Title: My new bit on the side - Dont tell the wife!!
Post by: hazzajoe on April 19, 2013, 09:27 AM

Hopefully these images turn out to be the ones I want them to be.  If they dont, its a because a) I'm have ludite like qualities and b) because the new photobucket sucks ass!!!

All being well the images below should show the first shots of my newly acquired S&M Holmes, hopefully not too controversial "reissue".

I have been a member of the site for a few years now and have lightly partaken in some north region o/s racing. I really enjoy the crack at the racing.

I have owned and raced a number of o/s rides. An 86 robbo pro looptail, 90 ish robbo pro xl, elf double cross. I currently have a free agent Limo built up, and raced it last weekend at Coppul. I'll stick a picture in the museum if I get chance.
In the past I've not been too fussed about era correctness or indeed if things even look that good, function and value for money has always taken priority.

With this Holmes, again era correctness wont be my priority over function, however, I will try to build it with a bit more respect than I have had in the past.

Watch this space.

Way cool. I wish I had got one of those when they were out.  8)

I think that this Homes and the HaroFreestyler are the only (?) re-issue frames that have done it right.
Totally as they were 1st time round, no "improvments" at all  :daumenhoch:

I dont think S&M will make them again (unless they sell for HaroFreestyler re-issue money!  :LolLolLolLol:)

cool :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:

is it the one thats been on ebay the last few weeks?

always wondered how to tell the difference between the og ones and the reissue if they are ment to be identical, do they have anything stamped on them to denote they are a reissue?

Yeah I bought it from the bay, I really wanted a challenger, but as you all know better than I do, no-one is in a rush to sell one.

As far as it being stamped, I dont know, I've not had all of the protection off the frame yet, which as I'm typing this I'm realising, is somewhat blase' of me. I should really check it.

yeah mk1 challengers dont come up for sale very often but you have bought a very good alternative :daumenhoch:

im wondering if there is anything in the serial number which would denote that its a reissue version

I think the new frames had the frame number SHMxxx and there were 100 made.
The old frames were HXLxxxx

Mid Race wheels 36h ? Pitbull 2. Repop padset? :daumenhoch:

Kev they have a different serial format to the old frames (a mate had one) its something like SMH *** three digits other than that they're identical to a mk 1 even have the sandwiched dropouts  :daumenhoch:

I wish i'd bought one n all

Anth you beat me to this one!

Just noticed alex has pointed out the serial no. Differences (i'm on my fone) my mate built his then bought a dirtbike didn't have a seat post for it so cut the holmes seat post in half to make two  :LolLolLolLol:

 Nice Holmes dude..
It would be interesting to see if there is much difference in geometry between your Limo and this..The Free Agent kind of paved the way for what is now considered almost standard race geometry..

Bit o'class there pal. Best frameset ever.
Keep the back end as short as you can (44-16 works perfect) and you will never want owt else. H have a brace of Holmes's, and a limo. The Holmes is very much like the limo, just stiffer.
Keep us updated on your build.  ;)

Grips and pedals are the only parts you feel so go for what you think is comfy. To be fair, a holmes feels nice with sandpaper for grips and bent pedals with seized up bearings!!
Really like this bike. Hope you like it as much as i like mine.

Before getting the ripsaw, I got this robinson 44t, it was/is nos but was powder coated black with lots of shelf/storage scratches, so after Gish gave me some polishing tips, I had a go.

need to commence this build this week, hopefully b/b will arrive today or tomorrow, deadline was MK 13 now its Leeds North Region Summer Series Round 4 on the 2nd of June.

I found this picture of my first bmx as an adult. I bought it in the late 90's from a mate who rode trails, I knew not what trails were back then! It was total luck that the bike I bought was a S&M dirtbike. I bought it to commute around my mates and girlfriends hou when I lost my drivers liscence :(

I knew nothing about the bike other than the buzz words that Joe used when giving me the sales pitch. First Gen Dirt Bike. Pitch forks, red neck.( rings a bell) A head, (maybe??) Primo, Quando, Araya, Seventies, Dirty Harry. AD990.

Pic doesnt give much away and isnt very flattering to either myself or my mam

Here we go fella's it's been a busy day but inbetween the Holmes has been built. It's not been thrown together, it's ready to race a week tomorrow at Leeds, however, there are some changes I want to make before then.
The main 1 is to get a right way up stem rather than inverted. If I don't get one before Leeds, I do have a 15mm spacer I've turned to raise the bars, I'm just not happy with how it looks with the spacer in  :-\

Other small changes I need to make. Chain tensioners need changing for some black or polished ones.

Need to trim down me new linear cable.

Gonna swap out the tyres with 1.75 dirt monsters, supplied by Gish  :daumenhoch:

Sort out seat angle and height. Maybe  a new second hand primo rod on the way .

Possibly a polished pitbull 2. Tho not before Leeds.

Grips a presently renthal firm and grippy, not sure what to replace them with.

In two minds about the polished chainring. I can't imagine a black one will come up in a hurry.

Thanks for the positive comments fellas  :daumenhoch:

We've been away in a lodge on the Northumbrian coast since mon am and don't return home til Friday evening so I haven't been able to tinker with the Holmes. With hindsight I should've brought it to play with whilst he wife and kids have been watching Britains got Talent etc, the dog might have thanked me for it, cos I've been walking the legs off her ;)

I've got a oddy svelte, tried it on but it just looked huge.

I've got a nos pitbull 2 but I would need to cut the cable to fit it, at the min my brake is not good but not bad either so might leave that until after tommorow.

Was also thinking of dropping a 1/2 link in to slam the back end ???

Also cannot stop thinking about me old freeagent and gish's challenger. :P Cuckhoo!!!! :-)

Ordered a 3/32 half link and some pads that will be compatible to the pitbull 2! And possible tyre change before Manchester.

Need to get some riding in so that I can do this bike proud :)

I've had a couple of hours tweak tonight . Shortened the brake cable and fit and set up he pitbull 2. Replaced black Taiwan tech 77 with black and silver Japan tech 77. For me it was more about the colour than the heritage:-) changed the tyres to pucka 1.75 dirtmonsters and filled the inner tubes with more air than I normally do.

It's dark so pics will be to follow.

Welcome back Dudes.

I've slightly modified the Holmes since Rad went down. Primo Dirtmonster boots, ( correctly positioned on the rims in relation to the valve, after a bollocking from Gish )

seat angle tweaked again.

New seventies linear cable. I need function over era correctness here!

Pitbull 2 brake.

Since the first photo's I've tweaked the bar angle to an angle I find less aesthetically pleasing, but it has made riding the bike much better. I have tipped them forward 12 degree's ish to make up for the back sweep of the bars.

I still haven't got round to removing two links and fitting a half link to slam the back end, I will do this as part of the next Maclaren style upgrade package which will include shorter chain, freewheel upgrade, seat height revised( ( i'm still ball catching ), brake pad upgrade, brake lever tweak ( its reach is 5-10mm to far to for me use comfortably), and hopefully a conventional top load stem.

Nothing to see here. Just a boring tech upgrade. Changed the freewheel to a nos Shimano one. Took two links out, added a half link to slam the back wheel. Had a role around summerhill and it seems more responsive in terms of manualing ? Got home checked me tyre pressures , sub 45 psi. So I've upped them to 70psi.

Probabllies won't ride it much if at all between now and MK. Hopefully a nice top load stem will come up for sale before then.
