New school gearing...HELP!

New school gearing...

Is there an equivalence chart on the site?

What does 44/16 equate to when you downsize your chainring?
Currently runnin a 36/14 - what does that work out as?? Want to go smaller.

Lookin at doing an almost completely new bike, and thinkin of cassete hub, etc.

Help much appreciated..

36/13  (which is what I'm running)  rides like 44/16, or very slightly taller.   Aside from that, what DD said   :daumenhoch:    It would seem that 28/10 is reliable and strong with no chain freakouts. I've heard of people running into drivetrain problems with 25/9, although these problems can all be sorted with a little work  :)

Framewise I'm torn between a Colony MVP, Hoffman Strowler (the longer one - in yellow!) or UK bikes Evolution (the shorter one!) , all of which have seatstay mounted brakes - which I will be running - so I reckon if I go to 30/11 I shouldn't have a problem.
Opinions?

Thinkin' of ordering the ONLY pair of Colony MVP forks with brake lugs (or so they say!), from Alans this week.

Get the Colony setup, I always fancied a MVP......   30/11 will be no problem at all, especially if you're running a half link chain  :daumenhoch:

Damn - I'm so undecided - the Strowler is the heavier of the three, but it's distinctive and YELLOW!
But the main point of me gettin' a new set up is to go lighter.
There's no point in me havin' lost a load of weight this year (really!) if I don't put the bike on a diet too!

Anyone know a good light stem w/gyro tabs that'll be strong enough for every knida ridin' ...? (Well, I don't do trails, but everything else!)

Cheers

I'm not a fan of the Oddy elementary stem personally, but aside from that I've not heard of any particularly bad stems. I have a Shadow stem which came with a gyro plate and that's been bulletproof so far.  How about checking out Standards new stuff, they must be doing a stem?

These are good http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/111886.html  and light too

or sack the giro and fit a Nokon cable, good enough for 3 rotations if set up right  :daumenhoch:

ive been running the demolition front loading f1 (or is it f40) stem. no probs here and its machined out so its light. dont know if it comes with gyro tabs though, just use the gyro plate.

My new ride will have 25/9 gearing but I might go with a bigger sprocket so I can pedal once or twice and be at speed :D

Should get here by Wednesday. I'm so stoked!

Went and rode at some event in Dallas in '91 I think but didn't enter. was getting 10 feet but just didn't feel right. Went to a local skatepark in '93 (Eisenberg's) and a public park in Tyler,TX around '95 I think but got a flat right away. After that, nowhere. It's been awhile  :D

So around 15 years or so then?   You'll be fine.  I had a 10 year gap and found my feet fairly quickly again. Others on here have had much, much longer layoffs - 22-25 years

Plus you could ride in the first place!

Just be careful on your very first few sessions bud, you don't want a big slam right at the start of your second wind  ;)

just built a new ride and  went for 30/10 to go faster, yeah its good but i needed a half link chain to get it short at the back but that would depend on the frames rear length, great chain on street tho was worth getting for sure

36-10 is where its at, with 185 crank arms too, well fast.

44-16
42-15
39-14
36-13
33-12
30-11
28-10
25-9

if anyone still cares

Cool! That's just what I was after!
Thinkin' 30/11 with 175 or 180mm Profiles.
Can't have them too long for da skatepark y'know!

185 isnt really that long, i ride skateparks mostley (rom) and theyve been fine.
180;s should be fine though if yout worried, not too much different from 175 but just enough to notice it in speed i think.

but theres so many other things it depends on, i cant give you anything solid to go on. tyrepressure and size is a b ig part too, i try and use a thin hard tyre on the rearr

gearing is simple maths.

44/16=2.75, now divide the amount of teeth(sprocket) into the amount of teeth in the freewheel, and find which is closest to 2.75

i'd personally avoid buying a colony frame, everyone i know whos had one has snapped it.

friemuths just ben dumped by them anyhow, so if you really want that frame itl'l be cheaper in a few weeks.

i also dont see any attraction to the ukbike company frame or whatever its called.

Trust an old racer to come up with the simple answer!

Thanks for the heads up...
