Skyway TA XL - Chrome 'Bling'
« on: October 18, 2009, 10:01 PM »
I have been collecting parts for another TA project but this Chrome TA XL became available from JJ so I went for it.

I have decided to put the other TA project on hold a little longer and build this instead.  I just couldn't wait, so so excited   :D

It isn't complete yet as I haven't even got a BB for it yet (the cranks have been thrown in just so I can see it together), I do have a black Redline BB but want to put a Chrome one in to continue with the Chrome theme.

The parts run down is:

Skyway TA XL Frame and Forks- 1984
Skyway Tuff 2's - Alloy Hubs
Repro Yellow Lable Comp 3's - Fat/Skinny
Skyway Freestyle Pads - Black - NOS
Shimano DX Seat Post - NOS   :smitten:  :smitten:   :smitten:
Elina Lightening Bolt - NOS
Hinged DC Seat Clamp
MX1000/900 with centralizers and Tech 3's
Oddy Slic Kables
Win 'CW Pro Bars' Type - NOS
GT Stem - Polished
Unknown Headset?
Tri AME - NOS
Sugino 44t Chainwheel
Tuf Neck Power Disk
Redline Twin Pinch
Shimano SX Pedals
Profile Chain Stays

Parts to go on yet:
Izumi Chain
BB
Tange 320 Headset with Black decal

Second thoughts:
I'm tempted to put some red into it with the Super Maxy Cross cranks I got off Iain recently, they are so cool, but I love the Chrome theme???
Original NOS CW Pro Bars
Change of Stem with an XL or XXL reach
Profile Box Cranks
Pad Set
NEW CHROME  :smitten:

Anyway let me know what you think of it so far?  Cheers Ben

Ben - you've built another bike !

What happened to "just the one for me"  :LolLolLolLol:

Love it mate  :smitten:

Will you be riding it  ???

As for "adding a bit of red" but "keeping the chrome theme" have you thought of trying a red chainring ? Personally I don't think it needs it - looks nice all chromey  8)

mongoositis - an expensive disease......

One is never enough!

I will ride it; dry days only though!  I would love to have it put up on the wall in the flat but my girlfriend would go banannas!   :2gunsfiring_v1:

I kind of agree with you about the red; Chrome is ACE!  Gald you like it, I'm totally head over heals with it   :smitten:   :smitten:

That is very nice Ben  :smitten:

Love that seatpost mate  :daumenhoch:

Don't think I would change the crank  for the Super Maxy but try it and get a few pics up and see what other RADsters say  ???

Glad you finally got what you had been looking for too  ;)

Sweet, shame they're not proper ceedubs. we don't see them enough these days, yet in 84 everybody had them.

What Bob said, hunt down some proper CW's, you need bigger bars on TA XL's to keep it looking stable and all in proportion. Something tall, wide and lofty.   :daumenhoch:

I love T/A's too

Kaner, dude ,it's very very rare if Mark J is wrong so take heed of his wise words  :daumenhoch:

You've got a great spec list there , with just a few tweeks would fine tune it too perfection  :daumenhoch:

It'll be lovely with your second choice parts, different stem , cranks , bars

lose the bars and the modern bits ,,,Twin pinch flites   ::) ( one piece would be better ) Profile chainstays  ::) your on a winner mate ,

It'll end  one of your faves  :smitten:

Just out of interest is the chrome alot better on your standard T/A as I find the chrome on XL's isn't a good as other frames ( they're a bit like Haro gen 1 quality as opposed to GT or Hutch quality  :-\ :-\ )

Its just gonna be a bit tricky making sure it gets home alright beacuse everyone is gonna be proper pi55ed!?  We cut back on the food so we can have more wine and beer for everyone all night!  Less than 4 weeks now . . .

I would buy some proper CW Bars if there were some available?  I missed some NOS ones on here a little while ago, I LOVE CW's but you just dont see them very often and they would have to be in proper good nick if they were going on this!

I know what you mean about the single piece crank . . . but I'm not so keen on them though, saw some 40th Anniversary Profile cranks at Alans BMX shop last week, they would look good on it, fook me expensive though!

What stem then?

This is why I have put the profile chain tensioners on

They work a treat as a drop out saver and as a tensioner, and they dont look that bad really, I just dont want to fook up those drop outs they are in such good condition!

Ahhh . . . just figured out this quote thingy:

I'm not sure about the chrome quality, the other TA has paint on it so I cant compare, it has rubbed slightly where the rear brake cable has been in the past but is pretty good as it is really, very similar to the KZ-83 I would say.

I had twin pinchers on my regular chrome TA to start with, along with those star shaped drop out saver/tensioners.  Saw the light and got a 1pc Sugino and a pair of vinyl washers that arent seen.  Now it looks the biz...
