This year has carried on where last left off with work and i have hardly any time to blow my nose let alone do anything bmx related.
As an antidote i have decided to give myself a little lunchbreak project to break up the day.
The wood neck bike rack was fun so another stem project seems to be the order of the day. With this in mind the first thing to do is find a donor stem shaft.
I have used those cheap suntour copy stems, off the bay, with great success in the past but with the supply of them drying up Bert was kind enough to send me one for nowt ( thanks again Bert

)

First up is carefully cutting a slot in the back of the stem just shy of going through to the shaft then prying the slot open to release the shaft

Next i ordered some 6082 aluminium off the bay, These two pieces are 2 inch wide, 3/4 inch thick and were cut to 100mm long.
They cost around £8 for both

Will keep updating this thread as the stem comes on but thats it for the first lunchbreak

So realising i need a new 7mm drill bit i thought i would have a quick look round the usual places last night to save me driving round everywhere. Gutted is all i can say!!!

Turns out screwfix had a computer glitch yesterday morning and EVERYTHING online was priced at £34.99!
Bobbins if you only want a drill bit but some fookers were buying garden rooms originally at £3.5k and ride on lawn mowers at £1500

Would have been so nice to restock the workshop, they honoured it all too

Nah, I only make parts for old stems, not repoops,your one off project looks pretty cool

Day 2 on the project and potential disaster averted

I have always suspected my cheap looking new vice was slightly untrue so decided to test it before i started drilling any important holes. Sure enough it was out a fair way from base to bed and as the base is easier to access i set about it with the disc sander

The polished looking bits are my efforts and the deep grooves are the original finish. ( It looked like Stevie Wonder had been at it with an axe

Day 3 on the project and got a fair bit done

Drilled the bolt holes in the top cap ready for tapping

Drilled and countersunk the body for the bolt heads

Next Big Birtha made an appearance for the stem shaft

Stem shaft offered up (not knocked it yet)

Big day tomorrow, got to pair the two pieces together and drill the hole for the bars

Had to work a little late to wait for a delivery so cracked on with the pilot hole for the bars

Note the piece of mountboard between the two pieces. Hopefully this will give me just enough space to nip the pieces up around the bars leaving an almost seamless gap
