Stephen Dalet.  Only I seem to remember him. Meanwhile Gardens and Rom regular, always rode with Marco Lara.  If there'd been a definition of tech back in 82-83, then it would have been a picture of him   :4_17_5:

Rob was this the guy who used to hang out in Alpine action in Notting Hill? Was in BMX action bike with another guy, both in Haro gear doing tailwhips? Feature on the first Potts mod bolts.

Also
Chris Young
Rob Bell
Paul Davies? (Pikey)

God Damn!!!!!!   That might just be him!  It's the old innertube tied around the seat thats giving him away to me, that was one of his tricks to help with 'suicide' kickturns and rampstalls.

Chris Young is around kinda,   not sure about Rob Bell, I rode with him a fair bit when he was at Rom early days. Pikey Paul Davies was riding well into the 90s, at my vert ramp, leigh on sea, Radlands, Wakefield and a lot of those other mid school parks.  Still had a killer bunnyhop on him  :)

If it wasn't for the fact I'd get a doin' from Aileen for being on the computer ALL the time - I'd be up for it!!!
The only reason I've been able to get so many pics up on this thread is 'cos I've been off work with the flu for the past few days!

Oh and Donovin Ritter makes a special appearance on Mike D's Myspace page.
 :daumenhoch:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=68960522 (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=68960522)

If anybody has spent any time with Fiola they would know where Donovan was coming from here.

that is the first time I have heard somebody talk the truth about fiola. Fiola told me the Donovan story but not the way Donovan told it and now it makes sense. Fiola was a small minded ego maniac and hated anybody that was better than him and there were quite a few that he had it in for.

He even started a fight with Dave Breed who was a very nice bloke and about 6'2 and Dave just pushed him away and said grow up.

He started on Glynn Lewis when we went out for a meal and he exploded on me for nothing and I nearly killed him  (ask djbenice). It is sad but a man who was so many peoples hero was a complete c0ck. I think he may have had an altitude problem.

I hear you Andy - all starts to make sense after reading Donovans story. I alwayswondered why he won so many times when he obviously wasn't the best on the day.
I would have liked to see him pick on Glyn! I've seen Glyn take someone out and it wasn't pretty! Fiola would have been toast!
Hero to zero.

you're a legend gary. absolutely superb pics. i'm gonna have to try a few more obscure names and see if you can rise to the challenge.

i don't think i've seen a single pic of denton since the last time i saw him about 18 years ago.
i got to know denton through gareth swan, who's house i stayed at a few times. i remember in my very early days of competing i stayed at swanny's house for a week before a comp. i rode everyday with swanny and denton. it done me the world of good and really helped me progress. both of them were excellent riders.

gary, do you have any pics of swanny? i know denny has some.

i can see phil bevan and karl denton. rode with phil loads at cardiff warehouse 1986-1988, penarth rd warehouse 1989 and then phils halfpipe in mynachdy, cardff 1989- 1990. phil actually took some of us welsh lads for our first beer at 15 years old in merthyr (nite before merthyr open comp). walked thru the pub with our bmx's
(phil, me, evo, tomo, swanny, nipper, jon cole- andy reardon and swannys dad were already there playing pool) and the landlord said to leave em in the toilets. had me first cider and a ride thru the mental hospital at midnite. more malarky from bevan and his mates than i care to tell but was a fun nite.  ;)

No, no, no.......   Marco will never be forgotten.  Rode with him throughout  82-84.  You're right, a hero to us all.  He turned up at Rom in the late 90s on a tricked out new Ripper with his son, both riding the moguls.  He promised me he would become a regular but sadly never did  :'(

I have a photo somewhere of him doing the first ever 540 in Roms Performance Bowl.  And I do mean the first one ever   :4_17_5:

Also invented the Gyro. Patented it and got $1 for every Gyro sold. When you think about every budget bmx that came with one...
He recently bought a $7m house.

Ollie Matthews is now into surfing and apparently no longer rides...

Zach Shaw and Gerry Galley bumped into him.....

Ollie made a remark about still riding kids bikes...  :-\

apparently, Gerry had to be held back!!  ::)

He was a good rider Ollie and I wouldn't have expected him to have come out with a remark like that  :idiot2:

Strangely enough - went down the skatepark for a wee spin about on Saturday, then headed to the nearest bar. Hadn't even got to the place when a loud voice called my name. It was Timmins with Andy Burke, Big Sid and Rab - out on the lash! Ended up goin' to a few pubs with them before headin' home about 11.30pm! AND Aileen hit a roadworks barrier and wiped out on the way back! Cycling pub crawls - can't beat 'em!!!

Man flu still buggin' me AND I think I broke my wee toe on my left foot last night - caught it on a box - duh! It never rains, but it pours....

I know what you mean - rode with a coaster for a while, on quarters too, but got spat off a few times as well- jumping up a kerb of all things, over the bars and headfirst into a hedge! Coasters bite!

I never had a problem with a coaster but if I had known how easy it was without one I would never have bothered. I think we were scared of not being able to do 540 kickturns and rollback 540's but I have done them with a freewheel now.

I did realise and drilled the coaster out of my Tuffs (!) and put a freehub in instead - went a lot higher after that!  :LolLolLolLol:

Funnily enough - used to pull rollback 540's all the time on a freewheel - but havin' trouble gettin past 360 now!
Old age settin' in.....!

Never stopped mate, although I did stagnate a bit!
Still doing the same tricks I was 20 years ago!
Only time I wasn't riding was for nearly a year after my bike got nicked. Apart from that, it's been 1983 to present day.
Thinking about getting a new bike soon as well!

No ideas Dave, I'm in touch with Dave S but not heard anything from Ell for years. I've asked James Hudson and he doesn't see him anymore so no joy. There was a guy on here ages ago that used to ride at the Hudson's ramp when I used to go there and he was still in touch with Sean Allinson so I was hoping he could have found out if Sean knew what he was up to these days.

Other than that I've no ideas. He may come on here and not post or want to get involved, some do, not sure why but they do.  :-\

It'd be good to catch up with him, we once had a little fall out at Alfreton over nothing but we still spoke after that.

its all swings and roundabouts. the ukbfa rule book states you would get marked down for presentation- ie. not wearing uniform, bike looking in a state, etc. then years later the street look is in, pottys rather than full face, etc. and you get marked down/ lose your credability for wearing a full face on street, etc.  :idiot2:.

I,well,my dad thought of a good rider but cant remember his bloody name. His nickname was Biff and he rode Romford. He was the mad head who jumped from the quarter pipe to the balcony at holeshot back in 86/87.
Another good rider was Jason Hall(Baz).Rode for halfords years ago but was amazing on vert.He crashed in a UKBFA contest in Poole missing the 5ft wide quarter.

Well! I'm glad someone finally mentioned Mike Canning....although he kinda rode for Skyway & we all knew he was amazing, I'm sure he got the short end of ths stick behind Neil, Craig & Carlo.......The guy was ahead of his time! remember Hoffmans Indian Air Candybar...Thats was a Canning creation, he called it the "Turkish Delight"...Get it? Indian canybar. ..pretty smart in my opinion. The guy was ahead of his time. Laidlaw, Guillote, Reynolds & Brown too....some of my best friends at the time.

Here's our boy Dave Slade....He's doing pretty well for himself. I'm stoked for him

I just figured there was SO many people that didn't get the credit they deserved! My opener was a perfect example, nobody mentions Donovan Ritter these days and the guy was awesome! As we all know Mike D was way ahead of his time and DR was around at the same time as Fiola, Sigur, Dominguez etc. etc. but he NEVER gets a name check, weird!

never met noel back in the day but met him a few years back when the 'dirty sanchez ' mtv started being filmed. (grew up with the sanchez boys as did mark j on here) noel worked as part of the film crew and was in cardiff for a fair few months. he did bring his s&m dirtbike down but with me working and them filming all over the uk we never got the chance to ride together. did party together though a few times. will dig out some pics soon.

ah, just remembered i scanned and printed noels 2 page spread from rad/action bike onto a t shirt and passed onto his producer to wear. ha. they didnt know he was that good on a bike bitd. ha.  brought back memories for him. i'm sure he's in my myspace friends greg.

Some riders would make every body at a comp stop what they were doing and watch...
Eric was one of those...

er... well yeah... because judging by these video's they knew he was going to fall off his bike almost immediately got on it!

Did he ever make a trick?... staying on your bike was generally considered the hard bit! ... not being funny, but if I spun my granny round and round enough and then set her off in the direction of a quarter pipe I reckon she could do just as well...!

Stop being so cynical Ralph  :LolLolLolLol:

I know what you mean though dude. I've said it in the past, when he wasn't trying to launch himself in to space he could do some stylish airs. His lookbacks were pretty clicked, mainly because he was dorky footed, but still clicked.

Eric probably did crash more than most, but thats because he always pushed the hardest.

Eric was the first person I ever saw pull a 540... about 4 feet out on a skinny UKBFA quarter-pipe!
Also probably the first person to pull a bike hand plant on vert.
Yeah, he crashed a lot but the videos online don't do him justice.
Thanks for the pics Andy, love the one-footer invert.

It's riders like Eric Steel pushing the limits back in the day why we have young punx pulling big tricks and getting gold medals in the X games today. foam pits? I don't think so, riders like Eric Steel trying and crashing, are those who progressed the sport to what it is today. And he was a cool guy.  :coolsmiley:

Definitely. I'd only met him a couple of hours before my cable adjuster broke at a Southsea KOC, rendering the brake useless. He spotted it, said he'd a spare I could have, next thing we're down the road rummaging around amongst the tools and spares in his car boot. Cool isn't the word!

From the outside, I can totally see why you're sayin' that Ralph, but Eric eventually became an awesome rider.
(What do I mean 'eventually'!! Anyone that did what he did back then WAS awesome - just for tryin' it!! :LolLolLolLol:)

To me the old comps ('84 - '88) that I went too/competed in  were just the most amazing events 'cos someone like Eric or Mr. Spicoli and various others would try something insane. Even tried the odd thing myself....

Eric DID crash a lot BITD, but later on, as he smoothed it all out, he was brilliant - look at that pic of the 1 foot invert- drop crank, fully stretched and inverted -  his lookbacks were awesome, but he still went for the mad things - the twists, the handplants, and I f@ckin' loved 'im for it!
Long Live Crazy Eric!!  :LolLolLolLol:

When Eric turned up at our little bmx club with his brother Scott...

I watched him throw the most dialed 540 i'd seen... 6 ft out, perfect rotation... smooth too!!

you just don't get as dialed as that if your're just a ' hopless rider ' who just goes for mad stuff...

I thought Eric was a Great rider and as it 's already been mentioned earlier in the thread...

these video's do not do the man justice!!!

Just looked at these pics, the one with eric dropping in from Rom's half pipe wall, thats me standing by his back wheel in the blue body warmer, showing him how to do it! I remember this day. Eric sure was a laugh, i'd quit riding by the time he got 'polished' shame, wish i got to see him ride like that.

I remember Marco. He used to ride a lot at Talakers & Cantelose skate parks (not sure how you spell them, I'm from round them parts). I think I first met him in 81, a proper nutter. He was the first person I ever saw do a back flip. Wiped out but it was still good to see.
What ever happened to him?

i can see phil bevan and karl denton. rode with phil loads at cardiff warehouse 1986-1988, penarth rd warehouse 1989 and then phils halfpipe in mynachdy, cardff 1989- 1990. phil actually took some of us welsh lads for our first beer  at 15 years old in merthyr (nite before merthyr open comp). walked thru the pub with our bmx's
(phil, me, evo, tomo, swanny, nipper, jon cole- andy reardon and swannys dad were already there playing pool) and the landlord said to leave em in the toilets. had me first cider and a ride thru the mental hospital at midnite. more malarky from bevan and his mates than i care to tell but was a fun nite.  ;)
