To keep the ball rolling on this great forum as Deeman amazing build..
I have haro gen 1 sport the oldest to date on the haro registry.
I got this from Raddad on here (great knowledgable guy) late last year.
I have been doing lots of research getting the correct parts for this very early sport and finally ready to share the progress of this build.(many thanks too stubill )
I have always wanted one when watching the Kellogg`s series BMX in `84..
Rushing home from school to watch or programming the old ferguson video star vhs to record if out..
/>Or..
/>I have lost count the times I have watch this and paused it to get ideas.(cheers Danny)
I have now got most of the bits for now to complete this build but the haro vectors I have need a refurb and planning on doing this weekend.
Here are a few pics of the frame as I had it off Jim...
It has a few marks on the drop outs which I like to be honest.
I like the patina and imagine Mike D rode it over tightening the wheels after a session at the Kellogg`s event ...
Well here is a few pics of the frame before paint .
And what it will look like when done ..
All the best.. fistblump

Bit of advice..
Got a set of these graphite tuff`s dated 1984..
But ::) the Top riders had the silver graphite hubs not the gold..
I am in two minds what to do as it would be sacrilege personally to remove the gold.. "nono"

What a fantastic piece of bmx history to own . Looks very nice there.
Good work on the bars they look stunning . All time favorite bars
there :4_17_5:

Ady, it's only my opinion, but you have to keep those Tuffs as they are mate, they're awesome. explosion

if you decide to move on the graphites mate,I'll defo have them :daumenhoch:

Keep it coming... This is very cool fella!

Awesome project. I'd keep the Graphite's, your other alternative is to run a normal set of ally Tuffs, which IMO would water down the wow factor.
Can't wait to see more progress. Keep up the great work.

Going to leave the Campagnolo hubs as it is...
Just cannot do it and the missus who never gets involved with my kids bikes she calls it ::) said looks better looking in gold..
And as Banachek said.. going with the graphites on this build as it fully deserve the wow factor with its history and could agree more with what radovr quoted and going big time on this iconic sport.. fistblump

Little update..

Bit gutted today..
Fitting the flywheel too the hub and found a bit of play on the rivets "help"
I don`t know if anyone would know who could repair this problem..
I bought these ages ago for this build as well..(bloody ebay)
I have got a spare rear which I bought earlier this year in the hope a front graphite might pop up so will swap for now and luckily its dated the same..
Well the tyres landed from Aus with no fees.. ;)

Frame back from the spray shop..
Well happy with the work .
Would have used SBD but..
I just don`t trust the postal service as they have lost in the past two frames inc a Haro 89 bash guard with parts..
I would be gutted this ultra rare frame just one of seven left now to be lost... :crybaby:
anyway..
A few pics to whet your appetite... fistblump

Can't beat a 1st gen Sport, good luck with the build
-
Thanks for that great pic mate.. fistblump
I am planning on doing mine slightly different to the ones I have seen including the above great pic.
The first pic in this thread is what I am planning on doing.
The haro B plate is black and the decals are different too.
I think it looks better with the black and the plate more balanced with the decals..
Plus the decals on the seat post and top two tubes are different also .
I have only seen this pic and believe me I have searched many MaNy :teef: times for a closer pic and this was the best I could find to zoom in..
I don`t know where this was taken or what mag it was from..
If you find more pics that would be a great help.. :daumenhoch:
Many thanks for the dating the seat bud.. fistblump
Just waiting on decals from the main man Mr D... :daumenhoch: so watch this space..
-
Haro/freestyle are not really my thing but this build thread has caught my eye.
Loving the wheel set (want) and the kinda mismash crank setup really works well together.
Looking forward to the next installment :coolsmiley:
I have a blue Kashimax aero i'm not using if you want me to check the date ;)
-
The wheels is what the top boys used but with silver hubs.
Again the crank is the hollow type which D used ..
Interested in the seat mate as the one I have is is in great condition but slightly scratched in one place which I could repair to be honest ..
What is the date condition bud .. :daumenhoch:
-
Shaping up very nicely :daumenhoch:
-
Looking good and glad to see you kept the og finish on the Campy hub centres :daumenhoch:

This is going to be a good thread. ::)
-
Good thread, what kind of tyres did you get?
The blue looks too pale compared to the originals IMHO

Hi mate..
I have looked high and low for a set of the correct era tioga comp 111`s in "blue ::)" with yellow labels size 2.125 .
I would love to have a set but for now had to make do with Old School BMX Comp 3 Blue 20 x 2.125 tyre by kenda.
They have used the original moulds to remake the same pattern.
Got them from Australia.
There was a single one which I missed..

Loving this build thread ... Agreed those decals are ace "wantit"

Decals got me thinking...what products did he actually make? I vaguely seem to remember MDP brake guards.... :-\
-
Little update..
Fitted the decals and NOS haro one and well happy. (cheers Del.. :daumenhoch:)
Was going to use the black vans decals as unsure what the colour was in the original pic
I think it is blue to be honest and my missus who doesn't normally get involved ::) said it looks blue so I gone for that .. fistblump explosion

Great thread Ady :daumenhoch:
Can't wait to see it all come together , im a big 84 sport fan and this ones going to be a real looker 8)
-
Plate looks great Ady! I have that original image saved and I have zoomed and :daumenhoch:zoomed and I am 99% sure the Vans ones are black!
-
Sorry i missed this thread. Great photos and updates-keep them coming. This is going to be one special bike when it's finished :4_17_5:
-
I think you are correct D.. fistblump
I did check with Del originally and was told they where normally blue vans decals ..
(he is wearing black and white chequered vans in the pic)
But ordered both colours just in case..
So going to change them now plus just ordered a black skyway decal as well to replace the blue.
Little update again..
Just picked up my DX pedals from my local powder coater and well happy.
Had two sets done including a set of Shimano mx.
Planning on swapping the DX 9/16 spindles to 1/2 from the Mx set..
I did have a go at spray them originally but just wasn't happy with the finish plus it was only £15 notes to get both sets done..:slayer:
-
Think the missus got it spot on to use the blue decals Ady, think the black would look good, but i have loads of pics with various plate set ups on this bike, including one pic of him running a front brake in a mall, maybe australia, but definetly blue vans decals and Mike had a tendancy to cut and mess around with decals, not sure if they did black skyway decals back then, but possible as there was loads of copy stickers produced back in the day, but my guess is blue.
Picture below shows black 1B plate with yet another decal layout, took at a skatepark in the UK, 84

Oh, if you want 1/2 DX spindles, would trade for your 9/16 if interested

It all depends which image he is building the bike to....in the first image they are definitely black!
-
The devil is n the detail... Love it fistblump
-
Yeah deeman, I see what saying, they do look black, but I think it's just the photo, if you look at the front comp3 which is blue , that also looks black aswell, just my thoughts👍, I'd still reckon they would be blue
-

Yup, I see what you are saying about the tyres. If you look at the image on here it is debatable on the colour of the decals, but if you save the image to your pics folder then zoom in on it, it is pretty clear they are black. Not that it REALLY matters, I feel a bit of a dick debating it tbh ; such a small detail! It is a shame that pic is taken in pretty poor light...must of been in the UK! :daumenhoch:
-
👍, ok mate , gonna be a cool build either way.

Had the same conversation with the missus and it is the photo .
There is a slight contrast in the photo with the black and blue and now decided to leave it as is now..
anyway..
Just finished the DX pedals going to upload later as knackered.. fistblump
Oh ..
nice pics Jay.. :daumenhoch:
Sorry but the 9/16 are fitted too the Mx now bud.. ::)
-
Managed to finish the Dx`s tonight .(and Mx too)
Stripped the Mx 1/2 spindles and swapped out the 9/16 fitted to the Dx.
Was surprised how small the Mx`s are to the DX`s and weight..
They was in a poor state both sets and originally I did paint them but didn't like the finish .
Had to strip them back and decided to get them powder coated.
Pics of set before..

Stripped them back again to find the powder coaters have powdered the bearing shells ::)
Had to carefully remove with a sharp tool as it was a bleeding nightmare to do.. :knuppel2:

Loving this thread mate, it's a lot more than just buying parts and slapping them on. Top work. :4_17_5:

Right then..
Time to build this puppy.. fistblump
The final part arrived the pad set from Steve (Cracking job mate)..
Here is a pic of the parts to complete this build..
I have stripped and refurbish most of the bits and now the best bit ... :coolsmiley:

Well.
made a start today fitting the tioga beartap 11 headset and suntour headlock..
To be honest I was having a nightmare fitting the bottom bearing shell which fits onto the forks..
It just would not fit.
I heated the part and again it just would not fit..
In the end I took the part of a set of Haro master forks and tried that.
At first it would not fit as I needed something solid to fit over the forks threads but wide enough to fit the bearing shell..
I the end had a brainwave (A first for me ::) ) I took one of the supporting legs of my bike building stand and a rubber mallet and a few taps it was in..
then called it a day.. :daumenhoch:

:LolLolLolLol:
Well..
One I bought cheap which was damaged due to someone over-tightening and just needed the bolt..
The second I bought was a bit faded and wasn't happy with.. ::)
The third is the one I used which needed a bolt..
-
It's gonna look brilliant ... Great attention to detail will make this build very special :daumenhoch:
-
Small update..
fitted the vectors today with the flex stiffener.
The bars was slightly to high at first had to remove a spacer from the headset and looks a bit better..
But might change to a tioga headset lock as its blue and chrome and easier to fit and sits not as high plus the suntour is a bugger to install and marks very easily to get a tight fit..
Its hard to see in the pic the correct headset lock but looks like the suntour??

Yeah Ady, he ran a blue suntour headlock, Tioga headset, blue Haro flex fighter
I thought it was that thanks bud.. fistblump
But I thought it was black the headlock in the pic.. :-\
Got a spare suntour headlock which needs Refurbing so will paint this blue to match..
-
little update..
Finished the seat today was in fair condition but had a few scuffs..
Very time consuming and a lot of patience with this so not to fook it up..
Got some very fine wet and dry Starting with 600 at first to remove the scuffs.
The worst ones I had to use a stanley blade but I found dragging the blade with water at a 90* angle was better than slicing action.
Then lots of patience going up the grades 1000/1200/1500 and the final 2000 to finsh off.
I found the plastic to be scuff free but had a white residue .
I used some G3 paint renovator cream ( or t cut) and lots of.. :bellend:...
It came up a treat..
Bit of mothers on the seat guts and decals from Del job done.. fistblump

Cheers Mr D... fistblump

great job Ady on the seat, regards to the headlock, Its really hard to pick out the colour on this from any pics, so make your own mind up on it, just my opinion on it ?. Its interesting to see the black chainring bolts on that bike, never seen that before, so probably he changed things over the time he rode it anyway.

explosion indeed Ady. :4_17_5:

Another thing i keep meaning to change on mine is the Vector bar decals, both Mikes and Bobs had older decals on, not the signature decals, I think Del does them if you have not bought any yet. You might be able to see from this picture what i mean.

What is the story with the first gen sport here. Was this Mikes bike..? Where did it come from..?

What is the story with the first gen sport here. Was this Mikes bike..? Where did it come from..?
All I know it was originally from the UK possibly left from one of the Haro team members .
It was probably cheaper back then to sell than return it back to the USA..
I got it from a great member on here .
It was listed by someone else on here a couple of years back originally but didn't sell ..
At some stage over the years it was re-painted orange :knuppel2:
He has a great collection who had it before the both of us who ever he is.. fistblump

The detail is amazing, the bike turned out awesome ....and the best thing is.....you can ride the crap out of it, cuz you know, when the blue tyres are done, you can replace them with black ones ......oops i'm just jealously nitpicking : :D: in one of the top build-threads
