Went the citric acid route, never tried it before so it was a bit of an experiment.

Tested first on the fork legs:

After a day

After a full bath

Redline 401s

GT bars

Beartrap headset

Hutch Stem

Odyssey Gyro

Even the Chain

It looked alot better in the photos than in real life unfortuately... the top of the fork legs pretty much are back metal and the tight spots on the frame too. So I ended up doing the unspeakable and had it totally dechromed so that it wouldnt flake off under the powder coat. (recommended by SBD)

And since it'll be a one shot powder coat (limited colour) it had to be done...

The stem was chrome... with nice green stuff growing on it.

I had it stripped and polished. That being said I won't be using it on this build.  Ive a GT SR mallet stem ready to go on.

Can the chrome stripping be a diy job or a specialist as I've previously stayed away from items I've wanted with peeling chrome.

Yours has turned out really good

Funnily enough I had no plans for the Hutch stem, but then I took a chance on one of the raffle that occur on the Facebook groups from time to time and actually won an OG candy red Hutch Trickstar frame and fork!

But that'll be another story once this PFT is out of the way.

But couldn't resist a quick build with bits I had lying around.

I can't take any credit for the stem, I left it in to a guy to have it polished. A guy called Mark Smith, not sure if he's on here.

It's the actual chrome that I was wondering how to remove or did the same bloke who polished it do that also.

I'm not on FB so that's flown over my head sorry but looks a tidy TS

He removed it too, think he sanded it off, rather than chemically though

Happy enough with the finish, especially considering how I got it. And all the bolts are the same ones

If you take the stem to a chromers, they will remove the flaking chrome for you. Some, dependent on their expertise, will also re-chrome it for you, which in my opinion, but not to bash the job done this one in this thread, is far better than polished  :daumenhoch:
