The tuffs on this bike where in a right state. Anyway these had a good old rub down with some Cif. And then a session with the bleach. Here are a couple of pics with one before and one after.

They turned out reasonably well but after reading a thread on here about aqua blasting I decided to have mine done.
I must say the results were amazing.

They have since been built up with the original axles and hardwear with lots of new grease. They run super smooth.

I know we talked about the auqa blasting and it's merits over sand/hand finish - they look super sweet and far better than i could do by hand

did they go over the alloy hub or was it rubbed up clean by hand ?

The aqua blasting was done by a guy in Colchester. If I remember right it was cc aqua blasting. There are only a handful of people that do this around the country. It was expensive but the results were amazing and I got to keep the original tuffs.

After the recent stourport ride out these tuffs rode great.
It's a shame the tuff pads were crap. The brakes were poor to say the least.

More homework required on getting the right brake blocks. In either clear or white.

the skyway freestyle pads are very good , the normal tuff pads are dire , might as well use plasticine

They cost me £100 to get them both aqua blasted. It took the guy 2 hours while I watched him. I must say even though it was expensive it was worth it to me so I kept the original tuffs from the bike. Also I quite enjoyed chatting to the guy and learning about the process involved.

It is basically a very fine glass bead (looks like fine powder) that is sprayed out of a nozzle mixed with water. This is inside a tank with two sleeves/gloves. So you can hold the piece with one hand. And hold the nozzle with the other. The mixture of powder/water is filtered so you can circulate it to use again.

These tuffs were the first plastic items this guy had done so the price was probably high due to it being a bit of an experiment. But the results speak for themselves. Also the guy that owns/does the aqua blasting had a genuine interest in my restoration of bmx's and even told me his brother restores burners.
