A letter to BMX Action Bike/RAD
« on: March 14, 2017, 04:33 PM »
My only BMX claim to fame is having a short letter published in BMX Action Bike/RAD magazine. It would have been around about 1988 and I wrote to complain about the small amount of BMX articles in the magazine compared to the number of skating ones. Little did I know BMX would get dropped completely not long afterwards.  :'(

Would any magazine collectors be able to tell me in which issue a letter by "Mike Healey" was published, so that I can post a wanted on this forum and keep an eye out for it on Ebay.

Thanks!  :daumenhoch:

It's defo NOT in the feb 88 issue, as i've just checked. As you can see by the cover, there isn't any mention of bmx directly anymore - it's part of 'freestyle street action'

Good luck finding it - hopefully someone will have it

Thanks, I stupidly threw away all my 80s BMX magazines, but you'd have thought I might have kept that one issue!  :idiot2:

Yes, BMX became a dirty word in the late eighties, the BMX Action Bike logo got smaller and smaller until it vanished altogether along with any BMX articles. :(

I remember being a kid in the mid to late 70's and it was all Skateboards. We had skateboards, there were skateboard shops and the council built a skateboard park; hell, I even remember going to the cinima to see a skateboard film (I do not know its name and have yet to find it on youtube, it would have been a matinee show and been second feature as we were taken to the cinema by our grandparents on a Saturday).

By the turn of the 1980's is was BMX and I came alive. I have no recollection of Skateboarding returning. I guess I was was fully invested in Suzuki TS50ER and girls and parties to have noticed. It is interesting how time factored compartmentilised things can be.

I'm sure they showed that skateboard film as the warm up before Grease in our local cinema.

Suzuki TS50ER that brings back memories.
I had a red one my two mates had yellow ones..
I fitted a big bore kit and went like fook..
But my one mate had a FS1E and standard would pi$$ all over mine.
I would laugh my head off as each corner he would drag his pedals giving off sparks..
I gave it to my Bro who wrecked it in 6 months and end up in the docks .
I loved that bike..
Real men have Dachshunds I have three / now two 😓 missing you../ back too three with a rescue dachie

Was it about someone trying to break the downhill speed record or something like that?

Think that's the film I was thinking of too.... All driving round in a tour bus (SE racing style), got a new set of leathers for the final race of the film ?? Or something like that  :-\
If there's air in the tyres... it's a rider

Hey John, thanks for digging that out, much appreciated.  :daumenhoch:  Can't believe I wrote that nearly 30 years ago!  :-\
All things considered, it's not 'that' embarrassing. I'll have to get something put in the wanted section to see if I can get hold of a copy for myself.
