wiped out all the disappointment from the non appearance of the quarter pipe, and paying the GT importer guy (geoff summat?) a 1980's tenner for a super light weight world tour tee, that were being sold from the boot of his car in the car park underneath! (like the quarter non-appearance, p-r-o !!)

Happy days. The only other time I saw you ride Eddie was at the Slough Kellogs (nuther arduos train journey from the countryside!), and even I as a naive impressionable 15 y.o. knew getting the very best riders in the world to back hop through cones was ab-so-lutely f-uckin WACK!!! The best skatepark riders in the world, the Pipeline locals, doing back hops!! You could see the disgust on Mike D's face, he just barely bothered to do the hops.
And then goes over the bars doing a kickturn! He can't have been too happy that day. Least I got to see Haro do a loooong nose wheelie, til his MX1000 exploded, quality.

wow. cool. Lee. looks  like a good laugh.
Every house I look at to buy, i first go and check out the garden , hoping to have enough room for a half pipe.  Must be great having your own. Alvin's a lucky bugger. Specially if Lee and Ediie come round for a session,

i couldn't view the other photos. I'll try again later.
cheers

Ross

First saw Eddie Fiola ride in Cumbria in 84 with Bob Morales on that awesome yellow peformer, he bunny hopped a security railing when he first arrived on his way to get changed into his riding gear.Bar press with his helmet nearly touching the front tire and Fiola bike walk we're unreal.Pleased to hear he's well and still enjoying his riding.

Some great pics and memories. I remember Seeing Mr Fiola @ Cleethorpes Leisure Centre. Whem Geoff Baraclough who ran Wheel Ways and Team GTGB brought Eddie over. I saw him ride the quarter pipes on a GT Pit bike with Red Tuffs on it. Nearly 30 years later i would never thought I would own that bike but I do! Can`t prove it but I have nothing to gain by lying just wish there were some pictures!
