you could file down the top few threads off your forks

do this with the big threaded headset bit screwed down - then you can wind it up to clean the threads

the diamond back ones you get from halfords all seem to do this.i took a couple of threads off the forks with an axe saw. seems to have done the job  ;).

axe saw fork chopping sounds good .small washer or 2 is my usual route though .
