I registered on this site some time ago when I was building up my Streetbeat, then I lost touch and have come back, and I have a rant to get off my chest.
Im sure this rant will mark me as an enemy or a snob to many on this site but its something that I have to say!
WTF is going on with all the absolute crap being put on peoples builds these days?
Crap parts and in some cases crap frames that we wouldn’t have touched in the old days... Is it just that your tight and don’t want to shell out for a decent skyway/haro/GT?
3 Prime examples:
Maxycross cranks
These things were hideous back in the day and I for one would have been embarrassed to be seen with a pair (I stuck with a one piece till I could afford a set of profiles). I remember halfords had literally hundreds of them on the shelf as frankly - they were shit!
DP freestylers
Absolute cack then, cack now in my eyes. Sure, I appreciate that to some there’s a certain quirkiness about a British built (read birdshit welded, low quality steel) frame but honestly we used to laugh at DP's back then and I still laugh at them now.
Cack stems, ie Sugino, SR etc
Appalingly made sandcast lumps of ugliness – just why?
Am I on my own here? Don’t get me wrong I see some quality builds still happening (the trickstar for example) but honestly the cheapo build seems to be taking over and I DONT LIKE IT!
Rant over, flak jacket engaged, bring on the flames
:knuppel2:
-
Maybe peeps are just skint and will buy better parts when they've got a bit more disposable income. I'd like to build another bike but the thought of shelling out for a half decent frame will just not happen at the mo, too many other financial commitments. :)
-
For a lot of people, the best stuff is worth 2 much and so lower end or less desirable stuff is being snapped up
-
I think you have to build to a budget and if that is Maxycross cranks and Sugino or SR stems then so be it
DP frames absolute Cack :angrysoapbox: . I had on back in the day and I have one now and they are a dream to ride. I even prefer it to my Haro Master :daumenhoch:
-
so standards slip AND your a cheap bastard too?
:2funny:
-
its now much more difficult to build a high end bike than it was 3 or 4 years ago, because all the nos stuff has been used up, people hang on to it and sell off there low end stuff, and no one is prepared to pay top dollar for mint desirable parts, on top of all that everything has been done to death now, and its just more of the same..... :-\
and tbh i would sooner see a mint low end bike (like my tin murray) than a hutch, as they are much rarer....
-
Oooh - BMX eugenics ;)
If all that was built up were top-o'-da range bmx's from BITD, then there'd be no examples of the low and mid range bikes left, they'd all have gone into landfill recycling. For a lot of people the low and mid stuff was what they rode and hold dear to themselves because of the memories.
Any part of a collection generally isn't just limited to high-end products, you need the good, bad and ugly. I'd love to rebuild my Freeway Aero frame with it's original thin spoke Acorn mags not because they're quality built parts but because that bike holds a lot of memories for me. Just me 10p's worth :)
-
;D this is going to be a funny thread ;D
-
I had a freeway acorn freestyler bitd and you couldnt pay me to have one now!

I have not been involved in this hobby for very long and as I see it there are two type of builds, one for show that's never going to be ridden and ones that get built to ride (all be it carefully), mine are built for riding and therefore have parts on them that are not going to break the bank or your heart when you fook them up, I build them that way because I enjoy riding them that way with a big grin on my face :daumenhoch:
Build what you want, how you like it, after all its your bike :coolsmiley:

Hi
I kind of agree with you on Maxycross cranks. Never really liked them and they are pretty ugly.
DP freestylers Absolute cack then, cack now in my eyes.
You serious??!! Forgetting about any preconceptions you have or childhood snobberies; if you had never heard of Haro/GT/DP/etc before, and you stuck their classic freestyler designs side by side, I think most people would say the DP is visually the most striking. Haro's always look just slightly "not right"; they are too high and the angle where the double top tubes bend to go down to the drop-out, that angel is just slightly mis-placed for it to be visually pleasing. The geometry of a DP is faultless and looks gorgeous.
Clearly beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Im probably bias as I have 2 DPs.
Btw, I have nothing against Haros and would love one (they were my childhood dream bike) but all these years later when I can take a subjective step back and reconsider, I just come to the conclusion that once you take out of the equation the big name sponsorship/company founder, I realises that there are far more attractive freestylers out there than Haro freestylers.
Cool thread.. I expect its going to go on for a while :)

dont be silly...... the whole thing went in the bin when it snapped in half after flying out of the concrete halfpipe at rom. Actually thats a lie, I held onto the pink acorns for a while as I thought the hubs were cool :)
-
its not a case of standards or being cheap, many people build there bike to factory spec and if that includes maxy cross cranks or a sugino stem then thats what they build it with.
also for a lot of people that how their bike was bitd so they build using the parts they used at the time.
i had a sugino stem on my goose in 81 and never had a problem with it.

I have to say I like the old DPs but there geometry is awful! There head tube angle is way to relaxed and the steering is all over the place.
I can understand where you're coming from ukoldschool but I think the low end stuff deserves a place in the history of it all. After all not all of us ever had haros or GTs, Christ all I had was a burner but its all bmx brother :daumenhoch:
-
morning troll
I took a haro master frame and put a mixture of non-era correct parts and repops on it
because
1) I'm on a budget and am also a tight bastard (since I don't live with my parents I have to spend money on other 'essential' stuff like bills and food)
2) I'm going to ride it, not tug myself off looking at it in the living room so don't want to be agonising over scuffing some top end bike porn when I fall off
love and hugs :-*

sometimes its nice to mix things up a bit so if you fancy a maxy cross crank for example as your other builds all have flights then so be it,theres no point in building every bike the same with tuf neck stem, flight cranks, polished arayas, kashi mx,gt bars etc etc, what would be the point in that.as for dp freesylers i could only dream about owning one back then so although not my cuppa now i still think they are an important part of os bmx ,very desirable and british :Great_Britain:

Build what you want, how you like it, after all its your bike :coolsmiley:
I've built mine to ride them, never really liked the one piece cranks, and some of the newer cranks still look the part on the older style frames so I don't see that's a problem.
I'm no carpet queen. ;)

I have to say I like the old DPs but there geometry is awful! There head tube angle is way to relaxed and the steering is all over the place.
Thank god a voice of sanity! They rode like what they were - a very poor copy of a haro with the angles all wrong. The only reason the forks are non raked is to try and put some sparkle into the geometry - and all that did was to make them feel nasty and squirelly. Ride a master or a streetbeat directly after a Firebird and youll see what I mean. Even an Ammaco freestyler (which was frankly the ultimate dogshit bike) has better geometry than a DP IMO.
-
Aww has Mr Gumpy got an ickle bumblebee in his pants about OS parts
SEND IN DIGGLER
-
Sorry lads, I agree on the geometry of the DP being poor to be honest but it's my personal opinion.
However, rider bikes can't justify 401's and NOS DC brakes so you have to take a look at your budget and decide what you spend it on.
-

I have and I get straight back off the Haro Master and Back on the DP. The DP rides much better IMO :daumenhoch:

:LolLolLolLol: At the comments from the Streetbeat owner. Ginny used to sell a Streetbeat f+f for $50 which is cheaper than an Aero Reflex frameset. What is the point of throwing a load of high-end bits on a $50 frameset - all of those inferior brands you refer to would be perfectly suited for such a build. You can't polish a turd, no matter how you you dress it up. :uglystupid2:
-
This is a hobby, fook all else. not about proving your current financial status through power spending. It's those sad bastards who drove the prices up on themselves. You can try and prove you're the man with aerospeeds and sst's but you'll still have a small penis no matter how much you over compensate.
Long live Ali cranks.

Eh? Harry potters mates sister used to sell streetbeats for $50 and this somehow makes them a worse f&f than an aeroreflex? ive yet to see a $50 2 tone streetbeat but im happy to be proven wrong so point me in the right direction. While your at it point the DP firebird builders there too and they can get a decent frame to replace their DP's :)
By the way you can polish a turd. check mythbusters ;)
-
I have a frame pad for that puch !!! Free of charge . You need padding anyway
-
Lower quality parts on more expensive frames are probably what a load of us had back in the day. Had a Kuwahara Nova and upgraded the frame to a Hutch Pro Racer after a few years. So there you have it, a top quality frame with parts from an entry level bike. It’s probably the same for a lot of us now as well.
Agree with you about the Maxycross cranks looking ugly, although they can look OK on the right build.
Julian
-
should all be about enjoyment, some of the lower end bike builds on here have been awsome n pure old school, i was not into racing BITD so never saw the team bikes etc all the bikes i saw were real proper used bikes built with the bits peeps wanted on em. i don't think standards have slipped i just think people are "getting real" and these builds are far more interesting than another stock bike which has been seen and done a thousand times before on this site and better. The best stock builds have already been done, utilising decent overlooked lower end parts at least has the potential of evoking real memories of "real" kids build BITD and is a welcome change to the same old same old.
Diggler, your puchs shit!

Not after the Puch, but whas teh chainringage?

Some of the cheaper bikes are often more iconic than the expensive ones.
I have a mongoose motomag in my collection, not because its particularly valuable or hard to find... but purely that when I look at it its brings the greatest memories of summer days rolling around the bomb drops in the woods near to where I lived than any other bike I can think of.
quite simply you cannot put a price on that.....
It could have been a team murry, or a halfords turbo... it could have been a Skyway ta with hutch aeroplops
But it was and is a mongoose motomag.... a half tone lump of steel that I love to bits
Its not the bike I use 'covet' (long after) that was always the PK Ripper, so I have one of those now, but that's more of a symbol of where I am now and not where I was then.

Somebody on FB made a good analogy of this situation:
"People that restore 'low end' bikes are akin to those that collect and restore austin allegros and morris marinas"

what a shit thread.
people build bikes how they want.
others pass comments.
people round out way didnt have super smart parts on their bmx's when they were kids, they got what they were given/saved up for.
i've got fooking brewsters and have never owned a set of aerospeeds.
i like munners.
i think my mum was fit when she was younger, does that make me wierd?
one of the reasons i dont do much with old school bmx's anymore is i got a bit bored, but since i started riding the other night with my boy, i've got the buzz again.
my cars grey, and i've got a grey pube also.
i like a handful and have never had a gay sexual experience, i play computer games often, but dont fantasise about killing people, or bumming them then killing them
the real world is infinately more rewarding than the virual one.
ANYONE FANCY A FUCKING BUM!
except you craig, as i reckon you'd take some holding down.....

UKoldschool, there's a place for fundamentalist old school bmxers that spend their entire time ranting about everthing and they've a jihad on repops, it's called the bmx society, maybe you should give it a look :crazy2:

You know what i think this place is great cos of all the different parts used on different bike - that's the cool sh!t :daumenhoch:
and the other thing i like is, that we know not to run our mouths like we are god almighty and make ourselves look like a c0ck :daumenhoch:
ukoldschool i guess we would have liked you if you didn't run yer mouth like a Cnut :2funny: the thread idea has brought out some good bits - but sadly none of what you have said :'(

Well said bendy, and here's to cheap builds :daumenhoch:
-
Build what ya like dudes :daumenhoch:
some bikes were good, some were not so good, all are worthy :)
-
Well said bendy, and here's to cheap builds :daumenhoch:
I must say that the cheap builds are definately the 'in thing' these days, I think the oldschool BMX scene in the UK has gone away from the pristine and expensive parts and has landed firmly in the 'build what you had as a kid' instead of the 'build what you always dreamed of'.
I have quite a few bikes, DeCoster, Slingshot, Champion etc etc but my 2 favourites are my Scorpion and my Yamaha. Both were well cheap to buy and also to rebuild again, but they remind me of a long time ago when the summers always seemed to be hot and sunny and me and my mates used to bomb around the neighbourhood without a care in the world.
-
when we all went on the "wetting the babies head" London ride - it was bloody great - why cos nobody cared what yer rode or how it was put together and with what - yes there were some nice top bikes, but it was the ride and being a part of a gang for the day - the amount you spent on the bike didn't mean sh!t that day - just good old 80's fashion fun >:D
-
You hit the nail on the head there Bendy :daumenhoch:
-
Radchester the same. A mixture of all sorts.
A common interest, no rules, no snobbery, just good craic

Bang on, now I have got my original bike restored as It was when I was a kid ( cost my dad £325 BITD) I love rolling around on it with my mates, my kids and their kids, massive grins all round and I enjoyed doing the DP, still cost a few quid to do though :daumenhoch:
-
My de ja vu is having de ja vu.
D you fancy a bum?
I could murder a lumpy ginger tonight....
-
Pissed myself reading this lot you nutters :2funny:
I personally couldn't give a rat's ass what you lot think of my alloy-cranks and single-pinch 90's cranks and new school tyres and new-school drivetrains, I fookin ride them all properly and enjoy every one of them :daumenhoch:
I fookin hate NOS parts bolted onto a NOS frame that cost a small fortune - a bit of resto yourself here and there, a bit of blast & powder and a bit of imagination and thought and that gets my vote everytime. If you put a cheap part on I don't care as long as you put some soul into it :daumenhoch:
Nuff said :yahoo_silent:

i don't think it's yer bike, it's how you shout about it ! it could be nos hutch to rider burner , it's all cool

when we all went on the "wetting the babies head" London ride - it was bloody great - why cos nobody cared what yer rode or how it was put together and with what - yes there were some nice top bikes, but it was the ride and being a part of a gang for the day - the amount you spent on the bike didn't mean sh!t that day - just good old 80's fashion fun >:D
With you one that one!!! That ride back was a fcuking laugh... What a good day out.. And we have the picture to,don't we aguff..we build and by what we can!! I remember most of the cheap bikes from my youth... This is a fcuking windup!!!! ;D

Couple of things from me; firstly, i'm still waiting for someone to do a Mk1 Piranah. They were crap and they were cheap but it was the first bike to come into my circle of friends and I'm still waiting for a stock one to come along, it's been a long wait.
Secondly; Sugino stems? As a kid i rode most of the stems that were on the market at the time bar Hutch or ESP and the one that kept going back on after breakages was the DB Sugino.

This thread shows that we don't give a sh!t about the f'ing price of a bike - if you want to put top parts on, do it - if you want to do up a bike that was a pos and cheap first bike, well go the fcuk ahead - IT'S BMX 8)
this thread has turned around from some gob shite mouthing off to a bloody good read - keep it going :daumenhoch:

Crap parts and in some cases crap frames that we wouldn’t have touched in the old days... Is it just that your tight and don’t want to shell out for a decent skyway/haro/GT?
DP freestylers
Absolute cack then, cack now in my eyes. Sure, I appreciate that to some there’s a certain quirkiness about a British built (read birdshit welded, low quality steel) frame but honestly we used to laugh at DP's back then and I still laugh at them now.
sounds like your building a cheap bike if you cant shell out a tenner for a site supporters tag ;D ;D ;D ;D
DP cack you must be on crack :uglystupid2: :uglystupid2: :uglystupid2: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol: :LolLolLolLol:
-
I have to say I like the old DPs but there geometry is awful!
Even an Ammaco freestyler (which was frankly the ultimate dogshit bike) has better geometry than a DP IMO.
you talk out your crack mate........... i rode my dp back in the day and it was great for flatland and still have it now............. why dont you build a haro than instead of a pos streetbeat? tight arse :LolLolLolLol:

Just read this thread. What a total fookin dickhead. I thought skyway street beat were a poor mans TA . Who gives a fook what parts you put on your bike.
And as for DP's I know which one I would choose between that and a streetbeat (poor mans TA) and its not the shitebeat.

:knuppel2:

-
can we have a look at this streetbeat please?
Of course you can - its in the skyway section.
I see this thread has gone the way I imagined. I didnt expect it to be popular but at least it stirred a bit of debate (amongst the worryingly homo erotic come-ons from bendycant et al)
A couple of things that need addressing firstly IMO a streetbeat rides better than a haro (Ive tried them all), its an excellent F&F. Its also not a 'poor mans TA', hahaha!if you knew anything about skyways youd know that. Regarding me being cheap and not buying a 'site sponsor' tag - when I first registered you didnt need one, and at the mo there isnt anything I need to buy. But if that changes, ill have no problem with buying a tag, after all it only costs the same as a low end F&F ;)
TTFN, looking forward to the responses :)

Its what you can afford, I hadnt bought anything from Alans for years and when I logged in there was some old stuff in my basket that I never get round to buying, suntour stem for example was about £15 in 2004/5 what would it be now? Torker f&f £120 is another, now it would be three times that, and there was lots of it as well.

Can we hear more from the originator of this thread please, his comments are the highlights of my day.

I've seen a few different threads about things like using repops and non era correct parts like twin pinch cranks on old school builds on forums but this has to be the first time I've seen out and out snobbery about the brand or type of parts used.
I would love a set of NOS green and blue label comp 3's but never while my arse looks downwards would I ever even consider paying over £200-300 for a set.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
As for hating on the parts that are on restored bikes, does that extend to hating on SR stems that are on builds which would have come with SR stems from new?, because if so that makes absolutely no sense.
I fail to see a reason for whining over which parts someone else choses to use for their builds, if they like it then that's all that matters, if you don't like it, don't fookin' look at it.

Ooooo, i wonder what the parts are worth on my bike now, mmm.
My bike is made up of mid range stuff, the araya aeros are probably the best bit, oh and I did stick a 5 quid seat post on it from halfords just to get it finished.

i think they were considered top end when they came out though

Whats classed as a top brand? We should do a desirabilty league table of frames. That would be an interesting read.
-
I'm guessing quite a lot of people build for nostalgic reasons and memories and not because they were born with a silver spoon up their arse.
People are bored of the Redline Flites, the Tuff Neck Stems, the Kashi Aeros.....they've been done thousands of times. Not saying there's anything
wrong with that as I have done the same but people are going back to their roots and finding the old bikes that 'Mean' something to them and if thats
buying some old piece of 80's iron that they had bitd then there's nowt wrong with that.
I too have a Streetbeat....lovely bike but who cares wether it rides nice or the geometrys good or wether its better than a DP? I'm 40 next year I really dont give a shit.
It's about the memories for me as its what I always wanted when I used to watch Carlo and Craig bitd on BMX Beat.
I have a few bikes now The Streetbeat, Mongo Cali, PK Ripper and a Silverfox to name a few.......but if the Mrs said I had to get rid and keep only one then the Fox
would be staying no question.....its not because its loaded with top end parts as its totally standard, its because it means the most to me as its what my parents scrimped
and saved for all those years ago to make me happy when I was 14.......and if that makes me a cheap bastard then so be it.
You sound like a complete Donkeys D1ck to be honest and remind me of a lad at our school who had more Mongooses at 14 than Bobafett, all completely loaded with
the most expensive parts as his parents were rich (not now though as they eventually filed for bankruptcy). Always coming to school on his new 'Look at me' creation.
I saw him a few months ago and he's still the biggest tosser I have ever met, he's fat bald and ugly and his Mrs looked like she needed a jet wash.
People build bikes for personal reasons too but I'm guessing you wont understand that?
