just been doing a mock up build to see what the issues are with the chain

you can see here where the chain touches the frame

at the moment the chain only just touchs the frame im thinking of heating the part up and bending it out slightly so the chain runs free but not sure yet.

If there's room, would it help if you put the chainring on the inside of the spider?

thats a bit of a quandry isnt it, nice frame though.

controversial thought here but how about having the tube indented like they do with some chainstays behind the chainwheel to give clearance to the chain, as the chainwheel and freewheel look to be inline so moving the chainwheel inwards would only make the chain run at an angle and put undue pressure on it.

I was going to add that you should consider a smaller chainring, 36T or 38T and mount on the inside of the spider. Then try and get hold of a 13T or 14T rear freewheel or change your hubs for a Shimano cassette 14T

Might help you get round the heating and bending of the frame

ive almost cracked it chainwheel is on the back of the spider but ive had to use a 40 tooth chainwheel, but it has worked.
this bike will never be ridden so i guess the gearing isnt as important

im thinking white frame and forks semi custom decals (weve no idea what theyd have done but theve all similar)
gotta be tuffs or z rims nice laidback post and kashi aero.
im not sure what bars though so if anyone has a surgestion!

you could also add another washer, about 2mm to the hub on the drive side and remove one from the other side or grind down a cone nut about 2mm to balance it out.

loving the one of a kind-ness.

If it was mine ( and I now kinda wish it was

) I would strip and polish the frame to bare metal... laquer it to protect it... get some Landing Gear forks and Ladder bars in the same colour ( maybe white ) and custom white graphics based on the Ltd Ed ones from Steve to say 'Prototype Freestyler' rather than 'Firebird' and leave all the other parts of it the same...

... but its your bike mate so just enjoy whatever you do... I can't wait to see how it comes out

As its a prototype and its been red for many years it would be a shame to deviate from this colour, so maybe have it re done the same shade red as a tribute, that we will all recognise and remember

That's quirky and cool

As others have said definately try and get a washer or two on the hub axle inside of the dropout to lightly adjust prise the frame out ward .

I'd agree with Pete ,, a mid 80's colour like Lavender , orange etc seems the only way to go

Can you make up the decals with a mix of these two styles is this a transitiion frame before the the Freestyler came out?
