i think on the black ones the paint on the raised shimano logo was ground down to bare metal?

Yea your right there Bob. Its gonna be fun getting that looking right after powder. Hope they turn out better than the Nippon brakes I just did, had to repaint the names in after painting the arms. Hmm, they look really nice now, lol. They were worth about £30 when I started, now worth about 30p! Gotta laugh....... ;D
