This is a phase one, Viscount grips, vinyl pads with press studs, Kashi MX seat, rat trap pedals.

Thanks for the info about the phase 1/phase 2 spec. So what models were out during phase 1? Just the blue/yellow, or where there others?

As far as I know:

Mini (red)
Mini (blue)
Red/yellow
Blue/yellow
GS (catalogue special)
GX (catalogue special)
Chrome
Tuff
Super (with coaster tab)
Super Tuff
Ultra
Cromo
Pro

Are you sure it was a kashi MX and not a Viscount One ?
I'm sure my GS Burner only came with a copy seat ? I could be wrong though?  ::)

Could be Ant, makes sense as they're using Viscount grips.

Cheers for confirming Rob, I knew all the Phase I, Mk1's had MX seats but assumed they were Kashimax. I think the Pro Burner favoured a Kashi though.

I think it was the first BMX I recall seeing too in the flesh.  :-\ Most of the kids round my way had a Diamond Back. :)

For me its the other way round, the MK1 can be forgiven due to the early stage of BMX and Raleigh's first attempt, the MK2 should've been where they corrected all the original design issues and even copied the Tange geometry? But instead they fooked it up again and for that reason I think its one of the worst things made in BMX

I never had a burner, but I agree with the above. The MK1 looks sort of cool because of the gusset. The MK2 just looks wrong to me. The rear end geometry is just  :-[

So what's the difference between the:

Tuff

and

Super (with coaster tab)

Was the Super Tuff gold with black tuffs?

Great thread by the way. The night burner and extra burner were always my favourites  :smitten:

The Tuff was the blue/yellow bike, with Skyway Tuff II's, this then became the Mag Burner replacing the Tuffs with the French made Simpkex 7 spoke wheels.

The Super Burner was gold, with gold wheels (weinmann's), gold chain wheel etc, the Super Tuff had black Tuffs and better spec.

By the time the Phase II, Mk1's had been released (1983), there were a few additions to the range:

Mini (chrome)
Extra
Night
Aero Pro (replacing Pro)

The biggest differences from Phase I's to Phase II's were that the pad sets had been replaced from vinyl with press studs to nylon/Velcro, the grips had changed from Viscount to Fuan (large dot type) on low end Burners, and Tange in the mid range bikes, the seats were changed from MX type, to 'Bmx' aero type, pedals were changed from rat traps, to Sugino Maxy Cross plastic ones, Cheng Shin snake bellies replaced by Cheng Shin Comp III's.

Blue / Yellow with tuffs.

Red / Yellow with spokes.

That was how I always remembered them to be.

Always liked the gold super burners.

true in a sense . the mk 2 was terrible to ride but 25.4 seatposts and single gussets always look wrong and were well phased out in the industry by the time the mk1 came out . shame raleigh was ran by sturmey archer who got famous from a hub designed in 1915 where their thinking stayed.

As it's not a Burner bashing thread I will just add that you all seem to have forgotten the Tange made Cromo Burner which was out at the time the Aero Pro appeared. Before I get flamed I am only speaking from memory though as I recall the first time my brother and I first set eyes on the beautiful Aero Pro and it's down-specked younger sibling at the same time Which my parents bought for him for cChristmas (the Chromo not the Aero - it was £180 vs £250 and nobody had a £250 bike where we lived!)

It's the only oldschool bike he took to Australia with him as the lucky sod still has it now. When he put it in the container to ship it he told the packing company it was his most prized possession after his kids and wife........

Oh, with a gun to my head I would choose blue and yellow as the red is terrible :2funny:
Still limping......

Really surprised with the results so far, I would have guessed the Red/Yellow would come out on top  :-\

the best phase for Burners is when the 'phased' them out  ;D

What makes it even more frustrating and totally baffling is that Raleigh could have easily produced a much better bike than the MK2 Burner and then Styler given their US connections with Rampar then Raleigh Racing.

Raleigh had used this formula of pinching ideas from the states successfully with the Chopper, Grifter and then the MK1 Burner which is obviously based on the Rampar R10, (which was already outdated in the US by '82).

Why didn't they do the same for the MK2?  Although Raleigh had licensed their international activities to Huffy by this stage and the bikes where sold as Raleigh Racing, I'm sure they could still have collaborated R&D.

UK got the Raleigh Burner MK2, US got the RR series  :wtf:

UK got the Raleigh Styler, US got the Raleigh Shock  :wtf:

Unfortunately Raleigh like many other British companies of this time was run by idiots.
