I keep reading that chrome adds around 1lb in weight to a frame anyone know if this is true, just curious.

buy a nos old school hutch f/f, weigh it, build it up, ride it, un build it, re-weigh it, minus the 2nd weight from the first and you have your answer :daumenhoch:

When you take off some peeling chrome it doesn't weigh much!!
Its only plated and is very thin!!
On an OS F+F weighing around 6 lbs. 1lb is way too heavy.
And Daz!! Stop smoking the hard stuff. Your whacked out of your skull!! :LolLolLolLol:
-
obviously there is a weight, but never a pound.
I know that mercedes racing cars were traditionally silver as they found they saved a couple of pounds over the weight of the car, but that's paint, probably primer and top coat over a whole car, so they stripped then paint and from then on didn't paint the car's body work.
I'm sure that thin chrome plating wieghs less than paint, but I could be wrong.

S&Ms zinc coating weighs less than paint and chrome, cos its like a colouring, rather than a coating.
Dont know if that helps any ...... :-\ :LolLolLolLol:

I think we need someone who wants to rechrome their F+F.
They can peel off all the old Chrome and weigh it!!
Who's up for it!! :LolLolLolLol:

Or, they could just weigh it before, and after its been rechromed ? ??? :LolLolLolLol:

HOW WILL I GET THIS CHROME BACK ON?
:'(

In the latest issue of Ride: Hanson Little's Bike Check which is a chrome Mutiny Mystic, He is asked how much weight the chrome adds, he replies "the chrome added 1lb in weight to the frame alone"
I know its hard to believe but its not the first time I have heard this. I have also heard powdercoat adds a substantial amount of weight to a frame?
Anyhow its not important I was just curious.

Proclass35 stripped the paint off his sons bike and saved 3oz.

That has to be a piss take, dont it?
I remember in the 80s there were bike tests that listed 2 frame weights, one chrome, one paint. In the 90s that seems like such a joke but here it is again. Look out for goggles on open face helmets next!

Chrome adds quite a bit... Compare chrome rim weights to anodised ones

22g on a Odyssey Midway rim

True, my chrome rim ways a ton! :LolLolLolLol:
-
;) 22g is a massive amount.... way more than you'd save by using hollow stem bolts ::)
-
I had a Chrome grim reaper frame and i weighed it before building it up... 4lbs
According to easterns website the painted ones weigh in at 4lbs no mention of the chrome ones being heavier... mine wasnt... :daumenhoch:
Maybe chrome finish does make a frame heavier..... by a few milligrams... :-\

Any Cro-Mo F+F already has Chromium in it!!
So lets say the tubing is 1mm thick, which it isn't. The Chrome plating is nowhere near 0.1mm thick.
So lets say a F+F weighs 6 lbs and the chrome plating is 0.1mm thick. Then that would make Chrome plating weigh 0.6lbs (which still isn't 1lb).
But only if the Chrome plating is 0.1mm thick, which it isn't. Its much thinner!!
And the F+F isnt 1mm thick either, its much thicker!!
Do the math!!
All of the Chromium in a F+F will probably weigh more than the Chrome plating because its distributed throughout the Frame and forks. The Chrome plating would only be microns thick!! :D
So it can't weigh 1lb?
Thats what I think!! ???

I had my daily flybikes mosca chromed..
The frame straight out of he box weighed 5.3lbs (19.8tt length) it was powdercoated pink :-*.
once back from the chromer it was a dead 5lbs! and that was triple plate chrome also..
hope this helps
-
1lb lol. it weighs fook all, a few grams tops. the plating is microns thick not mm's. if some tool at the plating company lets your tubes fill up with copper doing a high fill plate then you may get a weight from that, but that's just a tardy workman. grams mate, grams. not nigh on 1/2 kilo LOL.

Werd!! :daumenhoch:
