Title: standard survivor
Post by: darkersomeday on July 09, 2007, 04:06 PM
i spotted this on e-bay listed as,

"vintage profile cranks with unknown frame, forks, bars etc,"

its actually a "21tt standard 125bicyclemotocross!

with early standard bash forks, standard stem and early standard strip bars!

with the profile cranks!

trouble is the seatpost and cranks are seized in there like a bastard!
i'm going to soak&cherry them to get them out,

I believe that model was just called Bicycle Moto Cross.  They became 125R when Standard started using the air hardened tubing.

A 97 Bicycle Moto Cross replaced my 96 Holmes then I got a 2001 125R (not as good as the Bicycle Moto Cross in my opinion).

That there is one of the best 90s race bikes.

i think you could be right there mike,
the frame looks early enough to be a "bicyclemotocross"

they did make a "125 bicyclemotocross" frame though, with either u-brake lugs or canti mounts,
if you look at the toptube sticker in the photo you can see theres no "R" behind it,

i had intended to use these on the "125r" frame also in the pic but i seemed a shame so i picked up a set of "125r" stickers for it last week,

its not 100% accurate but i'm going to use the "125bicyclemotocross" set on this new arrival, would it be wrong to?

i'm planning to do the whole thing in fresh black powdercoat, would it be better to have it re-chromed instead?

i'm sure i got the 125r off you mike :LolLolLolLol:

mmm that will look the mutts
joe will the rear end take a brake plate for a bolt on 990 by any chance.
Title: Re: standard survivor
Post by: dialledbikes on July 09, 2007, 04:51 PM
i'm sure i got the 125r off you mike :LolLolLolLol:

I sold my original Bicycle Moto Cross to a Geordie/Middlesboro dude who worked at Cycle Surgery and Yellow Jersey in London.
I sold my candy apple red 125R to someone from Sheffield.  Is that you (Joe)?

I have loads of Standard stickers somewhere (I may even have an old style head tube sticker (S in an oval rather than a circle) and curvier downtube stickers (before Standard went all military)).  The trouble is, where the fk are they?!

And if that frame you have was originally chrome, then it will almost certainly be a Bicycle Moto Cross as I don't ever recall Standard making the 125R in chrome (in fact I'm fairly positive they didn't).

hi mike i'm joe :LolLolLolLol:

the 125r is a pearl mate :daumenhoch: thanks for sorting it out for me,
a bit of a "grail" frame for me as i've always wanted one,
i had a 125motocross years ago phil "hudu" charnley still has it i think!, gorgeous frame equal to any ns ride :daumenhoch:
it might try and prise it back off him one day!

youre spot on about the chrome 125r :daumenhoch:
i've never seen or heard of one,

i'll happily buy all the standard stickers you have dude! i've become a bit of a sticker library!
i'm always happy to help folk out with them to finish off a build and i'm scanning them before hand so other folk can get proper re-pops 10 years down the line or whatever,

let me know what you think,

Title: Re: standard survivor
Post by: dialledbikes on July 09, 2007, 05:28 PM
If I come across the stickers, I will let you know.

The ones that came on my original motocross are very different to all the later Standard ones, so you will definitely want to scan those.

I've also got a head tube sticker with a snake/cobra on it.  Have you seen that one?

i would prefer to use a chainstay mounted u-brake dan but the brace is way too small,

would i be taking thee piss if i put canti brakes on it?

or should i stick with v-brakes?
Title: Re: standard survivor
Post by: harris on July 09, 2007, 05:32 PM
i was going to look out for one ,and if i could lob the lugs of and afix a 990 as the v is to harsh and instant.
try them both see what works and looks better.
Title: Re: standard survivor
Post by: dialledbikes on July 09, 2007, 05:38 PM
Standard Bicycle Moto Cross frames were pretty much the beginning of new school, so embrace that by keeping the V-mounts on there and running v-brakes/cantilever braks, rather than cutting them off and retro/down grading to a u-brake or caliper.
Title: Re: standard survivor

i just got told of   :-[    :daumenhoch:
Title: Re: standard survivor
Post by: Dingobmxer on July 09, 2007, 05:43 PM
If you struggle with the harshness of V-brakes then run an XTR or Avid speed dial lever which have an adjustment screw on them that you can "dial the feel" of the brakes in by changing the leverage ratio
 :)  DINGO  :)

that would be spot on dude :daumenhoch:

it might sound a bit daft but the whole scanning thing is to save folk lots of effort in the future!
seeing the lengths other members have gone to to replicate old stickers is crazy, colour matching, font, size, etc, etc, the big daddy sets anyone :LolLolLolLol:
i wont take the piss and do the current/recent ones though :daumenhoch: i'm not otu to piss rick off like :LolLolLolLol:

i know the cobra one you mean, i'd have that like a shot dude!

i've got three of the later "phoenix" stickers on there way from the usa but i'm shocked at how much i paid for them!
i'll scan these too if anyone needs them in the future,

heres the ones i planned to use on the bicyclemotocross survivor,

should i not use them and find a more suitable dated frame?

Title: Re: standard survivor
Post by: dialledbikes on July 09, 2007, 07:41 PM
Joe, if you're trying to get the frames looking era correct, then I wouldn't waste the stickers you have.  Wait until you get the right ones.

I'll let you know when I come across my Standard stickers.

i'm seriously thinking about taking mikes advice and passing the decals set over,

Joe, the SBC sticker in the top left hand corner of Laz's toolbox is the style of sticker the original Bicycle Moto Cross Stickers were.  My dark grey BMX originally came with green stickers which looked crap, so I bought a second set in red when I picked up the frame from Custom Riders and changed them straight away.  Maybe Custom Riders still have some as I can't imagine many people owned Standard Bicycle Moto Cross frames in the mid-90s (I only ever knew one other person with one and he bought it in America).

Title: Re: standard survivor
Post by: Lazarou on July 10, 2007, 02:36 PM
This was my 94 Bicycle Motocross the original stickers simply said Bicycle Motocross on the downtube and the headtube sticker was the same as the first generation STA sticker....

......the rounder lettering stickers on the right were later (96)

I'm sure i have a pic somewhere, i'll look it out...

Yep, mine was a 96 Laz and had those blue style stickers but in green, then red.

I do recall the ones which just said Bicycle Moto Cross on the down tube from the back page of Snap mag.  Never saw one in the flesh though.

would folk be interested in a set if i have some of these done?
cheers laz :daumenhoch:

that bicycle motocross is a peach, so is the sta dan :smitten:

that caustic soda shit scares me! i'll be honest!

how long does it take to eat the alloy?
why doesnt it affect the steel?

were going to have a look at pulling it tonight, i'm drilling a hole in the top f the post to put a bar through,

i thought about roping the frame to something solid and putting the winch on it! the risk of tearing the frame apart isnt worth it though :LolLolLolLol:

its been soaking in diesel all night so.....

,,,, i'll let you know how we go on :daumenhoch:

the costic is quit fast and easy to use ,and doesnt affect the steel.just dont inhale or get hear your eyes

Title: Re: standard survivor
Post by: darkersomeday on July 10, 2007, 11:27 PM
there was like 1 layer of paint on it so i couldnt resist!

theres a few scabby patches but its in good shape, no cracks, bends or re-welds, just a tiny dent on the inside c-stay,
the odd thing is the headtube has 2 stainless steel rings pressed onto it , top and bottom, where a more modern headtube would be machined

next up!

re-chrome?
powder?

Thats unreal! its come up so well. Good work.

Those rings are strange. People (S&M) were machining head tubes and BB shells before that frame was out so it wasnt a new thing. Im a bit surprised by that. I wonder if tey were an add-on (before or after the frame was sold)

the rings are odd like, i've never seen anthing like them, theyre on nice and tight which made me think they could have been pressed on in the factory but i dunno :LolLolLolLol:
