Old school Race Bike

Guys - advice if you will....

Just finishing my first show builds (Redline and Skyway) but I want to get involved in old school racing - and so I am looking for a suitable bike.

Problem is - I weigh a good 15 stone. Is there a suitable bike that will take the weight or do I need to get down to 12 stone before thinking about it? (this would mean a cabbage soup diet or a circumscision..neither I really fancy)

I was thinking of a PK Ripper being aluminium..but there are lots with cracks/re-welds so not sure if that is going to be the best option.

Any ideas?

Take a look at the Group 1 Haro race bikes from the late 80's, the ones with the caliper and not AD mounts (as these aren't technically alloowed for Old School racing).  They are reasonably long and very solid

Also - what is the score on putting on new school wheels etc for improving an oldschool race bike?

As far as I know the rules cover the 1" headtube/brakes....but what else?

im 15 stone and i built a robinson pro up and raced it at hartlepool this year

19.5 top tube gives you enough room,full chro molly

all this equals is 1 big grin at the end of the day

i wanted to race at the rad do at mk , but wife had other ideas

have since sold it and am building a goose for the next 1 ,,hell i might even just race it at a new school bash

look at late 80's early 90's bikes

top tubes were getting longer and all the bits are still suitable under OS rules
Haro RS's / robinsons / free agents etc etc

i have a pk ripper copy with l/g copy forks

I'd go for a robinson Pro XL as it's longer in the top tube than the Pro and has extra bracing at the back too to fight the flex your weight will put through it. Other than that I'd highly recomend a Haro Pro XL, again very rare and hard to find but they are about and I would have another one if one came up.

just go for the newest bike you can find that still has inch headset & no brake lugs  


i know its not technically the oldschool bike you will have had as a kid but it will be a lot stronger & a lot safer!
we don't bounce as well as we used to

Elf, Cycle Craft, TNT, RR, Freeagent, Robinson Pro...   all fantastic midschool rides that aren't too pricey.

I think there is a Robo pro frame set on ebay now... was £55

Yes I weigh in at just under 18 fookin stone, go with cro mo as rich says, since I have been riding again It is very noticable how the weight affects the ride, go for the longest frame you feel comfortable on, I have heard the last old school robinsons are a real nice ride, Sanmarco is a big lad, and he rated them. I think Nishikis one is a late robinson. Come down to Braintree on the 5th november, Im sure he will let you have a ride while he washes cars to pay for the comment about me........

Whats wrong with an 81-82 Supergoose? I am biased though. You'll never bust one of them though just racing.
