Just make sure everything is clean before you weld, no paint or rust. Chanfer the cut ends to 45 degrees so you get good penetration. Crank the power on the welder up, i doubt you'll blow through. The weld needs to slope nicely into the metal, not sit on top. Go slow, fill the gap and then grind back.
Oh, and make a jig so it all stays straight
Where are you?
I could do em for you, but you wouldnt want to pay me half a days money to do em right.
I would do it for parts trade if you have anything i want.
Its good to know how to weld anyhow, so its a good idea to buy a welder, practice and do em yourself.

Hi Graeme, thanks for all that. I think I will give it a go myself as there is always something coming up, so like you say its handy to know how. I have looked in the machine mart catalouge and they have a 30-130amp Mig, welds up to 5mm thick, is this good? I sound a right pro don't I, LOL!

and make sure you put a shim inside at bottom of steerer makes it stronger
.and make sure stem goes in first b4 welding right up
