Title: North East Tracks
Post by: Bigplinky on October 19, 2008, 10:19 AM
Following on from Paul Grays excellent work on the South Bank and Guisborough I thought I'd scan a few of my pics in and see if we could get a thread going with a pic of every North East track that were raced at BITD. Yes all the pics have me in them I don't have any that don't, if that makes sense  ???

Darlington going over what used to be the first berm until the track was extended and it was then a 6' jump to flt landing (the only jump I bent a Flite crank spindle on BITD). Grahm Thornton 2NE

Powder Monkey Track in Wallsend Newcastle. Defo one of my favourite tracks BITD the doubles on the second last, downhill straight, were Huge and had a mega fast landing into a big catcher berm ( probably one of the fastest secections of track in the country)

Saltburn By The Sea. Stange little track in a muddy field but did seem to have a lot of club races there. Racing Paul Sturrock down the first straight coming off the drop off that was the start hill.

Against Roy Barker on the second straight

And some dodgy little doubles in the 3rd straight (think that's a dead sailor look back  ;D)

The South Back. Not much more to be said about this place it was awesome

JJ name those riders in one

Whickham Thorns (Kellogg's track) in Gateshead

The famous first doubles 1985 region (Andy Smith on the Profile and Clarts on the DP)

and crashing over them with Tony "Gladis" Gladstone coming past to take the win. The track had two start hills so could be run in either direction.

Tow Law. Only raced there once and it was bloody cold. Steve James on the GHP cruiser

Teeside Airport. Lovely little U in U had nationals there but it was really too small for them (Steve Grieves behind)

Washington. One of the North Easts earliest tracks along with Guisborough. Excellent down hill first 2 straights into two of the best 180 berms around but them just turned into a muddy field. (PK6061 lend me your pics so I can get them scanned in)

And a funny one Doncaster used to be in the North East along with Nottingham  :LolLolLolLol:

Also a quick mention for Bradford, you had to work to get to the first turn, uphill, but it was worth it for the downhill run afterwards

Great Pics Andy, I think Tow Law is now a MX track or it was at some time. No pics of Church St or Crimdon Dene. I remember Crimdon had a whoop section of around 20 whoops  wasnt a regional track i dont think but it was a while ago  :LolLolLolLol:

That second pic is one of my all time favorite Pics Daz, shame they aint more from Phills Track. I used to ride all the way from Manor on my Silver fox to church street aged about 9  :smitten: then pop into Phills to look at the Skyways

Post by: Bigplinky on October 19, 2008, 12:42 PM
Church Street ruled. The table top and doubles were great but it didn't half get rough after the 2nd turn when you entered the Valley of the berms (oh there were no good jumps in that bit so the rocks never got moved to one side).

Paul, the whoops at Crimdon Dean were just ripples in the sand mate  :LolLolLolLol: Truely one of the worst tracks of all time  ;D

Them doubles at Church st. Andy were the ones which truly claimed the front end on that piece of S**t frame of Darkies, I remember bouncing the front wheel into the second one coming up short just before we rode along to that Quarter pipe which I died on when the front end came off as I landed ooops.... some great pics there tho mate

Yup it was them doubles that claimed the Darkey "special"  ;D. I remember slipping my pedal over them and doing the only one foot Leary I've ever done and amazingly rode out of it  :)

One other good thing about the pool was waiting for the train to come into the station and 5-10 people heading off the start hill in quick order so they were all in the air when the train was next to the table top

Brilliant pics Andy, I raced at most of those tracks, Powder Monkey was super smooth and fast, the big doubles were BIG for BITD but a lot easier than they looked.
Good to see two my me old mates, Paul Sturock and Roy Barker, but bet they weren't to happy about been beat by a young un like you
Can't remember the valley of berms and don't think I raced at Washington but think I did Tow Law, it's in the Arctic circle I believe.

Actually I'm not certain about this first pic, it looks like the doubles at the end of the first straight but the surface looks wrong. What you think?

Those Redcar pics fookin rule, that first one looks so fookin fast! who is the number 2 plate? makes me wish I raced in 87  :-[

I remember in about 84 at Northallerton Roy took me around the town in his Rally prepped MK2 Escort it was awesome, absolute nutter that boy. I think me and Stuzzer are racing each other because nobody else turned up in our age groups that day.

Raced once (maybe twice) at Teesside airport and I remember the very first meeting after it had tanked down, the track was flooded, but the meeting went ahead anyway dodging puddles. The reason I write this is it lead to a pic in BMX Action mag that always sticks in my mind of Johnny Mckinney sliding in the wet and water spraying everywhere.
When was saltburn running and did I ride there?..... Paul will know :D

What was the name of that other track up that way?  Waverdale? South Shields?  Went to a UKBMX national there, probably 86.  Can never remember the name...have seen only one pic of that place on here.

Church St was the first place I ever really rode a bike off road, age about 6 or 7.  I can't remember much about it but I do recall being too scared to ride down the starthill.  Seems not much has changed since then really.

Pitty about the track too, now a partial bridge / failed bus station project.

That's it Paul, didn't know it was still there I was told years ago it had been built on. I'll have to go over and have a look  ;D Bet it's used for motobikes now though.

Don't know why the map say's Whickham it's actually in Wallsend, totally opposite ends of town

Just had a look for the Powder Monkey but it looks like that has been bulldozed, which is a real pity as I went there 4 years ago and it was still half decent  :-[

Another memory comes flooding back  ;D, have you still got them mags Keith?, I'd love to see that picture again. I was racing at Saltburn before I won that trip to the USA so I would have been 16, that makes it about 84.  I can't remember if you raced there or not. Here's the google maps link if it helps.

Cool Scott  :daumenhoch:

That Gateshead track is Windy Nook which wound down quite a steep hill that just by the name you could tell it was pretty exposed  ;D had to HUGE (as I remember) speed jumps in the first straight which my sister cracked her Race inc over at the first meeting there also was a rumour somebody had a really bad neck injury at the first meet. Just had a look on Google maps looks like it has gone as well.

The Newcastle one is Weaverdale.

I remember that first jump at Southbank been huge it looks tiny in that photo  ;D

And it's great to see the easiest gate in the world to jump again at Teeside  >:D

Those Windy Nook berms were well funny always covered in big lumps of dolly I seem to remember the fastest line was to stick to the tyres on the inside  ;D

Good pics JP  :daumenhoch:

Post by: jonpaul11 on October 31, 2008, 10:01 PM
you're right Andy, was always best to stick to the inside... I remember Scarborough track being the worst for big lumps of dolly... fast downhill and lumpy as fook.

I've asked my mum to dig out some more pics as I don't have them down here.
Was talking with my dad last night and he remebers you well along with Gladis, Clarts, Nelly, Dave Young, Paul Grey, jay parker (my dad remembers him as The Flying Snot), Flash etc. brought back a few memories last night on the phone.

Next pic is not really old school but another I have down here, me in the woods in Low Fell, Summer of 96 on my Schwinn. All around gateshead tracks bar Powder Monkey at that time were pretty unrideable. I've had BMX after BMX from the age of 11... I can still be seen around the City of London on one now.

Well I chatted to him for about ten minutes and like most of us he has good memories of BITD. He told me his address in Guisborough but I forgot the bloody house number so I might have to knock at a few doors down his street to find him again  :-[. One bit of bad news, his lass chucked all of his old gear after a domestic, including all his photo's  :10_2_12:, as you can imagine he is devastated. Also he's not on the web at the moment so he's unlikely to turn up here any time soon. I'd love to see him at the track again as well, told him you were still competing so who knows  :)

Hi Steve,

Your name rings a bell, if you where racing Tuck then you must have been an age group above me so we must have raced together in 17+ or Superclass. It's funny and a bit worrying but I can't hardly remember a thing about racing Superclass, only the odd snippet, must be all the blows to head I've had  :buck2:. Take a look over at the new Hartlepool track at Summer Hill if you get chance, things have changed a bit.

Andy Lincoln says you had a GHP, not many of them about BITD. Something is stirring in my memory, need a few days to think, the old memory circuits sometimes come back to life

I think they are from a year or two earlier - Darlo changed their first jump to become some weird sort of doubles before 86, as you're all down on the ground in that pic I'd say it was earlier...

I raced at Windy Nook quite a few times and I mainly remember it being cold and windy, didn't it have a killer table top that used to keep the St.Johns people busy?

I raced there lots BITD but I don't think I've ever seen a photo of the place. Some one gave me a Redline race jersey  :smitten: at Northallerton (it could have been Roy's mom Ann) and I felt like Stu.

Also a quick mention for Bradford, you had to work to get to the first turn, uphill, but it was worth it for the downhill run afterwards

I remember that South Bank track, I'm sure the berms had concrete lips around the top.

Shame it's not there now, I work just over the road ::)

I just found this on Youtube (thanks to Dale Holmes) it's the third Southbank track which I designed but never rode.

/>
It was situated here, over the road from the cart track in the corner next to the compound with the parked cars.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=54.579387,-1.186346&spn=0.002776,0.00677&t=h&z=18

Good track that Paul, and it looks very fast (plenty of room to get as few pedals in) ;)

I wish I could come on here one day and someone had either posted some pics or a video of the first South-Bank track.

(a bit further down from the go-cart track is the home of the mighty....Redcar Bears speedway team)  :daumenhoch:

WICKED PICS..i remember racing at guisbrough in the early 80's with kellys heroes.
Jumping at the KIOSK(bottom of marsden bank in south shields)which was brilliant cos all me m8s used to
go there as well(being from marsden it was very handy)and it wasnt long before we were jumping over ALL
of the rubbish bins wich were scattered along the cliffs.
But best of all was riding at the CENTRAL LIBRARY IN SOUTH SHIELDS.2 wicked ramps+every bmx'er in south shields was there every nite, getting chased off the cops was a added bonus(com on fatty,as we'd rockwalk past some fat cop).
And last but def not least was the very first trick ramp+the quarter pipe at the MOTORCYCLE CENTRE IN MAXWELL STREET.
HERE'S MY CLAIM TO FAME MY DAD,JIM ROBSON ACTUALLY BUILT THE TRICK RAMP(EXACT SPEC AS IN BOB HARO'S FREESTYLE MOVES),WHILE HE WAS WORKING FOR DAVE WHINFIELD,WHO OWNED THE MOTORCYCLE CENTRE AT THE TIME,THEN NOT LONG AFTER THE QUARTER PIPE WAS BUILT.(not by me dad though). But it was the very first q-pipe we'd ever ridden.(nowt like the pipes these days, that was lethel, but bob rode the same so who were we to argue...

I helped built a quarter pipe once with my mates Keith, Adam and Nick. We used whatever bits of wood we could get our hands to build the frame and then used hardboard for the riding surface. Imagine four teenage lads with hammers six inch nail loads of wood and enthusiasm, it was a proper ramshackle backyard quarter pipe. The idea was to keep it outside Nick and Adams house but it took about five seconds for the neighbours to start whingeing so we had to saw it in half down the middle from top to bottom so we could get it in the backyard and then bolt it back together again when we wanted to use it. Great times  :LolLolLolLol:

Wish we took a photo  :'(

Quiz question. Can anyone identify the fifth rider in this photo ? look hard now, who is hiding?

Woppa, Flemdog, Geth, myself and who else?

Trev Stamford, just behind you...only one with that shape helmet in Pro at that time.

*smartarse*

I thought it might be Jamie but think you're right going on that bit of helmet, you can also see a bit of front wheel, a bit of trouser leg with Haro? written on it and maybe a bit of number plate.

Another mystery solved

26       ?
382     Paul Gray
06       Alan Batty
250     Roy Barker
1         John Longstaff
67       ?
4         ?

Kev O'Connor is in the back ground between me and Alan.

I think I spot Nick Fields in the background? all in Red.

It was hard work getting that 45/16 gearing going but could spin it out on the long first straight  :4_17_5:

Welcome back Matt and thanks for posting the photo's.

I remember you by name but can't remember what you look like  :-[. Good to see some photos of Cliff racing, he  loved his BMX but was never much good, I did a lot of motorcycling with him in later years and was a super fast and well respected road rider on his R1.

Has anyone got a photo of Saltburn in the dry?

Has anyone on here got any photo's of Gavin Bottomley or Carl Wetherall, they both rode Kuwahara BITD.

Another rider I remember won the money race that Ian Johnson staged at Prissick aroundbout 85? There was a big show on the playing fields with loads of things going on and Ian got the Herlingshaw ramps and marked out a track on the grass with cones, so it was Herlingshaw on grass. I think there was £100 for first, I think I came third, John Longstaff of Johnsons Jets might have come second and the lad that won rode for Tuckers Tornados. Can anyone remember who the was, he was a tall thin lad (like we all where) with blond hair and I think he wore white black and yellow Aero pants and a Tuckers top, I can remember him well but I can't think of his name. He was a year or two younger than me, any suggestions?

If the picture was wide screen Gary Prosser would be on the outside.

Yup it was either a club race (last round of the winter club champs?) or a regional the week before the 84 National alot of people raced two age groups that day so they could have a go a Ruffell (me included). I was happy as fook beat him in the second moto  ;D (Paul your a year out with the age groups everybody is + 1 year)

I see Roy Barkers name in a few replys here.  I bump into Roy from time to time - think he's got a little OS bike colletion going - Hutch or two.  His lad rides down our little skate park sometimes, not a bad rider ither- havent seen him for a while though.  Roy used to pop up to ape skate park on a GT when it was open.  I used to drool over Roys bike bitd - he was the first to get a set of CWs in town too I seem to remember, haha.

Damn it! Why can't I remember?  :tickedoff:  :2funny: Something about racing two age groups rings a bell, I fact I think I can recall that, but there's nothing about the race, maybe I got my arse kicked in the final and I erased the memory  :-\  who knows?

Beating Ruff back then was a great result  :daumenhoch: and those Nolan N19 helmets were quite popular
