Wheel nuts... different threads? Help...!

Hi Guys...

After patiently waiting the last 3 weeks to get on to my current build, a 1980 white and red mongoose motmag, i get to Sunday afternoon and...

I couldn't get it finished!!!

My problem.  Rear Motomag wheel, with reusable guts...  nicely cleaned and put back together ready to fit.. when i realise i am missing the rear wheel nut off one side...  this in most cases not being a problem i went into my box of bits to pull out every single nut i can find and none of them will fit....  Is it because the axle is american, and uses imperial or metric threads...?  I tried to put a bolt from my american 81 mongoose and it started to cross thread...

I even stripped it back down ready to put onto a new axle but the bendix coaster bits wouldn't fit the thread of my replacement axle...

Am i being stupid (admittedly not knowing the difference between imperial and metric would highlight i am not a mechanical genius..)

Help please...

There are different sizes, i think it's 26tpi on most but Skyway used 24tpi could be something else on motomags though i'm sure someone will know for sure. Do you have any skyways to try?

Have some Tuff 1's which i tried but no joy there...  They are the bolts that started to rethread the axle...  I have one good nut, which i have checked on both sides now, (and has rectified the cross thread)

Can i get nuts from a hardware store to fit??

Bob_Acid:
I'd try local bike shops first.

teamsano:
coaster brake axles have a differing thread to regular axles.

24tpi vs. 26tpi or something like that.

i've also had suntour hubs (iirc) that i couldn't get wheelnuts to fit.
