Hey Tim, is Pike Mardon still living in Perth, Australia?
He's been up in Geraldton for the last 4 years.

Somehow I persuaded the parents to replace the greenhouse with this..
Wow, judging from the steels, that looks purpose built rather than ghetto! where did they get it from Tim?
That half-pipe originally came from Southport skatepark (late seventies) then made it's way to the top of the start hill at Chorley BMX track and eventually to mine around 1983 for the grand sum of £50. It came surfaced in knackered fibreglass panels so I ripped that off and bolted timber across the width followed by a layer of ply and added a vert extension one side and a platform on the other. Happy days!

You're 'stylin' in the Vans 95's too! I always knew you were a man of good taste,Marty. 8)
-
So the year is 1981,I'm sixteen & still heavily into skateboarding and only aware of the upcoming phenomenon that is BMX through reading Trials & Motocross News....
Until I bump into a neighbourhood kid riding a red Sentinel Scorpion TX with yellow Skyways. I COULD NOT believe my eyes. fat/skinny tyres,mag wheels,Kashimax MX seat,Tange TX1200 forks and a mangalloy frame. I had to have one.
Two weeks later and I get a phone call from my older brother that worked on Deansgate in Manchester,where all the motobike dealers were. In the window of ACE Motocycles was a blue & yellow Scorpion SX complete with a Suntour Holeshot derailleur,
on sale for £99. I had to have it! I had £100 in premium bonds and to my total surprise my parents agreed to let me cash 'em in.
[attachment=1]
What's the first thing you do when the bike's taken out of the van? You stick your brother's Bell Moto 3 on and see how she handles!

Pretty soon all kinds of shops started stocking bmx bikes,from Halfords to small,local car parts/accessories dealers and even Antique dealers! Case in point was Curbishleys Antiques on the A6 heading out of Stockport. He stocked Redline and Kuwahara 'completes' and gave over one half of his shop windows to display them. The carpark at the rear was where we set up a jump ramp...

[attachment=1]
I rode the Scorpion for about 12-18 months before,one day, a mate's dad backed over it in his drive. To say I was gutted was an understatement. With the bike not insured and no money the chances of getting a replacement looked bleak. That's when my older brother stepped in and said that he'd lend me the £300 for the new bike. Result !
Being an avid reader of Bicycle Motocross Action since '81 there was only one bike for me. A phone call to Surrey Skateboards and a custom-order ball burnished PK Ripper was placed.
-
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
To quote BMX Action... this bike was "dialed" ! Everything about it met my expectations. The frame geometry was perfect. The Landing Gear forks were insane! Blue coaster Skyways,Maxy Cross cranks,Shimano DX pedals,blue anno Suntour stem,Elina Lightning Bolt seat,DC MX1000's and Renthal bars with Oakley .5 grips.
I was now set for learning some serious freestyle.

This is a photo from a demo/bmx fun day we did in '85 with M/cr city council's recreational services dept with a view to building a permanent facility. The place was a disused field called Tweedle HIll Tip in Blackley,north Manchester. We set up a temporary bmx track using hay bails and plywood tabletop jumps for the local kids and supplied a dozen low-end bmx bikes for them to use for free for the day. A great turnout with the kids having a blast,only to be interupted that afternoon by a protest by the kid's mothers saying that they would fight the proposal of a bmx track being built there! Much to the embarrassment of their off-spring that were riding that day. You couldn't make it up. ;D

In the spring of 1985 I got the go-ahead from my boss at Manchester City Council to build a state of the art half-pipe in one of the squash courts at the Ardwick Sports Centre. I'd already acquired the ramp plans from the U.S. the year before so we were all set to make the leap from home-made backyard ramps to a pro-rated vert ramp.

Love em, I sent a couple to my mates. Still got a Torker one left.
I don't think I saw the Torker one but I did send the Raleigh Mike Pardon one to his son for his birthday. :)
