Whats is the best way of fitting a bottom bracket
« on: December 18, 2006, 10:22 AM »
I dont want to damage the sealed bearings or cups.  I was thinking about putting them in a vice and gently squeeze them in.  The last set I fitted I banged them in with a hammer and a piece of wood, but I did put a few marks in the bearing cups.  Whats is the best way to do it without causing any damage?

I use the vice method for sealed bearings. Just make sure yoiu have something soft accross the jaws, like a towel or something.

I would also consider a local bike shop ( hopefully with a guy you know working there / competant (sp) mechanic ) for BB's & Headsets .

best way is to make a pair of aluminium softjaws for the vice, so that when you tighten the vice the aluminium will squash first as its softer  :daumenhoch:

Pop the cups inthe freezer for a few hours and then two pieces of wood on either side of the vice jaws and you're away  :daumenhoch:

I gave up on the vice as it didnt go wide enough.  Whilst rooting around in my old mans shed I found a fook off wooden hammer and smacked the feckers in with it.  Thanks for the tips though fellas :daumenhoch:

I used a bit of 10mm threaded studing and 2 planed pieces of hard wood with 10mm holes in them and a couple of nuts and washers.Place a nut and washer on one end of the studing then put the studing through one piece of wood then the bearing cup,the frame, the other piece of wood and then the other nut and washer.Do both the nuts up so it pulls the bearing cup into the frame, then do the other side. Simple :D

Hope that makes sense. :daumenhoch:
