Dont use normal detergent, use the stuff to remove limescale from your dishwasher....

What about the metal parts of  the wheels, do they have to be stripped first when using the dishwasher method?

just take the bearings, freewheel and axle off, clean off any extra mingness and bang em in.

Rombloke:
ok, think that the rule of thumb here is if you want to dye white ones to a colour, you need to cook em in the dye, so a metal conainer and small camping type stove would be the answer.

also, yes, white one even if really shitty can be pulled back to life by soaking in lots of neat bleach.

and as for the light recolouring, yes it obviously works well, the pictures show that, this can also be done with most nylon items, (seats etc ). and the wd40 always works a treat but it will take an age for your brakes to work properly.
