Removing Alloy tarnishing

Got a pair of alloy hubs that I've cleaned up, looking very shiney but there is a small amount of tarnishing. Looking like small worm runs (best as I can describe).
Can this be removed?

depends how deep it is. is the alloy laquered, or just plain old alloy?

Good question. It is very shiny so might be lacquered. which means I have to get the lacquer off first right!
If they are not lacquered is it simply a case of elbow grease and time, or perhaps a Dremmel?
