Title: Griff's Curtis Cruiser build thread
Post by: griff on July 04, 2015, 06:29 PM
Today was a very special day :)

After waiting more than a year since Nick Gashead first announced that Brian Curtis was going to make a limited batch of 24" cruisers, today I finally picked up frame number 20 of 20. To say I was excited to see it in the metal is an understatement and a half!
The brazing is just perfect. Brian's attention to detail is incredible and there are some nice little touches like capping and stamping the seat post and rounding off the underside of the steerer tube (just because he thought it looked nicer  :teef:) he clearly has OCD when it comes to putting a frame set together and told me that even after brazing for over half a century he's 'still trying to improve'  ;D
Nice to know that some of the parts he used are original 80s items too ;)

I need to clean up the tubes a bit and then it will be going off to SBD for a clear coat of powder - I just hope I can do it justice! Got most of the bits sorted, few items to resto but really hoping I can get it done in time for MK

Here's a few pics to whet your appetites - more to follow as I go along...

Does Brian do stems Griff? British stems ain't that easy to find and I would have though they would be popular with the bmx and mountain bike lads  :)

No mate, I would have loved to have put a British stem on this but in the end have gone Japanese thanks to Hutchman Dave very kindly sorting me out with a bargain Suntour stem in need of some light restoration. Even if there was an RGD up for sale (haha) then it would be out of my range.
Where practical have sourced British bits, but with some parts such as pedals, hubs, brakes & rims finding something British that's vaguely suitable for a BMX didn't work out. I had considered using Lambert hubs & brakes but need to be able to ride it and stop again!

Must admit my plan to keep the vitus an entente cordiale has suffered for lack of decent bits but French and English parts will dominate. Could always get a stem made ;)

I'm not ;)
I'm just going to get the dark stuff off the tubes with fine emery cloth, then maybe a very gentle polish with peek before it goes to SBD for a clear coat. I've seen some great examples of these painted up, but I really wanted to show off Brian's work, even Mrs Griff thinks it looks like jewellery! The parts I've got going on it are all silver / chrome with black seat/grips/tyres (the only tiny bit of colour is on the OG decals)

Thanks dear

I wanted to get as many  :Great_Britain: bits as I could, but being realistic not 100%
Got everything sorted, just waiting on a few bits to arrive and got some others to restore
Nothing super expensive parts wise but have put some thought into how I think it will look - just hope it works out ;)

Little update!
Made a start at cleaning up the frame tonight with some emery tape. Not quite finished but got a fair bit done before it got too dark (& before I'd taken all the skin off the side of my thumb :teef: )

Once I'm happy will have a go with the Peek before it goes off to SBD  :daumenhoch:

Massive thanks to the 2 Daves for helping a poor cripple get his bike built yesterday, I'm all set for MK now :4_17_5:

Had a very nice time over at Hutchman's yesterday/today and thanks to him & Stodgy (who popped over to build up the wheels) I now have a bike that I can ride (in a couple of weeks)

Actually, when I say Stodgy 'popped' over, he ended up staying for ages as 72 spokes had to be cut down & rethreaded to fit  :D

Just got the pedals to swap for proper DX & it's done, here are a couple of teaser pics until the bloody sun makes an appearance

Since I'm highly distracted by MK approaching, thought I might as well do a parts list and give some thanks to the people who've helped me get this built (Stodgy - Wheels, Hutchman - everything else!), sold me the bits and in some cases donated stuff  Gutted that I haven't been able to ride it yet, but since I waited more than a year for the frameset a couple more weeks won't hurt! As a kid I completely overlooked UK BMX stuff, but thanks to RAD I've developed quite an affection for it. Brian Curtis' reputation as a master of the art of brazing is 100% warranted & on top of that has been lovely to deal with - can't imagine many people have the guy who built their frame ringing them up just to see how they're getting on with it. Nearly everything on the bike came from people on this forum, you guys are Rad as F**K   :4_17_5:

Stunning bike Griff, was a pleasure to meet you and see this beauty in the flesh at the weekend. I wish I had taken your advice and slept in my car now!! I have only just seen this thread or I would have had more of a clue about the bike. Seeing this almost makes me want to strip the chrome off my Curtis made frame ....no joke!  :daumenhoch:

I think they're fine Dave, not tried applying force yet though! (Just enough to avoid colliding with Phil Huf as he rode into a bush full of stingers)

For some reason Griff the only time I saw this was in the dark after the dog and duck shut and you were about to go back to your hotel.
Lovely finish on that frame ... Beautiful craftsmanship .... Top dollar !   "wantit"
Got to agree  with Rob about the bars though..  Strange design .. A bit like kneesavers?

I must have missed this thread the first time around - really sorry about that  :-[
A really great build from start to finish. It was a great idea to clearcoat the frame, it looks really good. Fantastic build, with a nice personal touch to the bb  :4_17_5:
