Mid School at MK18
« on: January 04, 2018, 11:02 PM »
MK17 saw the first mid school tent and the biggest turnout of mid school bikes ever at MK ... by miles.

I'd like to propose that because of the massive turnout last time that a new catagory or catagories should be added to the class.

In addition to 'Freestyle' and 'Race' we should add 'Trails/Dirt' ... what do you reckon?

Maybe even 'Freestyle' needs breaking down to 'Street' and 'Ramp/Park' ...  even a 'Flatland' section?

To me it just felt like while judging that a lots of bikes were getting overlooked.

Food for thought anyway :-)

we split into pairs this year ... 2 for freestyle 2 for race ... you still have look at the same number of bikes ... it just give more chance for great builds to be recognised  :daumenhoch:

Agree with splitting categories as there are much more definition between them, unlike with old school, could even be worth the next size up rent if numbers continue to increase.

Bmx changed a lot through the mid school years so suppose it's only right to recognise that... think the great turnout justifies the need.  :daumenhoch:

Great idea! How about, to keep it lean:

Best Freestyle/Vert
Best Flatland
Best Race
Best Dirt/Trails
Best Survivor

Flatland and Dirt/Trails should defo be represented IMHO because they were essentially pioneered in that era.

Loving your work lads.

Agree with the above. Survivor is a tricky one though. Does it have to be displayed as found? Or is anything that is built with parts that haven't been refinished automatically a survivor? There have been interesting debates around this in the old school section.

Yeah a tough one but not impossible to set some rules. Maybe any bike that was kept or bought with the parts, decals, etc that have survived since the bike was originally bought or built but perhaps allowing additions which are also ‘survivor’ parts? With judges marking down on repop or ‘new’ additions? So NOS additions from the era would be OK?

Think we can make our own rules up regarding survivors but NOS parts has gotta be a no no.  "nono"

I won't be doing a weekender ... just hit and run with Len on Sunday to ride whatever Rob has built but I still have an interest in making MK18 work for midschool like it does for old school ... things are moving on and MK needs to move with them.

New Catagories proposed :

MS Freestyle/Vert
MS Flatland
MS Race
MS Dirt/Trails
MS Survivor

The only one I'd dispute would be 'Survivor' ... mid school is based around bikes that have been ridden and used ... anyone who is judging Mid School would know that ... blingy mid school bikes didn't rate as highly as authentic looking survivors to me when I judged.... but its good that different judges should look for different things every year ... mixes things up ...

So I'd suggest a change to :

MS Freestyle/Vert
MS Flatland

MS Race
MS Dirt/Trails

You'd probably still only need 2/3 judges doing the Freestyle/Flat and 2/3 doing Race/Dirt

Nick ... you need to push this to Nick, Rich and Bob if you think its got legs  :4_17_5:

Agree that NOS and survivor cant exist on the same build and still be called a Survivor.

Happy to go with whatever you feel is best, last year I did mention that a few of the boys I was with had a fair amount of mid school bikes to share but didn’t really hear much back and that’s why there was a tent half way down the camping field where we all were

If you want to show and shine you just just enter them. Its not like you have to hear back from anyone. Its mot everyones cup of tea thoug, which is why there are bikes spread out all over the camp site.

Its good that Mid School was represented so well at MK over both days ... whether is was spread out on Saturday or all in one place on Sunday ... the fact that the number of bikes shown was off the scale was what mattered.

Based on last year it makes total sense to add Flatland and Trails/Dirt to the categories in the same way that 'street' and 'NS Retro' expand the Old School entries.

Most of the guys i was with only brought a tatse of their mid bikes and only a few of them made it into the main tent, as nick mentioned halfway down the campsite there was another tent rammed with mid bikes - well until it blew away  we could probably fill a tent just with S&M's.
Last year was my first MK and will definitely be bringing more this year, more specific categories will be awesome   :slayer:

Hey, aceness. Glad the ms went really well this last mk.

Could I make a teensie ickle suggestion that the freestyle category is renamed to street - I'm being a ms snob, but freestyle is a bit, well, 1980's (don't lynch me you lot)  :radbmxsmilie: :LolLolLolLol:
