Repops/NRPs- the good the bad and the ugly!
factory pilot:
I guess most of us are hypocrites Steve I agree with you.
Life for most of us non-purists is always grey not black and white.
Don't get me wrong I adore an era correct bike and my latest build ( 14 months and counting ) will hopefully be one for the purists like your good selves.
I think you made a good point Steve that bitd if you couldn't afford flights you got a one piece ...
In my case back then it was Landar parts ... That's all I could afford so that's what I put on my bike.
I equate a lot of the modern repop stuff with Landar stuff then i.e. on some builds I can't find or afford or want to put OG parts on them so I go for a cheaper option.
It's a compromise for me but like Andy said sometimes there's no rhyme or reason to our choices .. We're all individuals and free to enjoy this hobby in our own way for our own reasons.
I love a good purist though Steve like yourself because your builds and yours too Gnarlyscoots are the ones we all admire and aspire too..
MartyC:
There's a genuine place for repop/nrp stuff like tyres, grips, padsets, some hardware like seats, freewheels (no one does these mind), brake pads and other small hardware. Not so sure the market is there for all the stuff that is being made though but pretty soon all that will be old school and the cycle will begin again!
rooski:
I accept that certain things like decals, padsets etc can be extremely hard to find and I do use these on occasion, but only until some og ones come up.
My rider has some new parts on there such as twin pinch flites, new font tris, new tioga pedals etc, for mainly practical reasons.
I have made small parts myself, for stems, etc, so they can be returned to service.
Some parts are very hard to come by, however, alternatives can be used and sometimes they are cheaper than repoops.
The repoop Haro 1b plates are a good example of unneeded repoop, why would you want one?
oldscool:
I think everyone will have there own reasons for repop, I count tyres, grips cables etc as wear items and dont mind them at least you can ride your bike. As for the brake calipers and cranks etc if it was for a cheaper build then I would just use cheaper original alternatives.
But like DTTDB said most of us will let the odd repoop part go for a reason that only makes sense to us. :daumenhoch:
