What is this poss 70's Repco?
« on: January 18, 2014, 06:14 PM »
Hey, I'm pretty new to thebsite and I'm wondering if I can get some help ID this bike. Now... I've done a bit of research and it looks like a Repro monoshock. However is has a "Raleigh of South Africa" badge on it. The guy I bought it off says he got it in 85 when he lived in South Africa. Any help with this would be great thanks Rob

It is not a Repco, 3 reasons why...

1)  Repco's have a distinctive bend/kink in the top tube which I cannot see on yours.
2)  The front gusset on Repco's are not welded all the way along, Repco's have a gap in the welding.
3)  The obvious bit, that Raleigh badge is riveted on from factory, so I would look along the Raleigh timeline for the same frame.

It is a nice bike though, I like that a lot.

Thanks for the reply, it does have a curve towards the rear of the top tube, sorry for the rubbish pics, I think the sticker is in the way of the curve.I will put some closer pics of the frame up tomorrow. It's like no Raleigh I've seen before but never looked at their bikes for foreign markets. Hmmm

EDIT: I see what you mean about the weld on the gusset, just googled it.

I did wonder if that sticker was in the way  ;D

Other than the weld on the gusset it looks identical to a Repco I agree.

I've taken the nasty decals off, here is a better pic of the curve in the top tube.

That's nice that. Doesn't look like it needs much doing to it.

It could do with a bit paint but depends on if I decide to go restoration or survivor. I sure will keep you informed and yes it weighs a ton! It also needs tyres/tubes and new brakes.

Please leave it as a survivor, to refinish that bike would be an absolute travesty.

Give it a rub with the oily rag   :daumenhoch:

Haha looks like survivor is the way to go then! well I've just give her a bath And got so much crap off it, also took  the prostar decals off as they didn't belong on there I'd reckon. I'd like to change the saddle as it's off an excercise bike I was told, I'm thinking along the lines of a rampar saddle as they look nice but no idea of price? When's she's dry I'm going to try and find a frame number.

I like the saddle personally, my LRV Moxie has one along the similar lines.

Ah your bike looks cool. Right, the frame number is CPX-02-23257 so that leads me to believe Peugeot check out the CPX 310 I think it is, it still doesn't explain the Raleigh headbadge and parts, maybe Peugeot made them for Raleigh South Africa??

That would make some sense, as the Raleigh Mixte was also sold abroad as a Peugeot Mixte.

A lot of manufacturers swapped models bitd.

It is a lovely bike you have though, if you are not keeping hold of it please let me know as I would love that with my other 70's bikes.

Ah right I see. I'm afraid she's staying as I think chances of finding another would be very slim.  I wonder what the model of it was called as being sold by Raleigh? How could I find out?  IF I do ever decide to sell I'll let you know.
